What a Party!

After the very successful village party to celebrate the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle we promised that we would provide more photos from that day and here they are!

We hope you agree that they successfully capture the flavour of the day that was enjoyed by so many. A big thank you to Ben Langdown who kindly volunteered to take photos of the party. Ben took a lot more photos but we are limited to space here so it is the intention that all the photos will go onto the Village website once the relevant approvals have been obtained. The issue before the Committee and the parents argument may well is whether the children of North Kilworth should go to the village school or to that at Husbands have been behind the Bosworth, two miles away. To some physically weak children the journey would become impossible. For all children it would be an additional burden, and take a large amount of time out of play hours, with the result that the children themselves would become dissatisfied and regard school as a drudgery.

The change is certain to create a great irregularity in attendance, which will interfere with the work of the North Kilworth children and those already at Husbands Bosworth School. The ostensible reason of the Education Committee for taking such action is a desire to save expense by a reduction of teachers.’ Are the good health and happiness of the North Kilworth children to be sacrificed to this petty economy?’ ask the parents. There is a limit to the application of economy after which it degenerates into parsimony, and defeats its own end. Is this to happen in North Kilworth? KEEPING YOU INFORMED Page 5

H2NO!

I’m sure we were all a little perplexed when water failed to come out of our taps last month. It’s just another of those things that we take for granted. A fleet of water bowsers were continually arriving and leaving from the temporary traffic lights on the sharp bend on the A5199, and this prompted me to get on my bike and do a little investigation. I’d heard from a Severn Trent chap in Wigston that there had been a leak and they were having to ‘top up’ the Knaptoft reservoir. Apparently it serves an ever-growing community around this area and struggles to keep up with demand. With this, and the increased demand due to our current warm spell, no wonder the flow became a trickle and then stopped all together! Once fixed, the engineers then had to deal with an air-block in the system. At one point I calculated that they were pumping in over 200,000ltrs of fresh water daily! Annoying as it was, and I had 2 house guests to keep happy, we should extend our thanks to the Severn Trent team who worked tirelessly around the clock to get our supply back on. Words and photos by David Helsby

David is very generous in his praise of Severn Trent. A less positive comment which has been fed back to Severn Trent is that they knew the drought would mean people were using more water and they should never have let the water in the Knaptoft reservoir run out. Their communications with the public were very poor. No warnings were given and no bottled water provided. What is your view? Page 6 NORTH KILWORTH NEWS

Everyone involved with the club, especially the children, would like to say a big thank you to our kit sponsors for last season Mike and Gill at F. Howkins garage. Your support was much appreciated and makes a big difference to the children and club. What is also exciting is 7 of the boys attend St Andrews and we are very much a village team.

In terms of the teams, the top photo is of North Kilworth Hawks and the bottom photo is North Kilworth Hawks of the North Kilworth Eagles. Both teams have represented the village in the Leicestershire and Rutland U9 league and have had very successful seasons.

The Hawks were promoted to division 2 and played some fantastic football winning 9 league games. The team also had a great run at the recent North Kilworth FC U9 tournament and narrowly missed out on going through to the final, losing our semi on a penalty shootout.

Unfortunately we could not replicate in the World North Kilworth Cup and will start practicing for next season! Eagles The Eagles also had an outstanding season winning 10 games in a row! The team should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved and how much they have improved over the last year. Next year , with their new coach, Ian Stirland, taking charge they are sure bets for promotion! Before signing off, it is important to highlight, whilst we have been successful in the last year. The boys play for fun, enjoy being with their friends and play in a very positive and supportive environment. Any local children going starting year 5 are welcome to come training with us on Saturday mornings at South Kilworth village hall. On 2nd July the team played at home to Husbands Bosworth sadly losing 18 to 5½, the ladies did their best against the pink T-shirt ladies but we are all still ‘hopelessly devoted’ (Grease the musical song) to the Kilworth Rounders Team ….. sorry, I just had to plug that one.

The 10th July saw us playing away to Arthingworth, again losing 17 to 6 ½ to a friendly team who supported us all the way and celebrated our achievements. Being new to Division One we definitely learnt some new things.

North Kilworth Women’s Institute Our July meeting was well attended and after the business of the meeting was concluded we settled back to hear our speaker. Sue Otter gave us a very interesting talk on her several walks along the Camino de Santiago. She and her companion had done different stages of this pilgrimage over a few years. Some pilgrims walk from many different countries to the shrine of Saint James in Northern Spain although legend has it that the saint’s body was brought there by a stone boat! Her account of her trip was extremely entertaining and she had us all fascinated by the stories of the people they met and the vagaries of the weather! She was thanked by Gaye We also had the chance to buy jams, jellies and marmalades made by Claire Williams with pro- ceeds going to the Church Building Fund. Meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the Village Hall and we would be very pleased to see any new members North Kilworth Reading Group The Reading Group do not meet in August but will be getting back together on Thursday 27th September.

The book to be discussed in September is ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ by Gail Honeymoon. As you can guess, Eleanor Oliphant is not at all fine though she keeps the reader very entertained. It is an intriguing novel which deals with loneliness and social isolation in modern Britain as it slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Eleanor. More information and venue to be provided in September issue.

By the time this newsletter appears we will have played the second match against South Kilworth Bowls Club and the destination of the Entwistle Cup will have been decided.

During July we also welcomed final year pupils from St. Andrew's School for a fun afternoon of bowling when they had to go through hoops, land in targets, pass through tunnels etc. The pupils, teachers and parents/grandparents who came along all enjoyed their afternoon in the sunshine and we hope to repeat this event next year.

August sees our President's Day event for our members who will be bowling for the Taffy Trophy. This is an all-day event which starts at 10:00 am and, depending on the number of bowlers taking part, will finish around 4pm. August also sees the last of our Thursday evening friendly matches. It doesn't seem possible that, in a few short weeks time, the evenings will be getting too dark to bowl beyond 8:00 - 8:30 pm. Our Saturday afternoon friendly games however continue through until the end of September. Why not come along and watch from the balcony with a drink from our bar in your hand. All the fixtures are on our website. Also why not come along on one of our club nights and try your hand. You will be made most welcome. Just contact one of the committee below.

By now you will have seen that the oak cladding to the rear of the village hall has been completed. I am sure you would agree that it has made a huge difference to the appearance to this important village asset. I would like to thank the Parish council for allowing the wind farm money to be used for this project.

Our very large sycamore tree also needs work after the last storm we had. Once permission has been granted we will be closing the car park for health and safety reasons on the days that the tree surgeon is working. Please inform your children not to play anywhere near that end of the green on those days.

Friday Night Footballers North Kilworth vs Swinford 29/6/18. The game between North Kilworth’s finest and the Swinford rabble kicked off promptly at 7.30pm. Kilworth were already hampered by a sports day related injury to Jonny and a restaurant related retirement of Vick. North Kilworth were ably skippered by Vince, but terribly mismanaged by Norman. An enormous throng of family and assorted well-wishers led the chanting from the side-lines. Swin- ford took the lead before Warwick scored with a text-book penalty kick. The heat began to take its toll and the referee (probably the man of the match) called for a mid-half drinks break. It could have been 2-1 to Swinford at this point, I really can’t remember, but changes were made to freshen up the Kilworth attack. Aiden’s repeated flagging for offside caused some excitement for the Swinford play- ers and the half ended at either 2 or 3 to 1, Swinford with the upper hand. The second half brought a markedly better display from the mighty Kilworth Friday night footballers. A multiplicity of goals was disallowed for off side much to our frustration. Swinford score again before Graham scored to bring the score back to 4:2 in Swinford’s favour. Kilworth then pressed hard for the remainder of the game but to no avail. A loss, painful to bear but hands were shaken and the trophy for the inaugural inter- village grudge match was handed over. All then retired to the sports club for a spread put on by Ter- ry. In total £250 was raised for the North Kilworth Juniors, probably the result of the night. A return fixture is in the offing. We generally play on a Thursday or Friday night, usually starting around 8.30pm, either at the tennis courts or on the grass under the lights at the sports club. All are welcome. If you’re interested please Vince on 07766 721177 We have a friendly kick around; we have no pretentions of greatness!
