  • Sammy Garcia
Sammy Garcia In the world of the tropical music, Sammy is counted as one of the very best amongst such legendary performers as: Conjunto Clásico, Willie Colón, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Nieves, Puerto Rican Power, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Víctor Manuell, Olga Tañón, Elvis Crespo y Ricardo Arjona, just to name a few. His professional experiences during his musical career, afforded him the opportunity to play in such great venues and events such as: Concerts in the Madison Square Garden, Aruba Jazz Festival, Feria de Calí, Festival de la Calle Ocho, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Carnaval de Panamá, Día Nacional de la Salsa y Congreso Mundial de la Salsa, among others. They serve as a strong center for his artistic foundation, entertaining diverse audiences around the world. His artistic path has been split between being a musician and a director and this immersion into the craft has led him to be an innovator in the world of modern salsa music. This innovative vision is truly realized in his latest project “El Sabor De Puerto Rico”, where under the direction of Sammy, never loses the “swing” and “cadence” of the traditional salsa music. Salsa’s unprecedented international popularity resulted from the confluence of several distinct social conditions and historical events: the Puerto Rican dilemma of colonial status, the civil rights and black pride movements in the U.S., the Cuban revolution’s promise of upliftment for the lower classes, urban migration, and the need for a Latino alter- native to the hegemony of Anglo rock. In this paper I will argue that salsa’s popularity needs to be understood in terms of a musical sound and a social style that responded effectively to these circumstances, captured beautifully in the film Our Latin Thing. I propose, furthermore, that the colonial dilemma of Puerto Ricans in the island and in New York motivated their creative contributions to salsa, which they experienced as a form expressive liberation and decolonization.

  • Entrevista a Puchi Esposa De Hector Lavoe

  • Live at Yankee Stadium”--The Fania All-Stars (1975) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Thomas Muriel (Guest Post)*
“Live at Yankee Stadium”--The Fania All-Stars (1975) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Thomas Muriel (guest post)* Original album The date Friday, August 23, 1973, is an historic one for Latin music. That night, Jerry Masucci, the ultimate gambler, was the last man laughing as his most bizarre gambit to date became a total success--his Fania All-Stars poured 40,000 screaming fans into Yankee Stadium for an unforgettable night of superb music. If Fania Records’ super-band was already famous at the time (thanks to the famed Cheetah club concert and the 1972 movie “Our Latin Thing”), this is the concert that made them a legend (the famous Cheetah club actually folded in 1974). That night, the All-Stars were scheduled to play two sets. The first set was a traditional one, with the All-Stars aided by guests Mongo Santamaría, Jan Hammer, Jorge Santana, and Billy Cobham, who quickly proved to the crowd that they could play soul as well as rock. The second set, another daring Masucci gambit, was never completed, as a bloody conga duel battle between Ray Barretto and Santamaría prompted the frenzied audience to bypass the security barriers to make their way into the playing field and onto the stage, triggering the concert’s abrupt ending. The orchestra had already gone through serious changes in personnel—now all the singers were either solo acts or bandleaders (or they were on the way to becoming both as part of the label’s expansion plans). But a bitter internal controversy involving three of their main stars provoked one of the most important changes to the band’s roster—this was the result of the harsh breakup of Barretto’s band, with five of his musicians leaving to form Típica ’73.

  • Fania Papo Luca Piano Man
Fania Papo Luca piano Man Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on April 2, 1946, Enrique ‘Papo’ Lucca began playing the piano with his father’s band at age 11. Initially, La Ponceña performed covers of tropical hits of the moment by bands such as Cortijo y su Combo and La Sonora Matancera. In the late ’60s, Papo became La Ponceña’s musical director, beginning a deep transformation that would eventually establish the group as one of the most progressive outfits in the history of Afro-Caribbean music. Papo’s arrangements were daring and adventurous, experimenting with elements of Brazilian music, mainstream jazz and rock. Representing the authentic spirit of Puerto Rican salsa, his piano solos are velvety and funky, marked by their restrained, supremely elegant sense of swing. By the mid-’70s, La Ponceña was enjoying unprecedented critical and commercial success. The band recorded for the Inca label, which eventually became part of the Fania empire. Papo was called to arrange and play on sessions by some of the label’s biggest artists, including Johnny Pacheco, Celia Cruz and Cheo Feliciano. He was also invited to record and tour with the Fania All Stars. This compilation pays tribute to the artistry of Papo Lucca through 14 seminal tracks recorded between 1967 and 1981. Although Lucca has worked both as a solo artist and with a multitude of salsa stars, it is his work with La Ponceña that best distills his remarkable vision. This music is all about making people happy and ignite in them the desire to dance, says Lucca from his home in Puerto Rico.
