The rebellions in those countries had much in common, but one of the most striking differences is the degree of violence inflicted by these popular movements on their opponents. Chinese popular rebels were much more likely to kill or injure others than their counterparts in Korea and Japan. Such differences seem to be closely associated with the question of whether the rebel forces fought due to conflicting interests within the polity, or were seeking to build a new kingdom by pursuing a newly-risen religion while rejecting the existing ruling system and ideology that legitimized it. This paper will examine how the rebel forces based the legitimacy of their actions in relation to each country’s “political culture.” While popular movements in the West or the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom were based on the idea that God was more powerful than the secular ruler, popular movements in Korea or Japan did not have a transcendent source of authority that was superior to the monarch. -

Manchus: A Horse of a Different Color by Hannah Knight Abstract: The question of identity has been one of the biggest questions addressed to humanity. Whether in terms of a country, a group or an individual, the exact definition is almost as difficult to answer as to what constitutes a group. The Manchus, an ethnic group in China, also faced this dilemma. It was an issue that lasted throughout their entire time as rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911) and thereafter. Though the guidelines and group characteristics changed throughout that period one aspect remained clear: they did not sinicize with the Chinese Culture. At the beginning of their rule, the Manchus implemented changes that would transform the appearance of China, bringing it closer to the identity that the world recognizes today. In the course of examining three time periods, 1644, 1911, and the 1930’s, this paper looks at the significant events of the period, the changing aspects, and the Manchus and the Qing Imperial Court’s relations with their greater Han Chinese subjects. -

Entrance Baekje Cultural Land, the Revival of Baekje Welcome to Baekje Cultural Land, a reconstruction of the ancient Kingdom of Baekje. Baekje dominated the south-western part of the Korean Peninsula from 18 B.C. to 600 A.D. In addition to Baekje, two other kingdoms concurrently occupied the peninsula. They were Goguryeo, which was based in the north of Korea and eastern China, and Silla, based in the south-east of the Korean Peninsula. These three kingdoms influenced each other’s development through a series of conflicts and alliances which unfolded over a 700-year period known as the Three Kingdoms Period. During the 4th century, Baekje’s territory extended towards China under the powerful authoritarian leadership of King Geunchogo. In the following century, the king adopted Buddhism as the national faith and cultivated an independent Buddhist culture. In fact, Baekje was described in various Chinese historical sources as a kingdom with numerous Buddhist temples and pagodas. This brilliant Buddhist culture contributed to the foundation of ancient Japanese culture. During a time when means of transportation weren’t as developed as they are today, Baekje was the conduit for Northeast Asian cultural exchange between China and Japan in terms of art, religion and academic studies. Here at Baekje Cultural Land, you will be introduced to the magnificent culture of Baekje. The palaces, temples, pagodas and tombs that you will see here were reconstructed following ten years of - 2 - intensive historical research. -

China's Belt and Road Initiative in the Global Trade, Investment and Finance Landscape │ 3 China’s Belt and Road Initiative in the global trade, investment and finance landscape China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) development strategy aims to build connectivity and co-operation across six main economic corridors encompassing China and: Mongolia and Russia; Eurasian countries; Central and West Asia; Pakistan; other countries of the Indian sub-continent; and Indochina. Asia needs USD 26 trillion in infrastructure investment to 2030 (Asian Development Bank, 2017), and China can certainly help to provide some of this. Its investments, by building infrastructure, have positive impacts on countries involved. Mutual benefit is a feature of the BRI which will also help to develop markets for China’s products in the long term and to alleviate industrial excess capacity in the short term. The BRI prioritises hardware (infrastructure) and funding first. This report explores and quantifies parts of the BRI strategy, the impact on other BRI-participating economies and some of the implications for OECD countries. It reproduces Chapter 2 from the 2018 edition of the OECD Business and Financial Outlook. 1. Introduction The world has a large infrastructure gap constraining trade, openness and future prosperity. Multilateral development banks (MDBs) are working hard to help close this gap. Most recently China has commenced a major global effort to bolster this trend, a plan known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). China and economies that have signed co-operation agreements with China on the BRI (henceforth BRI-participating economies1) have been rising as a share of the world economy. -

Since the 1980s under the auspices of Japanese government’s“ 100,000 International Students Plan” Joseonjok as a sub-group of Chinese migrants have moved to Japan to seek out better life chances. During the course of their settlement in Japan, their identity has become multilayered because of their Chinese nationality and Korean ethnicity as well as their Japanese cultural competencies. Furthermore, their identity has been shaped by their multilingual and transnational experiences. To implement this research, I have reviewed Joseonjok researches performed in China, Japan, and South Korea. I have used qualitative methods combining in-depth interviews and participant observation which have been performed in the Tokyo area since 2016. I have also performed on-line surveys through the media sites of Joseonjok communities. The main purpose of this research is to examine how multilingualism and transnationalism affect the construction of Joseonjok identity in Japan. Joseonjok’s trilingual ability and their transnational activities among the three countries have affected the formation of the distinctive identity as an ethnic minority in Japan. The multilingual and transnational identity of Joseonjok in Japan keeps evolving through the process of formation, construction, and negotiation. Resumen del TFG El reino de Goguryeo es considerado uno de los más poderosos e influyentes de la historia antigua de Corea. Este antiguo reino existió desde el 37 a. de C. al 668 d. de C, y llegó a comprender, durante su época de explendor, desde lo que hoy corresponde al sur de Manchuria, hasta las zona central de la península de Corea, contando también con territorios que actualmente forman la zona sur de Rusia. Hoy en día es considerado una parte importante de la historia de Corea, ya que forma la base de la identidad coreana. Además, el reino ha dejado un legado cultural extenso. Desde 2004, el Conjunto de tumbas de Goguryeo es considerado Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO. Sin embargo, su historia es polémica. En 2004 comenzó un conflicto entre los historiadores chinos y los historiadores coreanos. Ambos grupos reclaman la historia del antiguo reino como parte de la historia de su país. Debido a su importancia histórica, a través de este trabajo se pretende conocer la historia de este antiguo reino y analizar los conflictos derivados de su historia.
