Prologus Primus1 Venerandorum Virorum Prologus primus1 Venerandorum virorum vestigia non relinquens, duas personas, discipuli scilicet et magistri, finxi seu suscepi, inter quas sequens dialogus verteretur, in persona discipuli verbis utens quampluribus ex quibus posse colligi videretur quod idem discipulus de parte esset omnino michi contraria mecunque communionem habere penitus non auderet, tali modo quod ego sequentis operis essem auctor omnibus hominibus, duobus exceptis, putans et gestiens occultare. Nec tamen propter hoc inceptum procedendi modum et loquendi dimisi, sed continuavi et usque ad finem continuare pro- pono. Quamobrem nemo michi debet quamcunque opinionem qualitercunque hic discussam vel recitatam imponere, nisi quam a me alias vel in aliis operibus scriptam vel dictam assertive vel opinative cognoverit; nichil enim in persona mea sed aliorum hic dico. This prologue is found in only two witnesses, We and Fr; all other witnesses begin with the Prologue below. In the rubrics in We the two prologues are labelled respectively “Prologus primus” and “Prologus secundus”. In Fr the first prologue has no heading, the second is headed “Prologus”. In Fr the first prologue is written on the back of a folio in what seems to be different handwriting. Regarding the authenticity of the first prologue see *Miethke, *Knysh. 2 Prologus sed propter improbitatem tuam voluntati tue parere curabo. O’Malley p140f 1) ressourcement 2) adaptation 3) episcopal collegiality and 4) active participation (Ch.4 of What Happened at Vatican II) are correctly described by O’Malley as fundamental and traditional principles. In a harsh and pedantic review of What Happened at Vatican II the late Richard John Neuhaus, on one hand gives O’Malley back-handed compliments for his balanced analysis, and in the next sentence rushes in to castigate him with misleading accusations of presenting the ‘discontinuity’ perspective of the council. Neuhaus writes dismissively: “What Happened at Vatican II is a 372-page brief for the party of novelty and discontinuity. Its author comes very close to saying explicitly what is frequently implied: that the innovationists practiced subterfuge, and they got away with it” [10]. I was attracted by the vividness of his writing but puzzled that the female recipients of his correspondence tolerated such a vain, irascible and misogynistic mentor. I took my initial, tentative thesis to Dr Neil O’Sullivan, Discipline Chair of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia and Dr Michael Champion who listened patiently and encouraged me to persevere with a doctoral thesis. I am grateful to both men for their advice and suggestions in shaping this work. Dr O’Sullivan’s command of the classics pointed me in new and interesting directions. Curriculum vitae Bishop-elect Erio Castellucci was born in Forlì on 8 July 1960. He completed his institutional studies for the priesthood at the Pontifical Regional Seminary Flaminio Benedetto XV in Bologna, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in theology (1983). Then as a student at the Pontifical Lombard Seminary of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo in Urbe in Rome he was awarded a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1988). He was ordained a priest on 5 May 1984 for the diocese of Forlì-Bertinoro. From 1984 to 1986 he served as pastoral collaborator at the parish of San Gregorio Magno alla Magliana, Rome; and from 1984 to 1992 parish priest at San Tommaso Apostolo in Durazzanino.
