Dissertação (Mestrado) – Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, 2015. A presença africana bantu no Brasil fundou sistemas culturais e religiosos específicos, notadamente o Candomblé de Nação Angola. Nele há uma concepção sobre o tempo como força espiritual (Nkisi), para a qual existe um culto estruturado. Este trabalho objetivou descrever a compreensão e a vivência do tempo no Candomblé de Nação Angola, de acordo com a etnopsicologia, segundo a qual as sociedades têm cosmovisões particulares. Para tanto, foram utilizadas técnicas etnográficas tais como diário de campo e entrevistas, aliadas à proposta psicanalítica da escuta participante, que compreende o sujeito da pesquisa, neste caso, o Tempo, como produtor de sentido em relação ao seu contexto cultural. Os colaboradores da pesquisa e os Terreiros de Candomblé onde foi realizada a pesquisa de campo, pertencem à linhagem Tumbensi. Ao todo, foram entrevistados oito integrantes, dentre eles lideranças religiosas como Jeurema Passos (Terreiro Tumbensi matricial), Iraildes Maria da Cunha (Terreiro Tumba Junsara), Valdina Pinto de Oliveira (Terreiro Tanuri Junsara), Zulmira de Santana França, Clidelcina Conceição e Tiganá Santana (Terreiro Tumbensi - Lauro de Freitas), Cleusa Moreira Santos (Terreiro Jinguê Junsara), Itana Maria Ribeiro das Neves (Terreiro Viva Deus). Os resultados encontrados mostram que o tempo é compreendido como continuidade de uma raiz ancestral, assim como confirmam sua presença e interferência nos enredos familiares, atuando, deste modo, como gente. O tempo se apresenta por meio de uma mutabilidade, estabelece relações com outros tempos (ocidental e indígena), assim como é vento, movimento, e ainda uma força espiritual, e faz-se presente também enquanto expressão musical. Infere-se que o Tempo abordado na pesquisa é fruto e origem de transfomações culturais e sociais, bem como se afirma como um tempo afrobrasileiro. Palavras-Chave: Candomblé de Nação Angola. The Bantu African presence in Brazil has created specific cultural and religious systems highlighting the Candomblé of Angolan Nation. In this Candomblé there`s a conception of time as a spiritual force (Nkisi) to which there`s also a structured worship. The research aimed to describe the comprehension and living of time within the Candomblé of Angolan Nation, accordingly to ethnopsychology that asserts the societies own their particular worldviews. One used ethnographic techniques – like field diary and interviews – associated to the psychoanalytic proposal called participant listening which comprises the individual of the research – the Time in that case – as a producer of meaning related to his cultural context. The collaborators of the research and the Terreiros of Candomblé – where the field research was fulfilled – belong to the Tumbensi lineage. Eight members were interviewed and among them there were religious leaders like Jeurema Passos (matrix Terreiro Tumbensi), Iraildes Maria da Cunha (Terreiro Tumba Junsara), Valdina Pinto de Oliveira ( Terreiro Tanuri Junsara), Zulmira de Santana França, Clidelcina Conceição and Tiganá Santana (Terreiro Tumbensi - Lauro de Freitas), Cleusa Moreira Santos (Terreiro Jinguê Junsara), Itana Maria Ribeiro das Neves (Terreiro Viva Deus). The results show that the time is comprised as the continuity of an ancestral root and confirm the presence and interference of the time in the familiar tales as if it was a person. The time is expressed through the mutability, it establishes relationship with other sorts of time (western and indigenous), it‟s the wind, it‟s the motion and a spiritual force, it‟s a musical expression as well. One infers the time in the research is the result and the origin of the cultural and social transformations and it affirms itself as an Afro-Brazilian time. B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.

    Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies (SERSAS) Fall Meeting 27 - 28 October 2000 University of Tennessee, Knoxville West-Central African Nature Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry Ras Michael Brown Dillard University Captives carried from West-Central African ports to the shores of South Carolina arrived in large numbers throughout the duration of the legal and illegal African slave trade, particularly during the years when plantation slavery began to take its familiar form and expand throughout Carolina. These enslaved West-Central Africans played an especially important role in shaping the cultural milieu of the southeastern seaboard. A number of scholars have looked at the influence of West-Central Africans on beliefs and practices in the African- Lowcountry cultural tradition.[1] This paper is part of my contribution to this topic. In particular, I examine the example of nature spirits in South Carolina as reflective of the profound and unique impact that West-Central Africans had on the development of African- Lowcountry culture. I contend that West-Central African nature deities, called simbi spirits in Kikongo, served the enslaved people of the early Lowcountry as spiritual benefactors around which captives of diverse African origins and those born in the Lowcountry built their communities. Simbi Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry: Evidence & Questions In 1843, a geologist in search of marl deposits in the soil of South Carolina recorded in his journal that enslaved people throughout the Lowcountry that water spirits called "cymbees" inhabited certain springs. This early account and later ones from twentieth-century sources also report that African-descended people in the Lowcountry feared the "cymbees," especially in instances when individuals (usually women) tried to draw water or children endeavored to swim in the springs.

    RBSE 8(24): 524-621, Dez2009 ISSN 1676-8965 ARTIGO A Symbolic Analysis of Ritualistic Crime: The Forensics of Sacrifice 1 Dawn Perlmutter Resumo: O assassinato ritual inclui uma grande variedade de atos sagrados e temporais cometidos por grupos e por indivíduos e é atribuído o mais frequentemente aos praticantes de ideologias ocultas tais como o Satanismo, o Palo Mayombe, a Santeria e outras tradições mágicas, ou aos assassinos em série e aos sadistas sexuais que assassinam ritualmente as suas vítimas. Devido a muitas controvérsias legais, práticas e éticas o estudo da violência religiosa contemporânea está em sua infância. Não houve nenhum estudo empírico sério dos crimes ou das classificações ritualísticas que distingam adequadamente entre os homicídios rituais cometidos para sagrado versus motivações temporais. Este artigo é o resultado de minha pesquisa na fenomenologia da adoração da imagem, de rituais contemporâneos do sangue, e da violência sagrada. Reflete meu esforço contínuo para proteger as liberdades religiosas de membros de religiões alternativas ao ajudar profissionais da lei de lei na investigação de crimes ritualísticos. Abstract : Ritual murder includes a wide variety of both sacred and secular acts committed by groups and individuals and is most often attributed to practitioners of occult ideologies such as Satanism, Palo Mayombe, Santeria, and other magical traditions, or to serial killers and sexual sadists who ritually murder their victims. Due to many legal, practical, and ethical controversies the study of contemporary religious violence is in its infancy. There have been no serious empirical studies of ritualistic crimes or classifications that adequately distinguish between ritual homicides committed for sacred versus secular motivations.

Dogs in the spiritual world of the Kongo People by James E Johannes The Kongo people’s spiritual world includes their dogs. To understand how the dogs are incorporated into this world the Kongo people’s beliefs and practices will be described. Map showing the area where the Kongo people live The Kongo people see the cosmos divided into “this world” (nza yahi) and “the land of the dead” (nsi a bafwa). The land of the dead can be underground, in the forest, in the cemetery, or across a body of water (i.e. river, Atlantic, or underwater) which is both a passage and barrier between the land of the living and of the dead. White is the color of the dead and the name of their abode is called Mpemba, which is also the word used for chalk or white Kaolin clay. When it is day in the land of the living, it is night in the land of the dead. To the dead, 6 AM is nightfall and the early morning mist is their cooking fires. The forest is the village of the dead and wild animals are their livestock. Cemeteries are usually located in the forest. In the village of the dead the same activities and social forms occur as in the living village. The living say the dead are in the forest and that they live in a village, but the dead say the living live in the forest and that they live in the village.

Fennell1 This article applies theories of group dynamics and individual agency to past ma- terial expressions of core symbols within particular African American religious beliefs. The past creation and use of such artifacts is analyzed using theories con- cerning modes of symbolic expression, the interplay of dominant and nondominant religions, formation and maintenance of social group identities, and the role of individual creativity and innovation within those processes. This analysis demon- strates the ways in which facets of the core symbolic expressions of the BaKongo people of West Central Africa evolved over time and across the trans-Atlantic region. KEY WORDS: symbolic analysis; BaKongo diaspora; group identities; stylistic innovation. INTRODUCTION Archaeologists have recovered a variety of objects which appear to have been used for religious purposes by African American occupants of sites dating to the late seventeenth through nineteenth centuries in North America. Examples include pottery bowls with crosses incised on their bases, and white clay marbles, coins, and pewter spoons with “X” marks scratched into them. In addition, archaeologists have uncovered caches of quartz crystals, polished stones, pieces of chalk, ash, iron nails, blade-like fragments, bird skulls, crab claws, coins, and bone disks that were secreted along perpendicular axes under the brick and wood floors of dwellings (see, e.g., Brown, 1994; Ferguson, 1992, 1999; Franklin, 1997; Galke, 2000; Leone and Fry, 1999; McKee, 1995; Patten, 1992; Samford, 1996; Wilkie, 1995, 1997; Young, 1996, 1997).
