B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE OLIVIA GRANGE, CD, MP MINISTER OF CULTURE, GENDER, ENTERTAINMENT & SPORT ON THE MATTER OF EFFORTS TO CLEAR THE CRIMINAL RECORDS OF NATIONAL HEROES AND OTHER FREEDOM FIGHTERS HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2016 Mr. Speaker, The legacy that we honour and celebrate during Heritage week is a direct result of the selfless acts of our country’s six named National Heroes. During this week every year we acknowledge as a nation that the tenacity, resilience and fearlessness of these freedom fighters laid the foundation for the social, economic and political advancement of Jamaica. It is only fitting therefore that I rise in this Honourable House today to advise you Mr. Speaker, the Members of the House and the entire Jamaica of the intention of this administration to take immediate steps to enact legislation which would once and for all set the record straight and ensure that justice is served for at least some of those who stood up for cleared the pathway to our modern democracy. Mr Speaker the Cabinet has approved drafting instructions in respect of legislation which will cause the expungement of the criminal records of notable freedom fighters, national heroes, supporters, sympathizers and participants by association who were involved in the 1760 Chief Tacky’s St. Mary rebellion, the 1831/32 Christmas rebellion, the 1865 Morant Bay rebellion and the 1929 campaign of the People’s Political Party. 1 | P a g e Our National Heroes Paul Bogle, Samuel Sharpe and Marcus Garvey, as well as, our ancestral hero Tacky, will be those directly affected by this legislation when it comes into being. -

Foreword erna brodber One afternoon when I was six and in standard 2, sitting quietly while the teacher, Mr. Grant, wrote our assignment on the blackboard, I heard a girl scream as if she were frightened. Mr. Grant must have heard it, too, for he turned as if to see whether that frightened scream had come from one of us, his charges. My classmates looked at me. Which wasn’t strange: I had a reputation for knowing the answer. They must have thought I would know about the scream. As it happened, all I could think about was how strange, just at the time when I needed it, the girl had screamed. I had been swimming through the clouds, unwillingly connected to a small party of adults who were purposefully going somewhere, a destination I sud- denly sensed meant danger for me. Naturally I didn’t want to go any further with them, but I didn’t know how to communicate this to adults and ones intent on doing me harm. -

wbhr 02|2012 John Eyre, the Morant Bay Rebellion in 1865, and the Racialisation of Western Political Thinking IVO BUDIL The main purpose of this study is to analyze the process of so-called ra- cialisation of the Western thinking in a concrete historical context of Brit- ish colonial experience in the second half of the nineteenth century. For most authors, the concept of racialisation was related to the Europeans´ response to their encounter with overseas populations in the course of global Western expansion from the early modern age. Frantz Fanon de- scribed the phenomenon of racialisation as a process by which the Euro- pean colonists created the “negro” as a category of degraded humanity: a weak and utterly irrational barbarism, incapable of self-government.1 However, I am convinced that the post-colonial studies established by Eric Williams and his followers emphasizing the role of racism as a strategy of vindication and reproduction of Western hegemony over overseas socie- ties and civilizations tend to neglect or disregard the emergence and the whole intellectual development of the racial vision of the human history and society with various functions, impacts and role within the Western civilization itself. Ivan Hannaford stressed that the idea of ancient Greeks to see peo- ple not in terms of their origin, blood relations, or somatic features, but in terms of membership of a public arena presented a crucial political achievement and breakthrough in human history.2 It created the concept of free political space we live in since -

African Diaspora 9 (2016) 39–60 brill.com/afdi African Power West African Mediums Catering to Surinamese Clients in the Netherlands Amber Gemmeke* University of Bayreuth, Germany [email protected] Abstract This paper explores how West African migrants’ movements impacts their religious imagery and that of those they encounter in the diaspora. It specifically addresses how, through the circulation of objects, rituals, and themselves, West Africans and Black Dutchmen of Surinamese descent link, in a Dutch urban setting, spiritual empower- ing and protection to the African soil. West African ‘mediums’ offer services such as divination and amulet making since about twenty years in the Netherlands. Dutch- Surinamese clients form a large part of their clientele, soliciting a connection to Afri- can, ancestral spiritual power, a power which West African mediums enforce through the use of herbs imported from West Africa and by rituals, such as animal sacrifices and libations, arranged for in West Africa. This paper explores how West Africans and Dutchmen of Surinamese descent, through a remarkable mix of repertoires alluding to notions of Africa, Sufi Islam, Winti, and Western divination, creatively reinvent a shared understanding of ‘African power’. West-Central African Nature Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry
Southeastern Regional Seminar in African Studies (SERSAS) Fall Meeting 27 - 28 October 2000 University of Tennessee, Knoxville West-Central African Nature Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry Ras Michael Brown Dillard University Captives carried from West-Central African ports to the shores of South Carolina arrived in large numbers throughout the duration of the legal and illegal African slave trade, particularly during the years when plantation slavery began to take its familiar form and expand throughout Carolina. These enslaved West-Central Africans played an especially important role in shaping the cultural milieu of the southeastern seaboard. A number of scholars have looked at the influence of West-Central Africans on beliefs and practices in the African- Lowcountry cultural tradition.[1] This paper is part of my contribution to this topic. In particular, I examine the example of nature spirits in South Carolina as reflective of the profound and unique impact that West-Central Africans had on the development of African- Lowcountry culture. I contend that West-Central African nature deities, called simbi spirits in Kikongo, served the enslaved people of the early Lowcountry as spiritual benefactors around which captives of diverse African origins and those born in the Lowcountry built their communities. Simbi Spirits in the South Carolina Lowcountry: Evidence & Questions In 1843, a geologist in search of marl deposits in the soil of South Carolina recorded in his journal that enslaved people throughout the Lowcountry that water spirits called "cymbees" inhabited certain springs. This early account and later ones from twentieth-century sources also report that African-descended people in the Lowcountry feared the "cymbees," especially in instances when individuals (usually women) tried to draw water or children endeavored to swim in the springs.
