INFO TERRASSE Spring / Summer 2015 INFO TERRASSE Spring / Summer 2015 www.terrasse-vaudreuil.ca Info Terrasse www.terrasse-vaudreuil.ca A Word from the Mayor Dear Citizens, In early 2015, the Municipality of Terrasse-Vaudreuil has seen the culmination of a major project. Our new fire station complies with provincial safety standards requirements and prerequisites of the “Schéma de couverture de risques en sécurité Incendie” while providing safe and adequate facilities in the Table of event of local or regional mutual aid interventions. It also offers space for training, logistics, community events etc. Built in the heart of the municipality, Contents the fire station has a floor space of 600 square meters. The second floor offers a large training center that could also be used as a command post in case of MUNICIPAL COUNCIL 3 emergency measures. The building is equipped with a generator powerful enough to ensure the proper functioning of the equipment 24 hours a day. PHONE DIRECTORY 4 ADMINISTRATION 5 Still determined to improve the beauty and charm of the municipality, we now turn to another big project: the renovation and expansion of the Community Center. COMMUNITY 5 PUBLIC SAFETY 6-7 Built in the 1960s thanks to the volunteer work of many citizens in our municipality, the Community ENVIRONMENT 8 Center now requires major renovations. Used by various organizations and for town council meetings, it could also become a shelter in the event of emergency measures. The renovation project is to expand the PUBLIC WORKS 9 building and will mainly affect the kitchen and bathrooms that will be wheelchair accessible and PERMITS 10-11 equipped with baby changing tables. URBAN PLANNING 11 It goes without saying, this work is necessary and will delight everyone who uses our Community Center RECREATION - CULTURE 11-14 such as the Repas Partagés (senior luncheon), Soccer Amical de Terrasse-Vaudreuil, AHMIP Ile-Perrot DAY CAMP 13 Minor Hockey League, badminton matches, Zumba and Line dancing classes, Saturday group of games for children of ages 0 to 5 etc. We should also mention that in addition to these events, the Community SPONSORS 15-16 Center is also leased as a gym by the José-Maria grade school. To carry out this new project, the Municipality applied for the Federal “Initiative d’investissement local de Développement économique Canada pour les régions du Québec” program. The answer was favorable and we can now count on a grant of $ 100,000 to do the work. In recent years, the Diocese of Valleyfield informed the Municipality of its plans to close our church and to transfer everything to the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette church in Pincourt. The Council is currently considering the possibility of acquiring the Notre-Dame-de-Protection church with several interesting factors in mind. We will keep you informed of the outcome. On behalf of your elected officials, I wish you a very beautiful spring and summer of 2015, especially to children of ages 5 to 12 to whom we offer this year a new concept of day camp. The revenues raised are used to pay for a variety of public services including police, schools, fire protection, roads, and sewers. Owners of different classes of property, including residential, commercial and industrial, pay taxes. In principle, both considerations of efficiency and fairness suggest that the taxes paid by individual property owners should reflect the costs that they impose on municipal service providers. This is commonly referred to as the “user pay” principle. Therefore, to the extent that property tax rates differ across property classes, the differences should reflect commensurate differences in the relative costs that those asset classes impose on municipalities. This study compares property tax ratios for major residential and non-residential property classes in five of Canada’s largest metropolitan areas: Ontario’s Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, Quebec’s Greater Montreal, British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, and Alberta’s Calgary and Edmonton regions.

Private Property Pesticide By-laws In Canada Population Statistics by Municipality The lack of adequate protection from unwanted exposure to lawn pesticides at the federal and provincial level has fueled a growing surge in municipal pesticide restrictions designed to enhance the protection of the environment and public health. The number of municipal by-laws currently in place across Canada has now increased to 117. An additional 10 pesticide by-laws are at the draft stage pending adoption.
