Black Linguistics: Language, Society, and Politics in Africa and The Black Linguistics “This collection is one more step on the road toward the decolonization of Black languages and Black thought.” ~ ~ Ngug1 wa Thiong’ o, University of California, Irvine, USA Enslavement, forced migration, wars, and colonization have led to the global dispersal of Black communities and to the fragmentation of common experi- ences. These sociohistorical forces have impacted on language research and issues in Black communities throughout the world. This groundbreaking collection reorders the elitist and colonial elements of language studies by drawing together the multiple perspectives of Black language researchers. In so doing, the book recognizes and formalizes the existence of “Black Linguistics” and highlights the contributions of Black language research- ers in Africa and the Americas. This was also a call for Black scholars to take on the duty and the challenge of researching and expanding the possibilities inherent in African languages and the varieties of Black languages they have generated around the globe over the years. Bringing into one volume studies of Black languages by Black speakers, this book is very much in tune with that call, especially in the aim of celebrating and creating space for knowledge about Black languages. Some of these languages bear a variety of names— Ebonics, African American Language, Patwa, Creole, Kreyol, Haitian, Nation Languages—but they clearly have roots in the syntax and rhythm of speech of Continental African languages. Remarkably, these languages have developed despite all the odds set against them by the historical experience of the plantation, the colony, and the neo- colony. This in itself is a great act of resistance and creative survival. Languages meant to die have simply refused to die. Languages pushed to the periphery have refused to stay on the periphery. But their survival has not been without the trauma of the great divide between the majority of Black people who speak and use the languages to express their everyday needs and conception of the universe, and the Black educated elite who distance themselves from these lan- guages, often taking this distance, consciously or unconsciously, as a measure of their advancement in the modern world. Research by illustrious sons and daughters of the speakers of these languages ends up encased in languages fur- thest removed from Black languages. The result has been a weakening of the development of Black languages as adequate vehicles for knowledge in the arts, the sciences, and technology. In my book, Decolonizing the Mind, I have described this phenomenon as one of creating societies and nations of bodiless heads and headless bodies, and this is what all structures of domination hope to generate among the dominated. It is not that Black languages are incapable of expressing the modern universe xi FOREWORD but there have to be workers in ideas who are expanding the possibilities of those languages in that and other directions. The present collection, with its wide-ranging issues from ideology to the practice and politics of language, is an important contribution toward narrowing the divide. Between them, the con- tributors have already published many papers and books on different aspects of Black speech, and they thus bring to this volume knowledge gained from years of research and reflections from a variety of regional, cultural, and individual vantages. They, to use Smitherman’s titles of her other books, are Talkin’ That Talk to evaluate the status and scholarship of Black Talk. The volume should interest both the scholar and the general reader in what Black languages have to offer to the world. A most significant aspect of this book for the future is the very fact that, in editing and contribution, it is collaborative by Continental and Diasporic Africans. All varieties of Black languages face similar problems and challenges, not the least being that of moving them from the margins of power to claim their space among the other languages of the earth. Collaboration between Black scholars on either side of the Atlantic and beyond is important. The edi- tors readily acknowledge that all the contributions are in English for that is the linguistic means the scholars have in common. This position presents another challenge: the use of Black languages by Black scholars to theorize on Black lan- guages. It also challenges all Black scholars to learn and encourage the learning of at least one Continental African language in addition to what they already have. Translation among Black languages and between Black languages as a whole and other languages will itself become a means of enabling dialogue and conversation among languages.     1 Dialects, Standards, and Vernaculars Most of us have had the experience of sitting in a public place and eavesdropping on conversations taking place around the United States. We pretend to be preoccupied, but we can’t seem to help listening. And we form impressions of speakers based not only on the topic of conversation, but on how people are discussing it. In fact, there’s a good chance that the most critical part of our impression comes from how people talk rather than what they are talking about. We judge people’s regional background, social stat us, ethnicity, and a host of other social and personal traits based simply on the kind of language they are using. We may have similar kinds of reactions in telephone conversations, as we try to associate a set of characteristics with an unidentified speaker in order to make claims such as, “It sounds like a salesperson of some type” or “It sounds like the auto mechanic.” In fact, it is surprising how little conversation it takes to draw conclusions about a speaker’s background – a sentence, a phrase, or even a word is often enough to trigger a regional, social, or ethnic classification. Video: What an accent does Assessments of a complex set of social characteristics and personality traits based on language differences are as inevitable as the kinds of judgments we make when we find out where people live, what their occupations are, where they went to school, and who their friends are. The study maintains that the descriptive analysis of deverbal nominals in African languages does not fully interrogate the predicate argument structures of the verbs that host these deverbal nominals. This thesis is an investigation of how the syntactic properties of verbs from which deverbal nouns are derived are invoked in explaining the argument structure and event structure properties of deverbal nouns, particularly in Xhosa. The analysis presented here is situated in terms of a lexical semantic representation drawing on Pustejovsky (1996) and Busa (1996), which aims to capture linguistically relevant components of meaning. Chapter 1 presents the purpose and aims of the study, and states the theoretical paradigm on which this study is couched, namely Pustejovsky’s (1996) generative lexicon theory as well as the methodology for conducting the research.

Oxford: Oxford University Press.] The use of the augment in Nguni languages with special reference to the referentiality of the noun Eva-Marie Bloom Ström & Matti Miestamo Abstract This chapter examines the use of the augment, a prefix preceding the noun class prefix, in a number of language varieties in the Nguni subgroup of Bantu languages. The study of these closely related varieties, which show striking similarities as well as differences in the use of the augment, gives new insights into developmental tendencies of the augment. All contexts in which the augment can be omitted are non-fact contexts. Contrary to what has previously been argued for some varieties, however, we find that the presence vs. absence of the augment does not mark a referentiality distinction. It is argued that referentiality constitutes a semantic and pragmatic explanation to the absence and presence of the augment in different contexts in a diachronic perspective, but that this function is eroded in present-day Nguni. What remains is a limited referentiality distinction for some speakers in some varieties. The loss of function explains why the augment is included in the noun in nearly all contexts in some varieties, and omitted everywhere in others. Due to its loss of function, the augment has become free to participate in sociolinguistic and stylistic variation in some Bantu languages. I offer linguistic profi les as one way to join theoretical insight to empirical research. Linguistic profi les are a more narrowly targeted type of behavioral profi ling, focusing on a specifi c factor and how it is distributed across language forms. I present case studies using Russian data and illustrating three types of linguistic profi ling analyses: grammatical profi les, semantic profi les, and constructional profi les. In connection with each case study I identify theoretical issues and show how they can be operationalized by means of profi les. The fi ndings represent real gains in our understanding of Russian grammar that can also be utilized in both pedagogical and computational applications. 1. Th e quantitative turn in linguistics and the theoretical challenge I recently conducted a study of articles published since the inauguration of the journal Cognitive Linguistics in 1990. At the year 2008, Cognitive Linguistics took a quanti- tative turn; since that point over 50% of the scholarly articles that journal publishes have involved quantitative analysis of linguistic data [Janda 2013: 4–6]. Though my sample was limited to only one journal, this trend is endemic in linguistics, and it is motivated by a confl uence of historic factors.

    THE BIBLE COLLECTION 1 . 2 . THE BIBLE COLLECTION Large collection of missionary publications in ca. 100 languages. West Africa, India, etc., 1681–1991. Significant collection of 333 bibles, expositions, scriptural lessons, biblical school primers, and other extremely rare products of missionary presses. Many items unre- corded in Darlow & Moule, and several important 19th century works unrecorded in the OCLC database of worldwide libraries. The collection’s main strengths lie in 19th and early 20th century publications produced for/in Africa and India (some 89 Indian and 58 African works) as well as hundreds of 20th century works in almost 80 further languages, ranging from Rarotongan to Miskito. Generally in original or pe- riod bindings and often with ownership markings of missionary societies, the collec- tion paints a fascinating picture of missionary efforts of the 19th and 20th centuries. Highlights include an extremely rare edition of the New Testament printed in Tranquebar, South India in the Tamil language in 1758 by a Danish missionary, Bar- tholomaeus Ziegenbalg (this very copy fetching nearly $4000 at Sotheby’s in 2000), and a wonderful colour-illustrated edition of Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress translated into the Niger-Congo (Dualla) language in 1885. More than simply offshoots of the colonial enterprise, missionary movements set up their own presses in colonies such as Cameroon and Calcutta and began printing ti- tles such as the present ones, usually in runs of 1000 copies or less. These publications often represent the first appearance of native languages in print form, shaping future efforts at graphic and textual representation of mainly spoken languages.
