    Houck 1 Alex Houck Undergraduate Seminar Dr. Hindmarch-Watson May 15, 2018 The Failure to Unite Resistance to the Nazi Regime existed in all branches of German society both before and during World War II. The most prominent group of resisters consisted of members of the German elite and military. In 1944, the group was responsible for the failed assassination attempt and coup d'etat against Hitler, but the group had been in existence before the war even began. Many attempts were made by people in the Resistance to gain crucial support from the West, but in spite of sharing a common enemy in the Nazis, all of the attempts met with failure. In 1938, the group wanted to launch a coup d'etat to prevent Hitler from invading Czechoslovakia and starting what they believed would be a war with Britain and France.1 The Resistance hoped that the British would take a firm stance against Hitler. This contact was the first in a series of attempts by the German Resistance to gain external support from the Allies prior to and during the war. All of the attempts met with failure for a variety of reasons. Scholars have focused predominantly on the communication between between the conservative German group and the British during the war. Not as much work has been done to analyze the relationship between the German Resistance and the United States. Opvallend voor een kijker van nu is hoeveel er gerookt wordt in deze oostfrontsequentie en in de hele film. Je ziet de hoofdofficieren wel een voor een hun sigaret doven onder hun g limme nd gepoetste laarzen, voor de Führer uit het vliegtuig stapt. Hitler hield effectief niet van roken en duldde geen rokers in zijn aanwezigheid. Non-fictie en fictie, zowel in schrift als in film hebben als gemeenschappelijk punt dat ze niet de geschiedenis zijn , maar een presentatie of liever: representatie van de geschiedenis. Het verschil tussen fictie en non-fictie? Hier hebben we nu twee films kort na elkaar, over hetzelfde onderwerp: het als historisch document bedoelde S tauffenberg. The defeated nations were enslaved and exploited, rather than won over through wise consideration for their national pride, their will for freedom, and their vital interests, thus building bridges to perma- nent understanding. In this way, the govern- ment disregarded the clear lessons of history, which condemn such an approach to failure, and everywhere sowed hate instead of trust. Without restraint, it blocked the way to a per- manent peace in the near future. We do not wish for other nations to be enslaved. The freedom for which our fathers wrestled for Germany in the last century as a precious asset of national life and which we must protect with the same enthusiasm must also be granted to all other nations. For only on this basis can the gulf be bridged that was torn open by unrestrained policies intoxicated on power. Another factor threatens to rob you of the success of your victories, which you have fought and won under the leadership of trained and experienced men: Hitler’s “com- mander’s genius,” which he arrogated to himself in crazed delusion and which idolizing sycophants imputed to him in the most revolt- ing manner. If a man wants to sole a shoe, he has to have learned the trade. If a man wants to lead an army of millions, he has to have learned and proven the ability to do so on the various rungs of tough military service.

Reviewed by Bradley Nichols (University of Tennessee-Knoxville)Published on H-German (February, 2011) Commissioned by Benita Blessing Outstanding Officers, SS Fanatics, and Nazi Generals This study by the prolific Samuel W. Mitcham Jr. examines the western front of the Second World War in 1944-45 from the perspective of German military officers. In a combination of operational military history and extended prosopography, Mitcham presents a compelling narrative of the dramatic clash between Allied and Axis forces in France, from the Normandy landings to the surrender of the last pockets of German resistance in fortress towns on the French coast. However, the work also suffers from methodological problems and a misleading portrayal of the Wehrmacht that will grate on scholars of the Third Reich as well as proponents of war and society studies--though probably not a mass readership of military history buffs. The book's subtitle itself is deceptive. After all, the campaign in France is one of the most heavily covered topics within the historiography on World War Two. Nevertheless, among studies of the western front, there is certainly no book like Defenders of Fortress Europe. Mitcham's use of some two hundred previously undisclosed personnel files--a bequest of the late Theodor-Friedrich von Stauffenberg--conveys the social and political complexity of the German officer class in a unique and innovative manner.
