RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED DEATH Professor Valerie J. Vollmar Willamette University College of Law Copyright 2007 *NOTE: The title of this report uses the term “physician-assisted death” instead of “physician-assisted suicide” for the first time. The reasons for this change are described below under “National Developments.” The report continues to use the term “physician-assisted suicide” when that term appears in the original source. The address and title of this website remain unchanged for ease in accessing the site. LEGISLATION Arizona Physician-assisted suicide and advance directive to control suffering. In January 2007, Representative Linda Lopez and eight other Democrats introduced HB 2572, which is similar to the Oregon Death with Dignity Act. On the same date, they also introduced HB 2357, which would amend Arizona’s advance directive statutes so that a person could indicate a desire to control suffering in the event of terminal illness by obtaining a prescription for lethal medication; the advance directive would have to be executed at least three months before the person requests a prescription. As was the case with comparable legislation introduced in 2005 and 2006, the bills have not advanced in the legislature. Million Geezer March. On 1/24/07, Representative Lopez joined other supporters of the proposed legislation in demonstrating outside the state capitol in Phoenix. California Bill introduced. On 2/15/07, Assemblywoman Patty Berg, Assemblymen Lloyd Levine, and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez introduced AB 374 (the California Compassionate Choices Act) in the California legislature. Twenty-four other members of the legislature co-authored the bill, which was patterned after the Oregon Death with Dignity Act but requires a mental health evaluation by a psychiatrist or psychologist if the patient is not in hospice care. -

Carcinogenic agents are exten- sively spread throughout the environment, inclusive of all the elements in which we live. Therefore all agents, of any type, which come in contact with the human body, are defined environmental agents. They include carcinogens in the air, in the water and in food. In addition there are all those agents which form part of our daily behaviour, cigarette smoke, cosmetics of any type, pharmaceutical drugs, children’s toys coated with substances which may contain chemical car- cinogens, pesticides, asbestos, benzene in gasoline and in addition radia- tion of different kinds, such as ionizing radiation from the earth, from cosmic rays, and from radon gas present in our homes. There are viruses in the environment, such as HPV for cancer of the uterus, bacteria, heli- cobacter pylorus for gastric cancer and parasites such as schistosoma haematobium for cancer of the bladder. All those agents, although innumerable and varied, have a common mechanism to induce cancer. They damage the DNA of a somatic cell cre- ating a lesion, which we call a ‘mutation’, of one or more genes. This lies at the root of the carcinogenic process, as the specific gene mutation gives the cell the ability to proliferate without the usual limitations imposed by the harmony of all our organs and tissues. -

GRANDI & ASSOCIATI TRANSLATION RIGHTS Frankfurt Bookfair 2014 Agent’s Centre Table 2M www.grandieassociati.it FICTION Carmine Abate, LA FESTA DEL RITORNO Mondadori, October 2014, pp. 180 Set amid an Albanian minority community living in Italy’s Calabria region, the novel tells the story of Marco and his enchanted childhood in a land of distinctive scents and flavours, and of how he yearned for his migrant father. It is the tale of a son who discovers his father, and a father his son, before a crackling fire over Christmas, where everyone in the town has their own personal story to tell. With characters who speak their own pidgin language, Abate’s coming of age fairy tale crosses two generations. It speaks of love and learning, and offers valuable insights into the experience of migration. Originally published in 2004 and short-listed for the Campiello Prize, this is a new edition of Carmine Abate’s novel. Carmine Abate was born in 1954 in Carfizzi, an Alabanian settlement in Calabria. He emigrated to Hamburg when he was a young man and now lives in Trentino. He began his writing career in Germany with Den Koffer und weg! (1984), and in 2012, his novel La collina del vento won the Premio Campiello. His books have been translated in French, English, German, Dutch, Greek, Portuguese, Albanian and Arabic. Eraldo Affinati, VITA DI VITE Mondadori, September 2014, pp. 168 Khaliq was born in Sierra Leone and has survived some life-threatening experiences. He grows up in the Città dei Ragazzi in Rome, where he meets professor Affinati, who turns out to be far more than a mere teacher. -

Reference BURKHARDT, Sandra Esther. Qpp Quantum Paradigm Psychopathology Group a Global Scientific Initiative
qpp Quantum Paradigm Psychopathology Group a global scientific initiative Research Institute for Quantitative and Quantum Dynamics of Living Organisms Center for Medicine, Mathematics & Philosophy Studies The Quantum Paradigms of Psychopathogy (“QPP") initiative began in June 2008. At that time Donald Mender, M. D., a psychiatrist on the clinical faculty of Yale University, conducted an informal poll of scientific contributors to a series of three Quantum Mind conferences affiliated with the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. These meetings had sought to explore the relevance of quantum physics to sentient processes in the normal brain. In 2017, the QPP Italy is set up in Bologna as an emanation of the QPP World in order to allow a more agile exchange of information among the European members of the Group. Since 2012, the QPP has organized a meeting every year and, today, we are at the eighth edition of the QPP Meeting. This 2019 edition is dedicated to our friend Kary Mullis who has reached the end of his life story. An end to the dialogue but certainly not of the example and the teaching. Speech Given by Prof. Umberto Veronesi on Receiving an Honorary Doctorate for His Work in Humanizing Medicine
Speech given by Prof. Umberto Veronesi on receiving an honorary doctorate for his work in humanizing medicine King’s College London, November 3, 2011 The conferral of this honorary degree by one of the most prestigious universities in the world is a sign of international recognition of Italy as the birthplace of the principle of bodily integrity in the treatment of cancer. It was in Italy, in the late 1960s, that the tradition emerged of respecting integrity of the body, as a counterpart to integrity of the mind, and hence that the culture arose of acknowledging the psychological aspect of diseases, which always have two dimensions: the clinical element studied by the medical professional and the human element as experienced by every patient. We have expanded the scope of medicine from the quantitative improvement of life – that is, prolonging its duration – to the qualitative improvement of life, in the belief that a life without quality is only a half-life. Indeed, I am receiving this recognition for clinical studies that introduced a new paradigm in cancer treatment. Italian research showed that the principle to be followed in deciding on a course of therapy is not that of the maximum tolerable (that is, the greatest dose or intervention that a patient can tolerate) but that of the minimum effective (namely, the treatment which, effectiveness being equal, ensures the least level of invasiveness or toxicity for the patient). This brought about a Copernican revolution in oncology, which, once it spread, enabled therapeutic excesses to be avoided, thereby putting an end to unnecessary disfigurements and surgical removals. -
