(Lamiaceae) species are used by many people in various villages and towns for the therapeutic value of their essential oils. Salvia dichroantha Stapf is an endemic plant of the Irano-Turanian phytogeographic region. Plant materials were collected during the flowering period from Konya Cihanbeyli (900 m) and Konya Taşkent (1800 m). In this study, water-distilled essential oil of Salvia dichroantha was analyzed. The analysis was performed by using a gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS) systems, simultaneously. Eight compounds were identified from the oil of Taşkent representing 96.2 % of the total oil and nine compounds were identified from the oil of Cihanbeyli representing 98.3% of the total oil. The major components were found as caryophyllene oxide (38.6%), caryophyllenol I (16.7%), caryophyllenol II (15.6%) and caryophylladienol II (11.1%) for Taşkent; caryophyllene oxide (65.8%), caryophyllenol II (14.3 %) for the oil of Cihanbeyli.

In addition, commercially important culinary and aromatic plants of Lamiaceae were also highlighted. Keywords: Lamiaceae, essential oil, aromatic plant Introduction Turkey is situated in geographically between 42°N and 36°N altitudes. She is under the influence of three different climates, namely: Mediterranean, Continental, Oceanic. Her transect is between the sea level and 5137 m (Mt. Ararat). Anatolia is a peninsula thrusting from east to west. She has land in Anatolia and Thrace being at the junction of Asia and Europe. Turkey covers ca. 0.8 million sq. km. and supports ca. 80 million of human population in the rich flora and fauna. Turkey is at the junction of three phytogeographic regions. Aegean and Mediterranean coastal areas are under the Mediterranean influence. Central and eastern parts enjoy the Irano-Turanian influence and the northern parts are affected by the Euro-Siberian phytogeography.

The physical properties, chemical composition, and cholinesterase inhibitory activity were determined. Six major components, all sesquiterpenes, were identified: cis-cadina-1(6),4-diene (17.11%) (1), γ-curcumene (13.75%) (2), (E)-caryophyllene (12.58%) (3), (E,E)-α-farnesene (10.00%) (4), α-gurjunene (9.46%) (5) and allo-aromadendrene (6.96%) (6). The EO showed an interesting selective inhibitory activity against the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (50.70 μg/mL) and only low inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (117.60 μg/mL). The chemical composition and butyrylcholinesterase activity of the EO of S. pichinchensis Benth was reported for first time. Keywords: Salvia pichinchensis; essential oil; GC-MS analysis; in vitro ChE inhibitory activity, cis-cadina- 1(6),4-diene. © 2020 ACG Publications. All rights reserved.

(Lamiaceae) in the Syrian Coast. Dr . Abd Allah Barakat 1 Dr . Dina Haddad 2 Dimah Ali Zreikah 3 (Received 28 / 10 / 9142. Accepted 27 / 2 /9142 ) ABSTRACT This study focused on the comparison of the morphological characteristics of 7 species of the genus Salvia L.: S. viridis L., S. viscosa Jacq, S. judaica Boiss, S. tomentosa Miller, S.sclarea L., S. verbenaca L., S. fruticosa Miller. in term of plant shape, leaf type, inflorescence, flowers, calyx, corolla, bracts, type of (stamens, trichomes and fruits), In the two species S. fruticosa and S. tomentosa the corolla distinguished by straight upper lip and the stamens of type A, while in the others species the upper lip was falcate and the stamens of type B. The trichomes differed between non-glandular (one - three cells) on the vegetative and reproductive organs are abundant and longer when the organs are young, and glandular also on the vegetative and reproductive organs, and secretive glandular (peltate and capitate) mainly on leaves and calyces. The fuits were nutlet trigonous, glabrous, ovoid or oblong. Key Words: Salvia, inflorescence, calyx, corolla, bracts, stamens type, trichomes, fruit. 1 Associate Professor, Department of Botany, faculty of Sciences, Aleppo University, Aleppo, Syria. 2 Associate Professor, Department of Botany, faculty of Sciences, Tishreen University, Lattakia, Syria. 3 Postgraduate Student, Faculty of Sciences, Aleppo University, Aleppo, Syria.
