Ernst Lubitschs lustigste amerika- nische Stummfilm- komödie erzählt brillant von zwei Pariser Paaren, die – etwas gelang- weilt von ihrem institutionalisierten Eheleben – über Kreuz zu flirten beginnen. Die turbulente sex comedy, in der neben den Girauds und Lallés der Tanz die Hauptrolle spielt, gipfelt in einem furios montierten Charleston-Wettbewerb. Moussierend und höchst ergötzlich. , D 1912, 12 Min., 35 mm, FSK: k. A., viragierte Fassung, Regie: Gustav Trautschold, mit: Gustav Trautschold, Kitty Dewall, Hanns Kräly u. a. Professor Moralski, ein besonders gefürchteter Zensor, wird von Film- leuten geleimt: Eine junge Schauspielerin macht sich an ihn heran, und die versteckte Kamera filmt den Sittenwächter in flagranti. Die frühe deutsche Filmkomödie reflektiert nicht nur ihre eigenen technischen und ästhetischen Mittel, sondern auch die erzkonservative „Kinoreformbewegung“ in Deutschland, deren Akteure fantasievoll als Heuchler entlarvt werden. Da Rollo auf die Hochzeitsreise nach Honolulu nicht verzichten will, macht er sich ohne Braut auf den Weg. Er landet jedoch auf dem falschen Dampfer, dem stillgelegten „Navigator“, der bald steuerlos auf das offene Meer treibt. An Bord befinden sich nur Rollo und – zufällig – Betsy. Für die beiden, die zunächst voneinander nichts ahnen, beginnt eine turbulente Reise, die sie zuletzt in die Gewalt von Kannibalen führt. Buster Keatons bei Publikum und Kritik erfolgreichster Film. Sie hat Tem- perament und Lei- denschaft und wi- ckelt damit jeden Mann um den Finger. Die Gang- sterbraut Jenny von der Hambur- ger Reeperbahn ist deshalb als die Carmen von St. Pauli bekannt. Auch der Boots- maat Klaus ver- liebt sich unsterb- lich in sie. Jenny ist der Star in der Hafenkaschemme „Zum Guten Ankergrund“ und macht mit Schmugglern gemeinsame Sache. Ihretwegen vernach- lässigt Klaus zunehmend seinen Dienst, bis er entlassen wird. Der Verführungskraft Jennys vollends verfallen, lässt er sich in die dunklen Geschäfte der „Hafenratten“ einspannen und gerät schließ- lich sogar in Verdacht, einen Rivalen ermordet zu haben, mit dem er um Jennys Gunst konkurrierte … „Die Carmen von St. Pauli“, eine sehr freie Bearbeitung der Oper von Bizet, ist eine Entdeckung. Ständig wechselt der Film seine Richtung, vom Krimi zum Liebesmärchen zur Tingeltangelkomödie. Auf dokumentarische Außenaufnahmen aus dem Hafen folgen Studioszenen in den spätexpressionistischen Kulissen des „Guten Ankergrunds“. Toll ist in dem Film nicht nur die Atmosphäre im Hafenviertel und sein Blick fürs Alltägliche. Auch die Handlung erwächst aus dieser Umgebung und schält sich gewissermaßen aus dem Dunkel der Nacht, dem Himmel, dem Meer und dem Treiben der Menschen. Toll ist auch Jenny Jugo. Lillian Gish als Farmers- mädel aus Virginia, das nach Texas gebracht und zur Hochzeit ge- zwungen wird. Die Frustration über das ihr unerträgliche Leben finden seine Entsprechung im Bild des übermächtigen Präriewinds, der beständig anbrandet, Sand und Staub durch alle Öffnungen trägt, die junge Frau in die Umnachtung zu treiben droht. Sjöströms Verschränkung von Landschaft und Psyche erreicht hier den Zenit: Tosen des Traumas zwischen Eros, Thanatos und Wahn als Melodrama der Naturgewalten. Fritz Lang kreierte ein filmisches Pendant zu dem deutschen Helden- epos, dem Nibelungen- lied: Seiner monumen- talen Wucht und den kühnen Bildentwürfen ver- dankt das Filmgedicht seinen Status als eines der wichtigsten Werke der deutschen Filmge- schichte. Der erste Teil erzählt in sieben Gesängen das Leben des Helden Sieg- fried, der einen Drachen erschlägt, den sagenhaf- ten Nibelungenschatz er- beutet und die schöne Kriemhild ehelicht, bevor sich das Schicksal gegen ihn wendet. Mit der Schlachtensequenz machte Lang der Hegemonie Hollywoods in Sachen Aktions- und Massenszenen erfolgreich Konkurrenz. Gegen die verblendeten Alten bringt Lubitsch einen verschmitzten Apotheker in Stellung und führt den Beweis, dass jugendlicher Überspanntheit wie ver- bohrtem Altersstarrsinn letztlich nur mit List und Pragmatismus beizukommen ist. Stan und Ollie als Kontrahenten in der Steinzeit: 4.000 Jahre vor Christi Geburt sind „Little Twinkle Star“ und „Mighty Giant“ auf der Jagd nach Frauen. Ein Gesetz schreibt vor, dass jeder Mann ab 18 binnen 24 Stunden eine Frau zu ehelichen hat. Der Filmtitel entspringt einer Dialogzeile von „Mighty Giant“, der bei Frauen gut Wetter machen will und ist reiner Surrealismus. So., 30.12. um 18 Uhr ~ 7 ~ Die Nibelungen – Kriemhilds Rache ~ 8 ~ .

    4 Raiding the archive: film festivals and the revival of Classic Hollywood Julian Stringer History becomes heritage in various ways. Artifacts become appropriated by particular historical agendas, by particular ideologies of preservation, by specific versions of public history, and by particular values about exhibition, design, and display. (Arjun Appadurai and Carol A. Breckenridge)1 Film Studies has to date paid too little attention to the role cultural institutions play in the transformation of cinema history into heritage. At the dawn of cinema’s second century, a range of organisational bodies – including museums and art galleries, the publicity and promotion industries, film journalism and publishing, as well as the academy – work to activate and commodify memory narratives concerning the movies’ own glorious and fondly recalled past. Such bodies serve different kinds of agendas, broadly identifiable as the commercial, the cultural and the educational (or a combination thereof). However, all help determine the specific shape of current thinking regarding cinema’s past, present and future. At a time when more films than ever before are being exhibited on a greater number of different kinds of screens than ever before, the cumulative effect of all this institutional activity is to create consen- sus around which films should be remembered and which forgotten. With so many ‘old’ and contemporary titles jockeying for position at the multiplex and the art cinema, on television and cable, video, DVD and the Internet, as well as in the classroom, the relatively small number of titles eventually sold, projected, written about, taught or revived, will be largely confined to those legitimised for one reason or another by these different kinds of organisational bodies.

    The Cinema as Time Machine: Temporality and Duration in the Films of Abel Gance Paul Cuff1 Abel Gance seemed to warp peoples’ perception of time, just as his work embodied the durational extremes of cinema. On the one hand, he was “an apostle in cinema’s Middle Ages” (Cinéa, 1 September 1923) – a builder of vast celluloid edifices that stretched over multi- ple hours and took days or weeks to project. Contemplating these films, Jacques Thévenet felt the same sense of “wonderment” as he did when standing before a gothic cathedral (Comœdia, 25 December 1922); religious images were often used about creator and creations. “Abel Gance is becoming God”, the arts columnist Bing remarked: “At his command, light is let loose and a world is fashioned according to his will.” To encounter the filmmaker was to fall out of step with time. His Paris apartment was saturated in Renaissance décor and visitors were transfixed by Gance’s “misty eyes, lost in a luminous dream” and his “long, flowing hair which seems to flutter in the breath of some distant chimera” (Fantasio, 1 December 1930). Yet, at the other end of this experiential scale was the modernist freneticism of Gance’s editing, which could accelerate to the rate of one frame per shot – the filmstrip’s maximum unitary velocity. While this revo- lutionary technique was deeply influential on other directors, satirists joked that it caused “neuralgia and nervous fits” among inno- cent spectators (Cyrano, 26 February 1928). Critics likewise deemed Gance a “barbarous” artisan who “irritates and exhausts us with [his] virtuosity” and “the ceaseless movement of [his] images” (Bardèche and Brasillach 1935, 242-3).

    elcome to the San Francisco Silent Film Festival for five days and nights of live cinema! This is SFSFFʼs twenty-third year of sharing revered silent-era Wmasterpieces and newly revived discoveries as they were meant to be experienced—with live musical accompaniment. We’ve even added a day, so there’s more to enjoy of the silent-era’s treasures, including features from nine countries and inventive experiments from cinema’s early days and the height of the avant-garde. A nonprofit organization, SFSFF is committed to educating the public about silent-era cinema as a valuable historical and cultural record as well as an art form with enduring relevance. In a remarkably short time after the birth of moving pictures, filmmakers developed all the techniques that make cinema the powerful medium it is today— everything except for the ability to marry sound to the film print. Yet these films can be breathtakingly modern. They have influenced every subsequent generation of filmmakers and they continue to astonish and delight audiences a century after they were made. SFSFF also carries on silent cinemaʼs live music tradition, screening these films with accompaniment by the worldʼs foremost practitioners of putting live sound to the picture. Showcasing silent-era titles, often in restored or preserved prints, SFSFF has long supported film preservation through the Silent Film Festival Preservation Fund.     BFI NATIONAL ARCHIVE & PHOTOPLAY PRODUCTIONS PRESENT ABEL GANCE’S NAPOLEON (1927) ENTERING THE DIGITAL ERA FOR UK-WIDE THEATRICAL AND BLU-RAY/DVD RELEASE London – 27 January 2016. The BFI today announces a new chapter in the epic history of one of the world’s greatest films: Abel Gance’s Napoleon (1927). In the culmination of a 50-year project, Academy Award™-winning film historian Kevin Brownlow and the BFI National Archive have completed a new digitally restored version of Abel Gance’s cinematic triumph. From Autumn 2016, for the first time ever, audiences across the UK will be able to experience this extraordinary cinematic masterpiece with Carl Davis’ magnificent score when the film goes on theatrical release in UK cinemas and is available on BFI DVD/Blu-ray and BFI Player. This legendary 5 ½ hour film was first presented, partially restored, at the BFI London Film Festival in 1980. The latest digital restoration of Napoleon will have its premiere screening with a live performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra of Carl Davis’ score (the longest ever composed for a silent film) in early November 2016 at the Royal Festival Hall. This project has been achieved thanks to major work undertaken by the experts of the BFI National Archive and Photoplay Productions working with Dragon DI post-production in Wales, and to the generosity of Carl Davis and Jean Boht, who have made possible the recording of the score by the Philharmonia. The original restoration of the 35mm film elements in 2000 was funded by the generous support of the Eric Anker-Petersen charity, with the support of many archives around the world but especially the Cinémathèque Française and the Centre Nationale de la Cinématographie in Paris.
