Photo: Aad Hoogendoorn. eman Chong is an artist whose work dissolves boundaries among literature and the performing and visual arts. As the chief Harchitect of the Moderation(s) project, he expanded his role to include that of institutional curator, employing a range of collaborative methodologies to investigate new ways of refreshing modes of production. In this conversation, through dialogue with Moderation(s) participant and art historian Lee Ambrozy, Heman Chong elaborates on the strategies this multi-platform project employed to expand what contemporary art production can be. He elaborates on the goals and methodologies embedded within the project, revealing how Singaporean art collectives of the 1990s, Contact Improvisation, and graphic design inspired the program for Moderation(s). The collaborative frameworks that emerged over twenty-four months in Moderation(s) revealed the fragility of epistemological hierarchies within the art world and the permeable boundaries between the roles that have come to be established with it. The resulting situations expanded and blurred the roles of the participants, and, similarly, migration between two geographically and culturally divergent centres—Witte de With in Rotterdam and Spring Workshop in Hong Kong—lent Moderation(s) an ephemeral character that eluded conventional definition. Heman Chong’s remarks below demonstrate how artists’ roles have adapted to overlapping cultural contexts and shifting geographies.

    About the Artist Avita Jinhong Guo Avita Jinhong Guo was born in 1988 in Golmud, Tibetan plateau. Grew up in Qinghai and Russia. She received her BA degree of Oil Painting Department in Ilya Repin State Academic of Fine Arts. In 2012, she was offered scholarship for MA Fine Art degree in University Arts of London, she graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in 2015. In 2017, she paused her Mphi/PhD of Material and Visual Culture of Anthropology in University College of London. She was one of the chef- editors in feminism magazine HYSTERIA from 2015 to 2017, meanwhile she established the performance research group ‘White Torture’ with performance artist Bjork Grue Lidin and active often in east London underground art scene. In 2017 and 2018, she had experimental personal projects showed in 305 Space. Her current works pay attention on the collapse in between personal inner land and realistic political society, the changes of the political filed and personal position in the modernity at large, the changes of the poetic moments in between inner mind and outer cracks. From 2019, she started to re-paint again and trying to explore the relationship between painting and her formal video installation experiments. Ho Rui An Ho Rui An was born in 1990 in Singapore. He is an artist and writer working in the intersections of contemporary art, cinema, performance and theory. Working primarily across the mediums of lecture, essay and film, he probes into the shifting relations between image and power, focusing on the ways by which images are produced, circulate and disappear within contexts of globalism and governance.

    Benjamin Hampe When Chan Hampe Galleries opened its doors in 2010, the gallery’s aim was to “create a platform for East-West cultural exchange by exhibiting and promoting contemporary art with a primary focus on Singapore”. As the gallery developed, the emphasis on “East-West” became less relevant. “East-West” was far too simplistic a description for the programme and the complex art practices it represented. Wei Leng Tay is one of many Singaporean artists working abroad, including Heman Chong, Ho Tzu Nyen, Suzann Victor, and Ming Wong, who represent Singapore in various biennales, exhibitions, and art fairs. The idea of a “Singaporean artist” is linked to a porous concept of “Singaporean-ness”, a principal characteristic of which is racial diversity. Many years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Wei Leng’s Discordant Symmetries exhibition at the NUS Museum Baba House (Singapore, 2011). She approached this project, even though she had by then not lived in Singapore for more than a decade, from the perspective of a third-generation ethnic Chinese—born, bred and largely educated in Singapore. However, setting up base in Hong Kong, a place more ethnically homogenous and familiar, and yet less welcoming than her home country, had stirred deep-seated questions about difference and inclusion. This experience and the nuances behind these perceptions continue to inform Wei Leng’s practice. The issues and perspectives illuminated by Wei Leng for her show are very close to my heart as someone with mixed parentage. I constantly strive to understand myself and have come to embrace who I am as a “Millennium Child”, a term endearingly tagged onto me by my playwright friend, Bille Brown.

    Ming Wong’s Imitations Barbara Mennel Ming Wong’s Art of Imitation Life of Imitation—the installation prepared by Singaporean performance and multi- media artist Ming Wong for his solo exhibition in the Singapore Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale—restages a pivotal scene from Imitation of Life, Douglas Sirk’s famous 1959 Hollywood maternal melodrama, closely replicating its stage blocking of characters, dialogue, and shot composition. To pass as white, Sarah Jane had previously run away and renounced her mother, who was only able to track her down with the help of a private detective. After a confrontation between the two in a motel room, which ends in a tearful embrace, Sarah Jane’s friend (billed as “Showgirl”) happens to enter and becomes a witness to Sarah Jane’s racial passing, which her mother reinforces by pretending to be her former mammy.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 15 April 2009 Singapore at 53 rd Venice Biennale 7 June – 22 November 2009 (Vernissage: 4 - 6 June 2009) Venue: Palazzo Michiel del Brusa, Cannaregio Internationally recognised visual artist Ming Wong will represent Singapore at the 53rd Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition this year. A graduate of the Slade School of Art (UK) and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore), Wong is presently based in Berlin, Germany, where he undertook a one year artist residency at the prestigious Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in 2008. Wong has made significant in-roads internationally with his participation in numerous group and solo visual arts exhibitions in Europe, North America and Asia; notable recent showcases include the Images Festival in Toronto Canada, Vain Efforts in Sydney Australia, S1 Salon in UK and the Jakarta Biennale. Wong’s works are currently on display at the At Home Abroad showcase at 8Q SAM, for Singapore artists who are well received overseas. This will be Singapore’s 5th consecutive presentation at the Venice Biennale. The Commissioner for the Singapore Pavilion is Lim Chwee Seng, Director of Visual Arts & Resource Development, National Arts Council (NAC), while Tang Fu Kuen, an authority in managing multi-disciplinary arts showcases, serves as curator. Said Lim Chwee Seng, “The Venice Biennale is a global cultural platform that provides high visibility and connectivity for participating artists and curators from around the world. Together with the Singapore Biennale and the Singapore Art Show organised by NAC in Singapore, our participation in the Venice Biennale forms part of our all-rounded approach to the development of Singapore’s traditional and contemporary art practices.
