The programme included a premiere of ‘Blossoms’, a work by composer and Cultural Medallion recipient Phoon Yew Tien, commissioned specially for the occasion; Concert ‘Pearls’, composed by Senior Teaching Fellow Eric Watson; and ended on a high note with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony performed by the NAFA Orchestra and Chorus. Joining them were vocal soloists from NAFA’s degree partner, the Royal College of Music, London – Janis Kelly, Justin Lavender and Roderick Earle, and NAFA’s Head of Vocal Studies, Jessica Chen.

On The Train of Life This was followed with the staging of ‘On the Train of Life’ on 20 and 21 April 2013. Directed by Senior Lecturer Zhang Jing from the Department of Theatre, this critically acclaimed production adapted from four stories by Anton Chekhov depicted the longing and struggle for a better life, and the joy and sorrow of ordinary people in society.

This one-night only performance featured a new dance piece titled ‘Swirling’ by Jeffrey Tan. Osman Abdul Hamid recreated ‘Arus Masa’ (Tides of Time), a contemporary Malay dance; and James Cousins presented for the first time in Singapore ‘Everything and Nothing’, which bagged him the coveted New Adventures Choreographer Award (2011).

Renowned artists were invited to give workshops and lectures to inspire and enrich students’ artistic creation: - One-week workshop in collaboration with local design studio, Desinere to create full-scale furniture prototypes using cardboards. - Students participated in ‘CultureLink’, a workshop on Asian traditional dance, and a bronze casting workshop by Italian sculptor Anna Chiara Spellini. Both workshops were organised by the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts. - Students participated in the interdisciplinary projects, ‘What the Blog’re We Doing’, ‘We Live as We Dream’ and ‘Ecology in the Urban City’ by Bruno Louis, Founder of EKOBO, a collaboration with the Institute of Southeast Asian Arts. The latter resulted in an exhibition titled ‘An Interdisciplinary Project: Ecology in the Urban City’ at Lim Hak Tai Gallery, NAFA. - Half-day workshop by critically acclaimed Hong Kong artist and creative director, Stanley Wong. - Lecture series featured four guest designers: Roberto Capecci from LAND-I archicolture, Dannie Seow from Potato Studio, ARTS MANAGEMENT & EDUCATION Envisioning the future of arts. Comprising visual arts and performing arts majors, the Department offers two diploma programmes: the Diploma in Arts Management programme equips students with industry- relevant knowledge and practical skills; the Diploma in Art Teaching programme collaborates with the National Institute of Education to train art teachers for local secondary schools. Students were emcees at the Young Talents Concert in November 2013, and the F J Benjamin – NAFA SYT Music Competition Prize Presentation Ceremony and Prize Winners’ Concert in January 2014.

Department of Junior Music

Staged three concerts showcasing the musical talent of 51 students aged between seven and 17 in November 2013. These concerts served as a warm-up to the National Piano & Violin Competition in December 2013.

Organised the third F J Benjamin – NAFA SYT Music Competition for Western instrumentalists, and three winners walked away with a total of S$30,000 in cash prizes.
