  • The Houston Memorial Dive
www.usshouston.org Diver’s Report, March 2002. By David Faltot. 3/26/02 THE DIVER’s REPORT: (March 2002) The USS Houston (American heavy cruiser) began its final journey late in the day of February 28, 1942. It had been operating in the Java Sea as part of the ABDA (American, British, Dutch, Australian) task force and had been badly mauled by the Japanese during the Battle of the Java Sea the previous day. The Houston and the HMAS Perth (Australian light cruiser) were making a night run toward the northeast entrance of the Sunda Strait to attempt to escape from the Japanese and into the Indian Ocean. Intelligence reports indicated that the Sunda Strait was free of Japanese warships. No one knew that the Japanese were planning the invasion of Java that same night by way of the northeast entrance to the Sunda Strait and Banten Bay, on the northwest tip of Java. Just before midnight the Houston and Perth ran directly into one of the largest Japanese task forces of World War II. The ensuing battle resulted in the loss of several Japanese ships but also of the Houston and the Perth. Both ships sank with the bulk of their crews. Japanese patrol boats machine-gunned survivors while they were in the water and many were swept into oblivion by the strong currents of the Straits. The survivors who remained were picked up by the Japanese and worked until the end of the war in Japanese slave labor camps in Burma, where many died of malnutrition and disease.

Universitas Indonesia Library >> UI - Tesis (Open) Dua pelabuhan satu selat: sejarah pelabuhan merak dan pelabuhan bakauheni di selat sunda 1912-2009 = Two port one strait : the history of merak port and bakauheni port in sunda strait from 1912 to 2009. 1959 to 2009 Andi Syamsu Rijal, author Deskripsi Lengkap: http://lib.ui.ac.id/detail?id=136623&lokasi=lokal ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Abstrak Tesis ini ingin mengungkap dan memahami sejarah Pelabuhan Merak dan Pelabuhan Bakauheni yang berada di Selat Sunda dari tahun 1912 sampai 2009.

p-ISSN: 2477-3328 International Summit on Science Technology and Humanity (ISETH2019) e-ISSN: 2615-1588 Advancing Scientific Thought for Future Sustainable Development Stakeholders’ Perception of Safety Prioritization at Ship Services in the Sunda Strait Khoirul Anwar1 1 Civil Engineering Master Candidate, Universitas Indonesia Corresponding Author (e-mail: [email protected]) Abtract The role of shipping safety in the sea transportation system is absolutely calculated. Shipping safety concerns the transportation of goods and people crossing the ocean in full danger and the threat of storms, fog and movements and seas such as waves, currents, sea corals, siltation and fixed and changing shipping lanes, making sea transportation in shipping at high risk. This study aims to 1) Know the variables that affect the level of safety of the Roak Ro-Roakeuni Ro-Ro Crossing Ship; 2) Analyzing the level of safety of transportation safety from the Sunda Strait. Methods of collecting data directly in the field and collecting secondary data. The results of the study show that the variables that affect ship safety include infrastructure, facilities and culture. The most influential factor on ship safety in the Sunda Strait is a cultural factor. Based on the results of the safety safety analysis, the Sunda Strait has a high level of vulnerability due to the density of ship traffic and the lack of Aids to Navigation in the Sunda Strait. Keyword: Shipping Safety, Sea Transportation, Sunda Strait INTRODUCTION Several cruise accidents have occurred in this country and made hot news in the television and in the newspapers. Safety issues are one of the most discussed maritime topics (Mockel et al, 2014).
