A.D. 110) 2:2-4, “Suf fer me to be food to the wild beasts; by whom I shall attain unto God. For I am the wheat of God; and I shall be ground by the teeth of the wild beasts, that I may be found the pure bread of Christ. Rather encourage the beasts, that they may become my sepul cher; and may leave nothing of my body; that being dead I may not be trou ble some to any.” Sim i larly, the con tem po rary Polycarp writes,2 “I exhort all of you that ye obey the word of righ teous ness, and exercise all patience; which ye have seen set forth before our eyes, not only in the blessed Ignatius, and Zozi mus, and Rufus; but in others among yourselves; and in Paul himself, and the rest of the apos tles.” We hear of Arius first in A.D. 313 pleading for resto ra tion of primi tive purity in an Alex andrian church gone worldly. The leader of the worldly fac tion, Athanasius, could hardly accuse Arius of being too hon or able; so after five years he accused Arius of heresy for not calling God a Trin ity.3 Ultimately the Athana sians poi- soned Arius to death and called it the righteous judgment of God. About A.D. 538, Jacobus Baradaeus (lit er ally, James of rags, as he declined to spend money on cloth ing), of Syria, defended the monophysite con cept of Jesus at his first advent having just one nature, the human. He ranged from Egypt to Baby lon and ordained 80,000 bish ops. (The mod ern Syr ian Orthodox Church descended from him, and remains Monophysite.) The Paulicians in Asia were outside the Cath olic Church, and began evange liz ing in Europe. Likely from them came the moder ate Cathars (lit. Puri tans, though the Cath olic hier ar chy called them “Ketzer,” her e tics). Already in A.D. 1140, in Monteforte, they said Jesus did not have a soul, but by identity he was a soul. They looked for ward to the “Reju ve na tion Day.” Other notable pre-Ref orma tion Christians include Peter Waldo and the Waldenses in the Alps; John Wycliffe, who before Wil liam Tyn dale’s time trans lated the Bible into Eng lish (though it would be incom pre - hensi ble a cen tury later), had follow ers who were called Lollards; in Poland/Czech Republic; and Johann Wessel-Gansfort in the Neth er lands, who said, “It is not by works, but in works, that faith lives.” All faced oppositi on, most were hunted, and some were burned at the stake.

George Stetson (1814-1879) The first Stetsons from England arrived in 1634, fourteen years after the May flower and the Pilgrim s landing in America. For over forty years George Stet son followed in the footsteps of Christ and asso ci- ated with Henry Grew and George Storrs in his early min is try, and even later with Jonas Wendell and Charles Rus sell (Re prints, p. 3821). He was not only a minis ter, but also a school teacher, and phy - si cian. As a mem ber of the he and Wendell worked together in several churches throughout Pennsyl vania and Ohio in the early 1870s. Isaac Newton: Bible Student and Scientist* saac New ton (1642-1727) was born in Lincolnshire on Christmas day nearly two months prema ture, and post - humous to his fa ther. In the super sti tion of the day, all three of these cir cum stances of his birth were considered to portend a child of excep tional abil ities, and so he was to prove. But the advo cates of ratio nal thought were invent ing a fic tion, for first and fore most New ton was a man of faith. This com mu nity has long ignored or belit tled New ton’s strong com mit ment to Chris tian ity and ear nest non-con form - ing Bible study. Although it is easy to take exception with a num ber of the details in his interpre ta tions, his keenness of mind per mit ted him to see truths that we might believe were lit tle-known until the time of the har vest. In Of the World to Come New ton shows a clear grasp of the heav enly sal va tion, the earthly sal va tion, and the “lit tle season.” He dismisses eternal torment with this opening salvo: “So then the mystery of this resti tu tion of all things is to be found in all the prophets; which makes me wonder with great admira tion that so few Christians of our age can find it there. Inspi ration of the Bible: Bible Stu dents are united in hold ing that the sacred Scrip tures, both Old and New Tes ta - ments, are inspired and are the final authority for authen tic truth. Cre ation: Bible Stu dents believe in cre ation, while admit ting for some evo lu tion in the animal cre ation, and that man (and thence, woman) was a direct cre ation of God, phys ically and mentally perfect. 03. Orig i nal Sin: Believ ing that Adam and Eve were cre ated per fect, the Bible Stu dent posi tion is that the sin of disobe di- ence in the Gar den of Eden resulted in all of their pos ter ity being born under the blight of sin, imper fec tion, and death. 04. Nature of God: The Bible Stu dent posi tion is nei ther Trin itar ian nor Uni tar ian. While they believe that Jesus is the Son of God and possess es the nature of God, the divine nature, since his res ur rec tion, they do not accept the posi tions of co- eter nity or co-equal ity between the Father and the Son. Rather than accept ing the doc trine of incarna tion, they hold that Jesus was wholly flesh while on earth, hav ing divested him self of his spiri tual nature. Nor do they accept the con cept of the holy spirit being a person; it is the dis posi tion or influence of God. 05. Nature of Man: In dis tinc tion from inher ent immor tal ity, the Bible Stu dent view is that man is mor tal by nature and immor tal ity is obtain able only by meet ing condi tions of obe dience. They hold that the human soul is not a dis tinct entity but is the result of the union of the body and the breath, or spark, of life and that death is the dis so lu tion of these two ele ments. 06. State of the Dead: Because death is the dis so lu tion of body and breath, the soul that sins dies and goes out of exis tence until the resur rec tion process begins in the future kingdom of Messiah. The Bible “hell” is the grave and nei ther a place of eter nal fire nor of conscious sep a ra tion from God. 07. Vir gin Birth: While Jesus was mirac u lously begot ten by God through the holy spirit in the womb of Mary, the Bible implies that she did not remain a vir gin there af ter and prob a bly had chil dren by Joseph after the birth of Jesus. Her nature was the same as oth ers of the fallen race, and there is no bib lical indica tion of an “immac u late concep tion” of Mary. 08. Ran som and Res ti tu tion: The main pur pose of Jesus’ first advent was to pro vide a ransom, or substitutionary atone- ment for Adam and hence the entire human race descend ing from him. This ransom was provided at the cross of Cal vary and is effi ca cious for all who have ever died. It prom ises resus cita tion from death for all humanity in Christ’s 1,000-year kingdom, along with an oppor tu nity to obtain and main tain per fect human life for eter nity. Res ur rec tion: After Jesus Christ was cru cified, he was raised to spir itual life by his father, God, and given a divine body in the express image of God’s per son. 10. The Heav enly Call ing: At his first advent, Jesus began call ing out from mankind a special class to be his church or bride. To these he prom ises a part in heaven with him self and his Father, and a kingdom role of reign ing over man kind with him self for the bless ing of all the fam ilies of the earth. Those who accept this invi ta tion make a com plete con se cra tion or com mit ment to do the will of God as they see it revealed and at the cost of a sur ren der of a right to life on earth. Sec ond Advent: As with most Chris tians, the expec ta tion that Jesus Christ would return to fin ish the work he began two thou sand years ago is an impor tant part of their faith. Most Bible Stu dents share the fol low ing beliefs in the sec ond advent: a. Object: That the object of his return is the res ur rec tion of the dead and the estab lish ment of a new world order of peace and righ teous ness in which all sin, sorrow, and death will be elim inated. b. Man ner: That Jesus returns invis ibly, at first unnoticed by the world at large, though even tu ally man ifest ing that pres - ence to all. c. Time: Though not in uni versal agree ment, the majority of Bible Stu dents feel con fident that the time for his return was in the near past (1874) and that he is in the pro cess of fin ish ing his church, evict ing the old regime of the adver sary, and super vising the prep a ra tion of Israel for kingdom work. 12. Return of Israel: The estab lish ment of the nation of Israel and the return of the Jew ish peo ple to their ances tral home - land is an indi ca tion of the res to ra tion of the favor of God to that nation, and an indi ca tion of the near ness of Mes siah’s kingdom.
