Despite moving with the times, they are, however, no longer in the best position to sort out for themselves the many problems that confront them. Corruption, money laundering, match-fixing, misplaced government interven- tion, legal disputes of various sorts, and so on, can, indeed, only be dealt with effectively if authority is clearly defined and if the status and independence of football’s governing bodies is recognised by law and they are provided with the necessary means. The Independent European Sport Review initiated by the sports ministers of the EU’s five key member states in cooperation with UEFA and FIFA is an important step in this direction. Its concludes in favour of sport being accorded a special, independent status and supports the European sport model.

FC Steaua Bucuresti v Real Betis Balompié PRESS KIT Lia Manoliu, Bucharest Thursday, 9 March 2006 - 19:00 local time Round of 16 - Matchday 10 FC Steaua Bucuresti were undone by Spanish opposition at this stage of the UEFA Cup last season, but will be looking to avoid the same fate when they line up against Real Betis Balompié in the last 16. Almost 12 months ago to the day the Romanian side saw their hopes ended by Villarreal CF at El Madrigal as Argentinian playmaker Juan Román Riquelme led the home team to a 2-0 victory. •A 3-1 first-leg victory proved enough to see Steaua negotiate their way through their first knockout round tie against SC Heerenveen. Nicolae Dica, Dorin Goian and Sorin Paraschiv were all on target as Cosmin Olaroiu's team recovered from conceding an early Arnold Bruggink goal in the Netherlands and although Heerenveen pulled one goal back in Bucharest, it was Steaua that progressed. It was the continuation of some fine form in this competition by the former European champions, who breezed through the group stage after an unbeaten campaign that brought eight points, including comprehensive victories against RC Lens and Halmstads BK - both at home. •Betis were also indebted to a two-goal first-leg lead as they edged past AZ Alkmaar to secure a place in the last 32. Brazilian pair Diego Tardelli and Robert were both on target as late goals earned the side a significant advantage in Seville, which the Dutch team clawed back at the Alkmaarderhout to take the tie to extra time.

Soccer: Opiate of the People? REVIEW ARTICLE BY MIKE LONG Anarcho-Syndicalist Review, no. 57, Winter 2012, pp. 34-38. From the weekly pick-up game in the local park, through seats in the stands at the weekend, to hours at home glued to the TV set, the world’s most popular sport by far provides millions of amateur and professional players, and hundreds of millions of fans around the planet, a temporary escape from the drudgery of their everyday existence. For a tiny handful, it can offer a way out of poverty, although very rarely to the riches and life-style that is the dream of so many boys (far fewer girls, as there is very little money to be earned in the women’s game as yet), and via their children’s success, much better than a pension for their parents. Viewed more positively, professional soccer brings larger masses of people together, and on a regular basis, than just about anything except wars. Matches at whatever level are one of the few remaining occasions when people express themselves passionately and publicly, and interact with one another instead of with anti-social computer screens and mind-numbing, hand-held electronic devices. Escapism, dulling the senses and forgetting one’s own and society’s problems for a while may be why states appear to be happy to let the matches continue, not to mention because of the divisive, quasi-nationalistic, “us vs.
