6 Message from Cazenovia College President

The following message is sent on behalf of President Chesbrough:

Dear Cazenovia College Community,

We are looking forward to welcoming students back to campus this fall, subject to guidance from New York State and public health officials.

Knowing our students’ desire to be on campus I am pleased to share that pending State approval, we are revising our academic calendar for the fall semester to move the start of classes a week earlier to Tuesday, August 18. We are also eliminating the traditional two-day fall break in October. This will enable students and faculty to complete a full semester of instruction, including finals, before leaving campus for the Thanksgiving holiday. This condensed schedule, along with changes to facilities and protocols to meet social distancing and physical density best practices, reduces the risk of exposure associated with travel to and from campus. It also enables the Col- lege to fulfill academic requirements and is the least disruptive schedule for our students.

The earlier start date means students will need to arrive on campus earlier. Details of the student move in dates and process are being finalized with everyone’s health and safety as the top priority and will be announced soon, again subject to guidance from health officials.

The dates for our First Year Summer College JumpStart program will also be shifting slightly. Summer College will begin on July 12 with remote instruction for the first three weeks. Students will then arrive on campus August 2 to begin in-person instruction through August 14.

The revised academic calendar was developed by the Fall 2020 Return-to-Campus Task Force made up of admin- istrators, faculty, and staff from across the campus. I commend them for having completed an accelerated plan- ning process that included a thorough and inclusive evaluation of several options.

The Task Force’s work continues over the coming weeks to finalize details regarding modifications to academic, residential, dining and overall campus facilities for social distancing and density requirements; adjustments to how student activities are conducted; and to establish overall health and safety protocols such as testing, PPE requirements, and cleaning/disinfecting facilities.

As additional details of the Fall 2020 Return-to-Campus plans become available, we will update the College com- munity by email and on the website at www.cazenovia.edu/return-to-campus.

On behalf of the entire Cazenovia College community, we look forward to continuing to deliver on our mission of cultivating student growth and creativity through engagement with an involved faculty and staff who provide a supportive, personalized learning environment, while keeping the health and safety of all members of our cam- pus as a top priority.

The Haven at Skanda Volunteering at Skanda, an essential service: Animal sanctuaries are included in essential services, and The Haven at Skanda has an active volunteer program providing opportunities for individuals and families to volunteer at the farm, with strict social distancing and biosecurity protocols in place. Online programming for women and girls: This spring, with partial funding from the Women’s Fund of CNY, The Haven at Skanda is launching a self-care program supporting women who have survived domestic violence, and a new girl’s leadership program, both which will occur online on secure platforms during the COVID-19 crisis. The Chamber would like to suggest you order take out from your favorite restaurant and take it to Lakeland or Lakeside Park for a family outing. Picnic tables are out in both parks.

Lakeside Boat Launch open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Inspectors are on duty checking for permits and invasive species. Be sure to wear your mask while check- ing in with your boat. Enjoy boating and fishing on Cazenovia Lake this year.

Summer Farmers Market is open Saturdays, on the Green in front of the High School. 9 to 2 Shoppers must wear masks and step up to vendor table one at a time keeping social distancing from others. Pack your patience as this is all new and we are doing this together to make the Farmers Market possible. Please try to make your purchases quickly as to not hold up other shoppers at the market. It has also been requested that no dogs are allowed at the market until further notice. We have had to do away with sampling of items at the market in order to open safely. Pre-Order and Pick Up FAQs What beer do you have available for pick up? Our selection of beer will change for each can release. The only beer that is available is what is listed to pre-order in our store on our website. Please note that if the beer is listed as “sold out” we do not have any ore of that beer available for sale. What else do you have available for pick up? The other items we have available for pre-order and pick up are listed in our store. Those items range from stickers and t- shirts, to hoodies and drinking glasses. Please check the store on line to see what is available and in what sizes. When can I pick up my order? Each batch of pre-orders will have a specific pick up date and time window. The current pre-orders will be available for pick up on Thursday, July 2nd from 3-7 pm at the brewery located at 33 Rippleton Rd, Cazenovia,NY. What happens if I can’t pick up my order in the time frame provided? If you can’t pick up the order that you have already placed, please contact us at [email protected] to cancel your order. If you have not already placed an order and can- not pick up on the day and within the time frame provided, please wait for our next release! We will have another day set soon. When are you opening the tap room? Concerts at Lakeland Park Right now, we are working towards a taproom opening date in July 6 to 8 p.m. early August. 18 Roger’s Radio Music Notes

“When tech companies delete radio from cars, it tears at the fabric of our social connectedness.” Radio World Magazine 3/31/20 (p.10) “Once again, Silicon Valley is asking us to surrender one thing in exchange for another. Yesterday it was our privacy. Today it is the radio. Tomorrow it will be our freedom.” Radio World Magazine 3/31/20 (p. 14) I've been talking on the radio now for about 14 years how controlled the distribution of music is in this country among 501(C)3 radio stations. For some confirmation you might refer to the $38,000,000.00 out-of-court settlement (just in NY State!) some recording companies and some broadcasters had to make with the NY AG (see NY AG/Payola) in 2006 for continuing to break the rules about fooling people about music with Payola. Payola was headlines back in 1960 with The American Bandstand guy and Alan Freed. Most people who remember that don't know that that's when it really got busy. In 1990 F. Dannen published “Hit Men;Power Brokers and Fast Money in the Music Business” (I gave a copy to each of the original Jazz'NCaz committee members 20 years ago). Then in 2006 there was the $38mm. And then money was offered to me (a check in the mail from some company you never heard of) 50 years later by a big university in 2012 if I'd slip in some contemporary things with my regular format. (They also offered their most-listened to shift.) That's at least 50 years of being fooled by the system. Young people can see this in everything and they want authentic things. That partially accounts for the popularity of our program. We air authentic New Orleans, Chicago, Kansas City, and NY Style- Chicago jazz. Young people love it and so do many in the rest of the world. Old jazz is like new music to huge numbers of people. This program now is listened to in every state (in Hawaii it's noontime) and many other countries. Remember what Oscar Peterson said about critics and hip pockets. People from other countries like to listen to real American jazz, so they tune in and we tell them to take a look at other Cazenovia things like the GCACC if they want something of quality from a normal part of the US. A high percentage of our listeners abroad also are inveterate travelers and what nicer place to come to than Caz. Frankly, our radio program has been referred to by knowledgeable and well-known people as the best jazz program in the US. It is driven by listeners' taste and not by the recording industry (which is what you get on 90% of the 501(C)3 college radio stations). See Roger's List on FB for list of players you would like. The Over The Air (OTA)FM range varies from about 50 miles LOS down the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal at Herkimer College, to about 25-30 miles to us hillbillies here at the beginning of the Appalachians (in this longitude).This OTA radio signal only goes west to around Weedsport (directional antenna) which includes upper Skaneateles, but it does go beyond Fulton. It can reach about 600,000 people OTA in CNY. In streaming – the world. On the radio I often refer to the fact that many artists, writers, and musicians live around here. Pat Carroll from Syracuse edited JassFax for 20 years and you can get some of the nuts and bolts of the jazz profession from a little book called 'Pat Says' from the OHA. I remember an article in the Mississippi Rag that referred to '...the torrid cornet playing of Pat Carroll.' . William B. Williams said 50 years ago: “Young people are hungry for good music.” Those young people are now 70. Old jazz is like new music to most people. Kids today are looking for authenticity.
