LEWIS Rachael Pearson Matthew Lewis‟s 1796 novel The Monk continues to attract critical attention, but the accusation that it was blasphemous has overshadowed the rest of his writing career. He was also a playwright, M. P. and slave-owner. This thesis considers the need to reassess the presentation of social power, primarily that of a conservative paternalism, in Lewis‟s dramas and the impact of biographical issues upon this. -

While some texts from Chekhov’s early period will be included, the focus will be on works from the later 1880s, 1890s and early 1900s. Attention will be given to the social and historical circumstances which form the background to Chekhov’s writings, as well as to major influences on Chekhov’s writing, notably Tolstoy. In examining Chekhov’s major plays, we will also look closely at Chekhov’s involvement with the Moscow Arts Theatre and theatre director and actor Konstantin Stanislavsky. Set texts will include: 1. The Figured Author: Authorial Cameos in Post-Romantic Russian Literature Anna Dvigubski Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Anna Dvigubski All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Figured Author: Authorial Cameos in Post-Romantic Russian Literature Anna Dvigubski This dissertation examines representations of authorship in Russian literature from a number of perspectives, including the specific Russian cultural context as well as the broader discourses of romanticism, autobiography, and narrative theory. My main focus is a narrative device I call “the figured author,” that is, a background character in whom the reader may recognize the author of the work. I analyze the significance of the figured author in the works of several Russian nineteenth- and twentieth- century authors in an attempt to understand the influence of culture and literary tradition on the way Russian writers view and portray authorship and the self. The four chapters of my dissertation analyze the significance of the figured author in the following works: 1) Pushkin's Eugene Onegin and Gogol's Dead Souls; 2) Chekhov's “Ariadna”; 3) Bulgakov's “Morphine”; 4) Nabokov's The Gift. In the Conclusion, I offer brief readings of Kharms’s “The Old Woman” and “A Fairy Tale” and Zoshchenko’s Youth Restored. One feature in particular stands out when examining these works in the Russian context: from Pushkin to Nabokov and Kharms, the “I” of the figured author gradually recedes further into the margins of narrative, until this figure becomes a third-person presence, a “he.” Such a deflation of the authorial “I” can be seen as symptomatic of the heightened self-consciousness of Russian culture, and its literature in particular. -

Richmond-Garza Parlin 119, 512-232-5708 [email protected] Understanding and Balancing Motivations Focus: Ethics and Leadership 16 September 2016 Overview: Literature, especially performance, provides concrete and practical cases that help us to understand how ethical decisions are made and to see how ethics and leadership intersect. This professional seminar will use performance texts and approaches to question the nature of the ethical challenges we face in today’s diverse and dynamic workplace. We will focus on competing motivations, using methods and cases studies with practical applications. We will investigate examples, both artistic and actual, presented in a multimedia environment. These cases allow us to recognize and understand varied and competing identities and motivations. We will explore how to achieve balance so as to ensure successful management in the modern workplace. We will develop strategies for asking ourselves productive questions which lead to positive outcomes for conflicted situations in which competing ethical and personal agendas might otherwise lead to negative, or even tragic, consequences. The goal is to develop attentiveness to those patterns of motivational conflict, which might jeopardize the health and productivity of the organization and/or community in question, and to experiment with approaches for managing them. Hands-on experience with analyzing fictional conflicts will allows us to develop our own strategies for responding to real-life tensions and pressures in a self-aware and constructive manner. Exercises will involve applying Stanislavski’s system and developing ways of defining and negotiating competing motivations and ethics, while remaining aware of the subject position of each of us in the process. -

Cultural Exchange: The Role of Stanislavsky and the Moscow Art Theatre’s 1923 and 1924 American Tours. Master of Arts (History), August 2014, 105 pp., bibliography, 43 titles. The following is a historical analysis on the Moscow Art Theatre’s (MAT) tours to the United States in 1923 and 1924, and the developments and changes that occurred in Russian and American theatre cultures as a result of those visits. Konstantin Stanislavsky, the MAT’s co-founder and director, developed the System as a new tool used to help train actors—it provided techniques employed to develop their craft and get into character. This would drastically change modern acting in Russia, the United States and throughout the world. The MAT’s first (January 2, 1923 – June 7, 1923) and second (November 23, 1923 – May 24, 1924) tours provided a vehicle for the transmission of the System. In addition, the tour itself impacted the culture of the countries involved. Thus far, the implications of the 1923 and 1924 tours have been ignored by the historians, and have mostly been briefly discussed by the theatre professionals. This thesis fills the gap in historical knowledge. -

The Mercurian A Theatrical Translation Review Volume 3, Number 4 Editor: Adam Versényi ISSN 2160-3316 The Mercurian is named for Mercury who, if he had known it, was/is the patron god of theatrical translators, those intrepid souls possessed of eloquence, feats of skill, messengers not between the gods but between cultures, traders in images, nimble and dexterous linguistic thieves. Like the metal mercury, theatrical translators are capable of absorbing other metals, forming amalgams. As in ancient chemistry, the mercurian is one of the five elementary “principles” of which all material substances are compounded, otherwise known as “spirit”. The theatrical translator is sprightly, lively, potentially volatile, sometimes inconstant, witty, an ideal guide or conductor on the road. The Mercurian publishes translations of plays and performance pieces from any language into English. The Mercurian also welcomes theoretical pieces about theatrical translation, rants, manifestos, and position papers pertaining to translation for the theatre, as well as production histories of theatrical translations. Anton Chekhov Analysis By Ryan Funes If you were to have gone out on the street and asked anyone about Mark Twain, William Shakespear, or even F. Scott Fitzgerald, you may get a positive response from the person, in that they know of the person. But, if you were to have asked about Anton Chekhov, you would probably get a dumbfounded, confused response. I would not be surprised though by those results, since Chekhov did not really have anything iconic about him or any gimmick, but when I was introduced to his short stories, I was immediatley hooked in by his themes and writing style. I really did not know what to say about the guy, but after reading and looking into his life, he was definitely a skilled dramatist, satirist, and writer. For those who are not too familiar with his life, Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, Taganrog, Russia to the son of a serf and a merchants wife. He lived a fairly well childhood and also did well in school, as he did continue on to become a medical student, and at the same time, an author who started out as a columnist for a Moscow newspaper. While his first short stories were not well recieved at first, along with a bloody play of his being under heavy censorship at the time, he continued on with his writing career, even while under the pressure of supporting his family, whose health was deterring. But, as a result of his writings, Chekhov became well known for his wit and subtle satire in his early writings.
