113 Chapter Five Absenting the Chinese Man in The Ancestor Game The novel retells again and again the story of the person who is marooned on some kind of island of metaphor and who comes upon the tracks of another self. But always it is the story of the isolated self seeking to transcend its isolation by becoming the other, the other self, through communication of the subjective reality of the self. When we were children we all asked someone close to us the awesome question, What is it really like to be you? (Alex Miller, "Chasing My Tale" 6) In an interview, Alex Miller has said that The Ancestor Game was written for a Chinese artist friend: "I followed his experience. I wanted to validate him" (Ryle 1). Notwithstanding that the character Lang Tzu Feng is at one point described as having a "mischievous, primate quality of cunning" (17), Alex Miller's The Ancestor Game (1992) has one of the more sympathetic representations of a Chinese man in recent Australian literature. Although it presents a sympathetic representation, The Ancestor Game is also predicated upon the displacement of that Chinese male subject by another. Representation, as Sneja Gunew tells us, involves two meanings, "on the one hand... as 'depiction' and on the other as 'delegation' (speaking for)" ("Playing" 87). Within this "speaking for" we can see representation is also an impulse to displace. In the second of these meanings a line of authority is assumed, a position vis-a-vis the one who is spoken for. However representation is also a practice in the absence of the one spoken for, and despite Miller's validating intentions of "speaking for", I will argue in this chapter that it is also possible to detect how ambivalent, limiting and marginalising this representation as depiction of a Chinese man is across the text, and how it is predominantly a practice of absenting the other. -

Dietmar Adler and Charles Martig Festival Review: 71st Locarno Film Festival, Switzerland, 1–11 August 2018 Religion, Politics, and Transcendence in New Cinema – Highlights One Year after #MeToo Religion is once again a robust topic in international filmmaking. Several films in the competition at the 71st Locarno Film Festival (1–11 August 2018) dealt ex- plicitly or implicitly with religion, politics, and transcendence. Outstanding films were A Land Imagined (Yeo Siew Hua, SG/FR/NL 2018), which won the Golden Leopard, and M (Yolande Zauberman, FR 2018), which deals with child abuse in a strictly Orthodox Jewish community and was awarded the Special Prize of the International Jury. The Ecumenical Jury of Signis and Interfilm decided to award its prize to Sibel (Guillaume Giovanetti / Çağla Zencirci, FR/DE/TR 2018), the story of the emancipation of a young woman in Turkey. In general, women played a prominent role in the festival’s program, not least because a pledge of gender parity was signed by festival officials, a sign of where we are one year after #MeToo. In this festival review, Dietmar Adler from Interfilm and Charles Martig from Signis offer a taste of the film program at Locarno, explore reli- gious, political, and social aspects of the films, and provide insight into the work of the Ecumenical Jury. THE WINNER FROM SINGAPORE The Asian film A Land Imagined, directed by Yeo Siew Hua, was considered an extraordinary elaboration of its topic by both the International Jury (it won the Golden Leopard) and the Ecumenical Jury. The film is set in Singapore, where migrant workers labor on land reclamation sites. -

NANTUCKET AND THE WORLD’S PEOPLE Foreword Nantucket’s English settler families were not the first inhabitants of the island, nor has there ever been a time when their progeny, the “descended Nantucketers,” were the only residents. Sarah P. Bunker, who serves as the leitmotif for these Nantucketers, lived in a house built hard by a Wampanoag burial site and inherited a basket made for her father by Abram Quary, Nantucket’s “last Indian.” When she was a girl, her father—a sea captain in the China trade—was in the habit of receiving crewmen and foreigners at home, and he employed live-in “help” to assist with the care and upkeep of what was grandly known as “the Pinkham estate.” Years later, in the straitened circumstances of her widowhood, Sarah P. supported the household by nursing injured, sick, and dying people of “all sorts” as Nantucket’s bone-setter Zaccheus Macy had done a century earlier.1 As she lived out the last decade of her life in her upstairs room, what reached her ears from downstairs day in, day out was the incomprehensible conversation of her grand- daughter-in-law’s relatives from Finland. Sarah P. knew full well that on Nantucket there were strangers to be found wherever one turned, not just in sailors boarding houses and the servants quarters of descended Nantucketers’ houses. Parts I and II have followed the history of the Wampanoags who were in possession of the island before the English came; the Africans who were brought here by the English; and many people who came from other islands in the employ of Nantucketers. -

Netherlands Film Fund – Hubert Bals Fund Co-production Scheme NFF+HBF GUIDE September 2019 NFF+HBF: Netherlands Film Fund – Hubert Bals Fund Co-production Scheme Annually, around 25 film productions are realised with the support of the Hubert Bals Fund. In order to stimulate Dutch producers to get involved in international co-productions, and to support Hubert Bals Fund projects in the stage of production, the Netherlands Film Fund and the HBF set up NFF+HBF Netherlands Film Fund - Hubert Bals Fund Coproduction Scheme. The NFF+HBF Co-production Scheme (previously HBF Plus) is a collaboration between the Netherlands Film Fund and the Hubert Bals Fund. Dutch producers can apply for financial support from NFF+HBF. Projects eligible for the NFF+HBF programme are those that have been granted HBF support for Script and Project Development at an earlier stage, and which are now looking for funds to finance the production. Annually the Netherlands Film Fund sets available an amount of € 200,000 for applications from Dutch producers who can be awarded a maximum of €50,000 production support in order to co-produce a film that has received a script development grant by HBF. The NFF+HBF Co-production Scheme offers support twice a year, with application deadlines in Spring and Fall. The next application deadline will be on 25 February 2019. NFF+HBF applications should be done at the Netherlands Film Fund. Criteria Maximum contribution is €50,000 Maximum 10% overhead and producers fee 50% of the committed amount (including overhead and fee) must
