Kieda, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT This dissertation advances a networked approach to social movements via the study of contemporary environmental protests in China. Specifically, I examine anti- paraxylene protests that occurred in 2007 in Xiamen, in 2011 in Dalian, and in 2014 in Maoming via news reports, social media feeds, and conversations with witnesses and participants in the protests. In so doing, I contribute two important concepts for social movement scholars. The first is the treatment of protests as forces majeure that disrupt networks and force the renegotiation of relationships. This turn helps scholars to trace the movement of the social via changes in human consciousness as well as changes in relationships. The second concept I advance is wild public networks, which take seriously new media as making possible different forms of protest.

  • China's Anti-Corruption Campaign and Credit Reallocation from Soes
China’s Anti-Corruption Campaign and Credit Reallocation from SOEs to Non-SOEs* Bo Li, Zhengwei Wang, and Hao Zhou PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University First Draft: March 2016 This Version: July 2018 Abstract We provide a novel empirical finding that the recent anti-corruption investigations in China are associated with credit reallocation from less productive, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to more productive, non-SOEs. The empirical strategy exploits staggered investigations as exogenous shocks to bank loan issuance among rival firms in affected industry. The main finding extends to implicated firms and non-affected industries, proves strong for extensive margins and a supply shock, and remains solid for stock market reactions. We further single out the economic efficiency channel, and to a lesser extent, the political connection channel, through which the anti-corruption campaign leads to improved credit reallocation. Keywords: Anti-corruption, credit reallocation, state ownership, economic efficiency, political connection. JEL Classification: G30, G32, G34, P26. * We would like to thank the editor Wei Jiang and two anonymous referees for comments and suggestions that substantially improved the paper. We also benefited from helpful discussions with conference and seminar participants at China Financial Research Conference (Beijing), Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Tsinghua University, Wuhan University, CREST Paris, Peking University National School of Development, China International Conference in Finance (Tianjin),

  • Yin Xiuzhen, by Pan Qing Art in America September 2010
Art in America YIN XIUZHEN September 1, 2010 By Pan Qing New Plymouth Are international travel and burgeoning communication technologies creating a single global consciousness? What would it be like to partake of a genuinely shared mind, a borderless communal memory? Can such a mentality adequately compensate for a diminishing sense of local rootedness, family and home? Collective Subconscious (2007), a sculptural installation shown last spring in the Projects space of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, is one striking example of Yin Xiuzhen's long engagement with these perplexing questions of personal and cultural identity. The 38-foot-long work is an accordionlike extension of a minivan of the sort known in Chinese as a xiao mian ("little loaf of bread"), a symbol of family prosperity in the People's Republic of the late 1990s. The artist recalls that her sister-in-law, who owned one at that time, used it both to transport goods and to gather up fellow artists, who crammed inside to travel around Beijing.1 To create the sculpture, Yin bisected a minivan and reconnected its two ends by inserting a stainless-steel armature, which, wrapped in a quilt stitched together from 400 items of discarded clothing, is intended as a haven for collective memory. Visitors enter the piece through a side doorway; inside, low stools are clustered into several conversation areas. Light shining through the multicolored patchwork evokes the "fabricated" dream of increasing wealth and comfort cherished by the early owners of such vehicles. For a soundtrack, Yin selected the Chinese pop song "Beijing, Beijing" (2007), a nostalgic melody with a tinge of the blues that recalls a simpler time in a more homogeneous place.
