My Year as a Seventh Grader - One of my favorite memories from my seventh grade year at Edison was joining the Power of the Pen team. It’s been a major part of my school year, and my experience writing. From the practices to the tournaments, I’ve had a great time watching my team members, and myself, grow and excel as writers. The frst tournament we attended was the District Competition, and even though I wasn’t awarded anything, I was still proud when my teammate, Eilis McGee, when she was awarded --th place. I’m very excited to have made it onto States, and even if I don’t place, I’m glad that I’ve been exposed to the happiness and memories that Power of the Pen has brought me. Poetry Coffee House

The students and teachers at Edison Middle School take April’s National Poetry Month very seriously. They take it so seriously, in fact, that they transformed a classroom into a Poetry Coffee House—complete with a student-created backdrop, lava lights, and treats. The entire seventh grade attended the “Coffee House” to share original poems with one another. In the tradition of the “Beatniks” of the 1950’s, students were encouraged to replace conventional applause with snapping and shouts of, “Cool, Daddy-O!” Also, following the “Beatnik” style of dress, everyone—including teachers and guests, were asked to dress in black. This practice allows the audience to focus on the words of the poet presenting, rather than becoming distracted by an outward appearance. The purpose of this activity is to foster an appreciation for the art of poetry, which is sometimes seen by this age group as boring to read or too diffcult to compose. However, by bringing these young writers all together in one room, they can learn to appreciate the different styles, topics, and approaches that can be used in creative writing. The Coffee House activity makes Edison Takes Third it easy to recognize how fun and freeing poetry can actually be! The idea for the Poetry Coffee House began as a one-classroom event, but Edison Innovators were at it again! Edison Innovators has now evolved into something that involves the entire school. Many take third place at the Rube Goldberg Challenge. This have collaborated to make this interactive lesson a success. Those who year the Robotics team, comprised of both seventh and are not involved in the organization of the activity plan to participate eighth graders, entered Goodyear’s 2015 Rube Goldberg as audience members. In fact, many of the teachers in the building are Challenge®! The challenge was for students to design just as excited as the students as this time of year approaches. Famous a creative device to fll an infatable toy Goodyear poet, Carl Sandburg once wrote, “Poetry is a packsack of invisible blimp with at least 12 intermediate steps between keepsakes.” The teachers behind this project agree. Therefore, they start and fnish. The winners were announced during believe this will be a memorable lesson for the young people involved, STEM Career Day April 18, 2015. Reading Like Writers, I Can Practice Reading Writing Like Readers! Anywhere!

At the encouragement of Principal Hug, Mrs. by Gacie Dale (frst Baker’s second grade class has started to grade) approach writing in a whole new way! After reading articles and books by Katie Wood Ray, Whipple Heights has Mrs. Baker decided she was going to study showed me lots of books. writers and have her students study writers I like to show others of a particular genre in order to model what books because they can authors do in their writing. The class began be funny or realistic. The by studying informational writers, and are animals at my papa’s pay currently fnishing up a study on narrative attention when I read to them. I hope because I practice authors. The class has read through and I can grow as a great reader! marked on sticky notes a variety of strategies and techniques writers use when writing both forms of genre. She would then teach mini lessons on craft, structure, and form. The students were immersed in thinking and reading like authors by asking “How can I do this in my writing?” However, one of the most important aspects of the learning happens each day when the students share their work aloud and others add comments and suggestions. As a result, the students are producing real writing pieces, writing so much that Mrs. Baker can’t keep up with reading the pieces, and excitedly ask each day when they can write. Instead of using graphic organizers and getting little carryover into fnal pieces, Mrs. Baker’s students are writing in “real” books and she is seeing students use techniques such as: voice, illustrations that give more details, story leads, creative use of words (all capitals for loudness), point of view, repetition or patterns. It has been an exciting shift and the most productive change in writing instruction that Mrs. Baker has seen. Bike Hike

Whipple Buddies by Kaylee Gidcumb (third grade) by Brandon Scott, Brieann Jacobs, and Alexis Dean (Miss Teske’s Class) Whipple Heights 3rd Grade went on a Bike Hike to Sippo Lake. First, we went fshing. Nobody caught any Miss Teske’s fourth grade students shared fun activities with Miss fsh. Next, we did a dirt experiment. We learned about Paris’s frst grade class this year. Miss Paris’s class went up to Miss the different layers of soil. Also, we went to the Science Teske’s fourth grade class at the beginning of the year to watch their Center. One really cool thing we saw there was snake class’s performance of the readers’ theater, Pecos Bill, and snacked chips and cheese. Later in the year, Miss Teske’s class went down to skin. Another thing we did is go to the Sanders Wildlife the frst grade room to share their writing assignments. Miss Paris’s Rehab Center. Our favorite part about our frst grade buddies was all the stuff that they did for us, like encourage us when we took the PARCC. Another part we Whipple Heights Elementary loved about our buddies was at the beginning of the year when we put on a play, and they came 4800 12th Street, NW to see it. We loved every minute of it. It was awesome hanging out with our buddies. This year Canton, Ohio 44708 our class learned a lot of things from our buddies. We realized that we are great role models for the frst graders in Miss Paris’s class. The frst graders looked up to us and made encouraging letters for the PARCC. That inspired the fourth graders for this big test. We also learned that no matter the size or age, you can be friends. Some people might think that because the frst 330-478-6177 graders are so small and little that they don’t understand real friendship, and they just go Fax: 330-478-6179 along with whatever happens. That is not true. As soon as we got together for the frst time, Mr. Joe Hug Mrs. Kathy Evans we instantly became friends.
