The Polar Record, Vol 16, No 100,1972, p 107-111 107 Printed in Great Britain OBITUARY ROLAND ERNEST BESCHEL, a pioneer in lichenometry, died on 22 January 1971. He was born in Salzburg on 9 August 1928 and obtained a D Phil in 1950 from the University of Innsbruck with a thesis on urban lichens and their growth. In 1955, he left a professorship at Rosenburg College in Switzerland for a position at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick. In 1959, he joined the biology department of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and was at his death Professor of Biology and Director of the Fowler Herbarium. He became a Canadian citizen in 1965. His fieldwork took Hm to west Greenland, to many parts of northern Canada, and to parts of the Soviet Arctic seldom, if ever, visited by westerners. His research interests were directed mainly to botanical approaches to climate and chronology, chiefly by means of dating rock surfaces. Recently he had become deeply interested in the application of computers to geobotanical problems. Lt-Col FREDERICK SPENCER CHAPMAN, DSO and bar. TD, MA. author, explorer, mountaineer, and schoolmaster, was found dead on 8 August 1971 at Wantage Hall, University of Reading. He left a wife and three sons. He was born on 10 May 1907 and spent his boyhood near the Lake District, where he early acquired a deep love of the countryside and of nature. After school at Sedbergh, he went to St John's College, Cambridge, took an honours degree in English and history, and, through friendship with Geoffrey Winthrop Young, was introduced to the world of mountaineering. -

Introduction to PicoR-Ice SNAME Presentation Notes Slide 1 – Title Thank you, SNAME Arctic, for your kind invitation to speak. This goes back to an excellent presentation earlier in the year (2018) by Bruce Calderbank on ice- related marine casualties in Canada. I asked if a blatant commercial presentation might be in order. Following last month’s update on the Arktos evacuation vehicle, the chairman invited me to deliver today’s presentation on PicoR-Ice. Thank you again. Slide 2 – The PicoR-Ice System PicoR-Ice is a ground-penetrating radar (GPR), the same technology you see on cable TV documentaries of treasure hunts and archaeological digs. But PicoR- Ice focuses on ice and snow thickness measurements. It is “non-invasive,” reducing need for drilling in ice. It processes radar returns and displays the underfoot reflection pattern instantly. And the entire system fits in a very manageable carrying bag, seen here on my back deck table with a standard champagne bottle for scale. Slide 3 – System Spec Sheet We have an engineering audience here today and so the system specifications are essential. A few highlights. Optimum ice thickness measurement down to 2 metres underfoot; snow layer thickness to 3 metres. Accurate to 2-3 cm. Transmission frequency of 1700 MHz trades off depth of penetration for increased resolution, important for operational underfoot thickness calculations. 30 to 60 pulses per second. When running vehicle-based survey, maximum vehicle speed of 40 km/h. The sensing technology is enclosed in a rugged and compact transmit-receive package (show actual module to audience). -

Frontispiece: facing page Major Caledonian syncline involving reactivated Archaean basement gneisses containing amphibolite bands. Overlying rusty coloured Mesoproterozoic metasediments (Krummedal supracrustal sequence) just visible in tight core of the fold. The intensity of deformation in the syncline clearly increases towards the core, where the basement gneisses become more strongly foliated. Some of the amphibolite bands were derived from cross-cutting basic intrusions, which are still discernable in the less severely deformed parts of the Archaean basement (Fig. 17, p. 31). The height of the section is c. 2000 m. -

ABSTRACT Silurian and Devonian strata are widely distributed on the islands of the Severnaya Zemlya and Sedov archipelagos. The Silurian is represented by fossiliferous shallow-water carbonates underlain by variegated sandstones and siltstones of Ordovician age. The Devonian consists mainly of various red sandstones, siltstones and argillites, with carbonates only in some inter- KEY WORDS vals.
