Polar Bears from Space: Assessing Satellite Imagery as a Tool to Track Arctic Wildlife Seth Stapleton1*¤a, Michelle LaRue3, Nicolas Lecomte4¤b, Stephen Atkinson4, David Garshelis2,5, Claire Porter3, Todd Atwood1 1 United States Geological Survey, Alaska Science Center, Anchorage, Alaska, United States of America, 2 Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota, United States of America, 3 Department of Earth Sciences, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States of America, 4 Department of Environment, Government of Nunavut, Igloolik, Nunavut, Canada, 5 Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Grand Rapids, Minnesota, United States of America Abstract Development of efficient techniques for monitoring wildlife is a priority in the Arctic, where the impacts of climate change are acute and remoteness and logistical constraints hinder access. We evaluated high resolution satellite imagery as a tool to track the distribution and abundance of polar bears. We examined satellite images of a small island in Foxe Basin, Canada, occupied by a high density of bears during the summer ice-free season. Bears were distinguished from other light-colored spots by comparing images collected on different dates. A sample of ground-truthed points demonstrated that we accurately classified bears. Independent observers reviewed images and a population estimate was obtained using mark– recapture models. This estimate (N^ : 94; 95% Confidence Interval: 92–105) was remarkably similar to an abundance estimate derived from a line transect aerial survey conducted a few days earlier (N^ : 102; 95% CI: 69–152). Our findings suggest that satellite imagery is a promising tool for monitoring polar bears on land, with implications for use with other Arctic wildlife.

  • Hudson Bay Ice Conditions
Hudson Bay Ice Conditions ERIC W. DANIELSON, JR.l ABSTRACT.Monthly mean ice cover distributions for Hudson Bay have been derived, based upon an analysis of nine years of aerial reconnaissance and other data. Information is presented in map form, along with diseussian Of significant features. Ice break-up is seen to work southward from the western, northern, and eastern edges of the Bay; the pattern seems to be a result of local topography, cur- rents, and persistent winds. Final melting occurs in August. Freeze-up commences in October, along the northwestern shore, and proceeds southeastward. The entire Bay is ice-covered by early January, except for persistent shore leads. INTRODUCTION In many respects, ice cover is a basic hydrometeorological variable. In Hudson Bay (Fig. 1) it might be considered the most basic of all, as it influences all other conditions so decisively.

Hard Cash Project Summary Canarc Resource Corp. ( Canarc ) is a Vancouver based gold exploration company with a number of projects in Nevada and British Columbia as well as the Hard Cash and Nigel properties in Nunavut. The Hard Cash property, consisting of Claims RLN 3-4 (K14329-30) covering 2,090 hectares on Crown Land, is located in the Ennadai Greenstone Belt in SW Nunavut on the shores of Ennadai Lake. The property is 405 km from Arviat, Nunavut, 310 km NE of Stony Rapids, Saskatchewan and is accessible by float plane or helicopter. There is an all-weather gravel airstrip at Ennadai Lake Lodge which is owned by Arctic Haven, 22 kms southwest of the property. Mineralization on the property was previously discovered by Don Cameron in 1946 at the Swamp Showing. The showing was staked and 9 shallow holes were drilled and several blast trenches excavated at the northern end of the Swamp Showing near Ennadai Lake. Giant Yellowknife Mines acquired the property in 1981 and took a claim to lease. Phelps Dodge optioned the lease and staked the surrounding area in 1995 and conducted surface exploration from 1995 to 1997. The claims were allowed to lapse and were re-staked by Panarc Resources in January 2011. In 2012, Panarc conducted prospecting and geological mapping focused on the Swamp Showing. The claims were subsequently sold to Silver Range Resources Ltd.

  • Movements and Habitat Use of Muskoxen on Bathurst, Cornwallis
MOVEMENTS AND HABITAT USE OF MUSKOXEN (Ovibos moschatus) ON BATHURST, CORNWALLIS, AND DEVON ISLANDS, 2003-2006 Morgan Anderson1 and Michael A. D. Ferguson Version: 23 December 2016 1Department of Environment, Government of Nunavut, Box 209 Igloolik NU X0A 0L0 STATUS REPORT 2016-08 NUNAVUT DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT WILDLIFE RESEARCH SECTION IGLOOLIK, NU i Summary Eleven muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) were fitted with satellite collars in summer 2003 to investigate habitat preferences and movement parameters in areas where they are sympatric with Peary caribou on Bathurst, Cornwallis, and Devon islands. Collars collected locations every 4 days until May 2006, with 4 muskoxen on Bathurst Island collared, 2 muskoxen collared on Cornwallis Island, and 5 muskoxen collared on western Devon Island. Only 5-29% of the satellite locations were associated with an estimated error of less than 150 m (Argos Class 3 locations). Muskoxen in this study used low-lying valleys and coastal areas with abundant vegetation on all 3 islands, in agreement with previous studies in other areas and Inuit qaujimajatuqangit. They often selected tussock graminoid tundra, moist/dry non-tussock graminoid/dwarf shrub tundra, wet sedge, and sparsely vegetated till/colluvium sites. Minimum convex polygon home ranges representing 100% of the locations with <150 m error include these movements between core areas, and ranged from 233 km2 to 2494 km2 for all collared muskoxen over the 3 years, but these home ranges include large areas of unused habitat separating discrete patches of good habitat where most locations were clustered. Several home ranges overlapped, which is not surprising, since muskoxen are not territorial.
