HEALTH CLINICS/DNA KITSITS Wednesday, May 2, 2018, “The Commons” (Sturbridge Room), By Appointment 9:00am-4:00pm Pre-registration required. Please indicate on registration form if you prefer AM or PM appointments. Contact Karen Fox, Health Clinic/DNA Kits Coordinator, at [email protected] if you have questions. Our thanks to the Blue Pearl Specialty & Emergency Pet Hospital in Waltham MA for making their board certified specialists and their techs available for the day. Cardiac Clinic: Dr. Kursten Pierce, DVM, DACVIM-Cardiology will perform evaluations using a state of the art electronic stethoscope to check for murmurs and other anomalies. Screening echocardiogram can be performed on request with an additional fee. OFA now issues two different clearances, one for “congenital cardiac disease” and the other for “adult onset cardiac disease”. Dogs can be examined at any age, but must be at least 1 year old for either clearance. Note: the “adult onset” clearance is only valid for one year, as many hereditary heart issues of importance to breeding decisions can develop during the dog’s lifetime. Fee: $40 Eye Clinic: Dr. Clara Williams, DVM, MS, DACVO will complete a thorough and painless examination of your dog’s eyes to detect inherited eye diseases such as cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and retinal dysplasia. Eye drops will be applied 10-15 minutes prior to the exam to dilate the pupils (the effect lasts approximately 3 hours). For this reason, we recommend scheduling your appointment for after your dog has finished competing for the day. Annual re-examination is recommended for all dogs that are involved in a breeding program. Fee: $35 Health Clinic Reminders  Forms and your appointment time(s) will be included in your registration packet. Every effort will be made to accommodate rescheduling requests due to event conflicts, but this can’t be guaranteed.  Please be on time for your appointment(s) and remember to bring your dog’s AKC registration number, date of birth, and tattoo/microchip/DNA information.  Fees cover evaluations and forms only; submission of results to OFA requires additional fees payable directly to OFA. Submission of findings to Berner-Garde is encouraged. AKC DNA Profile cheek swab test kit available at 40% off regular AKC price!Preordered test kits will be included in your registration packet and may be done during the Specialty and returned to the Health Clinic on May 2nd or completed at home and mailed to Karen Fox to be received no later than Tuesday, May 15, 2018. The completed tests must be submitted to AKC as one lot. This is a firm date, if your kit is not received by the deadline, it will not be processed and the fee will not be refunded. Each kit will include submission details. The BMDCA is once again providing a $10 subsidy to reduce the cost of this essential tool for ensuring the accuracy of our studbook. PLEASE NOTE: These tests CAN NOT be used for the DNA requirement to enter the 2018 Specialty. Fee: $30 BERNER-GARDE REPOSITORY CLINIC Thursday, May 3, 2018, 8:00am—3:00pm, “The Commons” (Sturbridge Room) Berner-Garde is once again rolling out the mobile unit to sponsor a BMD Repository clinic. DRAFT Tuesday, May 1; Wednesday, May 2; and Thursday, May 3, Westville Lake Recreation Area, 10 minutes from Host Hotel There will be four BMDCA Draft Tests at the 2018 National Specialty. Each test will offer Novice, Brace Novice, Open, and Brace Open classes, with a limit of 24 entries in each test. The tests are limited to Bernese Mountain Dogs only. All tests will be held at Westville Recreation Area, approximately 10 minutes from the host hotel. Entrants will need a DNA profile number, as well as a Berner-Garde ID number on their entry form. Premium lists will be available for download on the BMDCA website. Please address questions to Beth Atkinson, Draft Chair, at [email protected]. All entries should be sent to Alison Jaskiewicz, 576 Jackson Rd, Mason NH 03048. Prepaid lunch will be available through master registration. **IMPORTANT** Our goal is to fill each test, while accommodating as many different teams as possible. Every effort will be made to ensure each team has one chance to compete before second or additional entries will be allowed. Team—means either a single dog entry or a brace entry. Test Preference—Entrants need to specify their choice of Test# for each entry, e.g. 1st choice Test #3, 2nd choice Test #1, etc. Entry Preference—Teams wishing to enter multiple days or multiple classes need to indicate which of their entries is their first preference, second preference, etc., on the entry form. There are no guarantees that preferences will be met. *Subject to the above limitations for these Specialty tests: Untitled (in the class entered) teams have preference over titled teams. Titled teams have preference over advanced titled teams. A Brace team is not considered “titled” until both dogs are “titled”. Move-ups will be allowed. There will be a single equipment check for each test. *The BMDCA and the Draft Work Committee take dog aggression very seriously and have zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior on the part of dogs/owners and/or handlers. For a copy of the Misconduct Disciplinary Procedure, go to http://bmdca.org/Draft/BMDCA_Draft_Discipline.php , or you can contact the DWC Chair, Jennifer Brightbill, at [email protected]. By participating in or attending these tests, you understand and agree to the terms of the Misconduct Disciplinary Procedure. This procedure is a clarification of the Discipline Section of the BMDCA Draft Test Regulations. VERSATILITY SHOWCASE This stand-alone conformation competition will showcase dogs and bitches that have received the BMDCA Versatility Award. Classes will be offered for Versatility/Versatility Excellent, Dogs/Bitches Under 7 Years and 7 Years and Over, with Best in Versatility chosen from the eight class winners. Intact and altered dogs ARE eligible to compete. Since this showcase is a Special Attraction, dogs or bitches judged first in these classes will NOT be eligible for Best of Breed by virtue of having won these classes. TOP TWENTY GALA WELCOME TO THE GOLDEN JUBILEE! Join us for a Golden night of beautiful dogs at the BMDCA’s sixth annual Top Twenty Gala, which will be held the evening of Wednesday, May 2nd . This event will showcase the top conformation dogs from 2017. Entry is by invitation only and is sent to the top 20 Bernese Mountain Dogs in breed and all-breed points, as determined by AKC statistics from January 1 through December 31, 2017. Dogs will be prejudged by a three-judge panel the afternoon prior to the gala event. Each judge will evaluate the dogs on a predetermined point system, enumerating the criteria of our breed standard. The emphasis for judging is on the individual qualities of the dog and how closely he/she conforms to the breed standard. Points will be tabulated once the prejudging is completed, and the winner will be announced at the conclusion of the event. In addition, attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice Award. The Top Twenty competition will culminate Wednesday evening in the Grand Ballroom of the Sturbridge Hotel. The event will be opened to the general public to view the final showcase of the Top Twenty dogs and presentation of awards to the top winners. This event will be both entertaining and exciting as the handlers present their dogs to music chosen by them to represent the unique personalities of their dogs. The theme this year is Golden Jubilee so formal evening wear is encouraged by participants! This year in honor of the theme there will be a “Top Hats, Tiaras, and Tails” contest! So put your thinking cap on and come up with a fancy hat or headgear. There will be prizes! Honor your current top dog or one of your past greats by purchasing a 2018 celebratory grooming apron with the dog’s call name or your kennel name embellished in sparkling lettering. The aprons are available for $25 through the BMDCA online store at http://www.bmdca-store.com. They will be available for pick up at the Top Twenty ring. Top Twenty Gala donations are also very welcome and may be made through the master registration form.
