Mai 1973 fand in Wien im Rahmen des „International Geological Correlation Programme" (IGCP) ein Symposium. über die Stratigraphie der alpin­ mediterranen Trias statt. Die Finanzierung dieser Tagung erfolgte durch das IGCP, das Bundesministerium. für Wissenschaft und Forschung sowie die Österreichische Alm­ demie der Wissenschaften. Die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften ermöglichte vor allem die Herausgabe dieses Bandes. Allen diesen Institutionen sei an dieser Stelle der geziemende Dank ausgesprochen. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen 30 Arbeiten beinhalten vorwiegend die Vorträge der Tagungsteilnehmer, teils wurden sie auch unmittelbar im Anschluß an die Tagung von Fachkollegen zum Druck eingereicht und betreffen das Thema des Symposiums. Die stratigraphische Erforschung der pelagischen Trias ist seit dem letzten Jahrzehnt in raschem Fortschreiten begriffen. Es war deshalb das Ziel der Wiener Tagung, zunächst nur einen Überblick über den Wissensfortschritt und den Forschungsstand in den ein­ zelnen Regionen und Ländern zu geben. Dieser Überblick soll zunächst nur die Möglich• keit geben, die Meinungen der Fachleute verschiedener Länder zu vergleichen und eine Grundlage für weitere Diskussionen zu schaffen. Es wurde Wert darauf gelegt, für den westlichen Teil der Tethys möglichst zahlreiche zusammenfassende Darstellungen für verschiedene Länder zu veröffentlichen, die - wenn möglich - übersichtliche Tabellen der regionalen Trias-Stratigraphie enthalten. Darüber hinaus behandeln zahlreiche Arbeiten stratigraphische Gliederungen auf der Basis von Ammoniten und anderen Fossilgruppen (u. a. Mikropaläontologie). Eine Reihe regionaler Studien ist stratigraphi­ schen Detailfragen einzelner Gebiete gewidmet. Das Bild, das sich aus der Gesamtheit der Beiträge ergibt, ist von Vollständigkeit weit entfernt. Es vermittelt aber einen Einblick in den Kenntnisstand der einzelnen Regionen und es enthüllen sich auch zahlreiche offene Probleme und Wissenslücken. Nicht zuletzt zeichnen sich die derzeitigen Arbeitsgebiete der Triasforschung vieler Länder ab. Ohne Zweifel ist es das Ziel aller dieser Bemühungen in der Zukunft, nach einer Periode stürmischer Entwicklung zu einem neuen möglichst einheitlichen inter­ nationalen stratigraphischen System der Trias zu gelangen. Ob dieses Fernziel jemals vollkommen verwirklicht werden kann, ist ungewiß. Trotzdem muß es angestrebt werden. Das Wiener Symposium und diese Publikation sollen ein Schritt in diese Richtung sein. lIELMUTH ZAPFE 3 Preface A Symposium on the "Stratigraphy of the Alpine-Mediterranean Triassic" took place in Vienna from May 2lst until 23rd, 1973 under the aegis of the International Geological Correlation Programme. The convention was supported by the IGCP, the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Sincere gratitude is here expressed to all three institutions, and especially to the Austrian Academy of Sciences for making possible publication of this volume. The 30 papers included in this volume comprise mainly the lectures of the partici­ pants; they were partly communicated by colleagues immediately after the meeting and relate to the topic of the Symposium. Stratigraphie research on the pelagic Triassic has proceeded quickly during the last decade. Thus the principal aim of the Vienna Symposium was to present a survey of the progress of knowledge and the research position in several regions and countries. Above all this survey is intended to enable different authoritative opinions to be compared and to create a basis for further discussions. Great importance was attached to the publication of numerous synoptic descriptions for the western part of the Tethys, which­ where possible-contain clear tables of the regional Triassic stratigraphy. Furthermore, a number of contributions deal with stratigraphic correlation on the basis of ammonites and other fossil groups (e.g. micropaleontology). The stratigraphical details of particular areas are dealt with in a series of regional studies. The overall picture resulting from contributions is far from complete, but it conveys a glimpse ofthe present position in the different regions and it has also revealed numerous problems and gaps in knowledge. Now at last Triassic research in many countries is progressing. The aim of all this work is, without doubt, after a period of rapid development, to reach in the future a new hopefully unified international stratigraphic system for the Triassic. lt is uncertain if this aim can ever be achieved. Nevertheless, it is tobe strived for. The Vienna Symposium and this volume are a step in that direction. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. By 1874 and with later modi- 15–20-cm-thick limestone bed overlying a distinct fications (e.g., 1882), Mojsisovics used the name “Norian” for a strati- groove (“Chiesense groove”) of limestone nodules in a graphic interval including, at its base, the South Alpine Buchenstein Beds and siliceous limestones of Bakony (Hungary). Because Moj- shaly matrix, located about 5 m above the base of the sisovics erroneously equated this interval with parts of the ammonoid- Buchenstein Formation. Because S. senticosus was mainly distributed in the Tethyan region, its occurrence provides evidence that Late Triassic ammonoids of Japan had strong affinities with those of the Tethyan faunas. This finding clearly differs from the biogeographic distribution of contemporary bivalves in the region, which are referred to as the Kochigatani bivalve faunas, and show strong affinities to faunas of the Boreal region.
