These layers occur in Lower Oxfordian (cordatum ammonite zone) to Middle Oxfordian (plicatilis zone) clays and silty clays deposited in outer platform environments. In the Paris Basin, a thick bentonite (10–15 cm), identified in boreholes and in outcrop, is dominated by dioctahedral smectite (95%) with trace amounts of kaolinite, illite and chlorite. In contrast, five bentonites identified in the Subalpine Basin, where burial diagenesis and fluid circulation were more important, are composed of a mixture of kaolinite and regular or random illite/smectite mixed-layer clays in variable proportions, indicating a K-bentonite. In the Subalpine Basin, a 2–15 cm thick bentonite underlain by a layer affected by sulphate–carbonate mineralization can be correlated over 2000 km2. -

Mai 1973 fand in Wien im Rahmen des „International Geological Correlation Programme" (IGCP) ein Symposium. über die Stratigraphie der alpin mediterranen Trias statt. Die Finanzierung dieser Tagung erfolgte durch das IGCP, das Bundesministerium. für Wissenschaft und Forschung sowie die Österreichische Alm demie der Wissenschaften. Die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften ermöglichte vor allem die Herausgabe dieses Bandes. Allen diesen Institutionen sei an dieser Stelle der geziemende Dank ausgesprochen. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen 30 Arbeiten beinhalten vorwiegend die Vorträge der Tagungsteilnehmer, teils wurden sie auch unmittelbar im Anschluß an die Tagung von Fachkollegen zum Druck eingereicht und betreffen das Thema des Symposiums. Die stratigraphische Erforschung der pelagischen Trias ist seit dem letzten Jahrzehnt in raschem Fortschreiten begriffen. Es war deshalb das Ziel der Wiener Tagung, zunächst nur einen Überblick über den Wissensfortschritt und den Forschungsstand in den ein zelnen Regionen und Ländern zu geben. Dieser Überblick soll zunächst nur die Möglich• keit geben, die Meinungen der Fachleute verschiedener Länder zu vergleichen und eine Grundlage für weitere Diskussionen zu schaffen. Es wurde Wert darauf gelegt, für den westlichen Teil der Tethys möglichst zahlreiche zusammenfassende Darstellungen für verschiedene Länder zu veröffentlichen, die - wenn möglich - übersichtliche Tabellen der regionalen Trias-Stratigraphie enthalten. Darüber hinaus behandeln zahlreiche Arbeiten stratigraphische Gliederungen auf der Basis von Ammoniten und anderen Fossilgruppen (u. a. Mikropaläontologie). Eine Reihe regionaler Studien ist stratigraphi schen Detailfragen einzelner Gebiete gewidmet. -

The biostratigraphy consists of ammonoid and palynomorph Mark W. The magnetostratigraphy consists of 10 substantive normal— Geography, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, Bailrigg, Lancaster, LA1 reverse polarity chrons, defined by sampling at 150 stratigraphic levels. These assemblages extend the known paleogeographic range of Late Jurassic Tethyan fossil groups several hundred km to the northwest and improve correlation of Upper Jurassic strata in northern Mexico. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. INTRODUCTION Today very few ammonoid workers doubt the (e.g., conch shape, sculpture, growth lines) rep- importance of sutures as indication of ammonoid resent less complicated structures; therefore, phylogeny. The Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the Ladinian Stage (Middle Tri- Historical context of the Ladinian Stage assic) is defined in the Caffaro river bed (45°49’09.5’’N, The first formal recognition of a stratigraphic interval comprising what 10°28’15.5’’E), south of the village of Bagolino is now called Ladinian orginates from the subdivisions of the Triassic (Province of Brescia, northern Italy), at the base of a System proposed by E.v. Mojsisovics. Ammonoids served as the main biostratigraphic tool for these divisions. By 1874 and with later modi- 15–20-cm-thick limestone bed overlying a distinct fications (e.g., 1882), Mojsisovics used the name “Norian” for a strati- groove (“Chiesense groove”) of limestone nodules in a graphic interval including, at its base, the South Alpine Buchenstein Beds and siliceous limestones of Bakony (Hungary). Because Moj- shaly matrix, located about 5 m above the base of the sisovics erroneously equated this interval with parts of the ammonoid- Buchenstein Formation. The lower surface of the thick rich Hallstatt-limestones, he used the term “Norian” as the stage name, limestone bed has the lowest occurrence of the which refers to the Norian Alps around Hallstatt near Salzburg (Aus- tria). -
