Within two continuously recorded sections of sedimentary carbon- ates and interlayered pyroclastic rocks (Mali Kunovac and Kunovac sections) reflecting variable sedimentary-magmatic environments, valuable cephalopod fauna ranging from the middle Illyrian to the upper Illyrian age was found. The most significant was the recovery of the ammonoids Asseretoceras sp., indicating the upper part of the Illyrian Paraceratites trinodosus Zone, and Reitziites reitzi species which marks the upper part of the Illyrian Reitziites reitzi Zone. Mai 1973 fand in Wien im Rahmen des „International Geological Correlation Programme" (IGCP) ein Symposium. über die Stratigraphie der alpin mediterranen Trias statt. Die Finanzierung dieser Tagung erfolgte durch das IGCP, das Bundesministerium. für Wissenschaft und Forschung sowie die Österreichische Alm demie der Wissenschaften. Die Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften ermöglichte vor allem die Herausgabe dieses Bandes. Allen diesen Institutionen sei an dieser Stelle der geziemende Dank ausgesprochen. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen 30 Arbeiten beinhalten vorwiegend die Vorträge der Tagungsteilnehmer, teils wurden sie auch unmittelbar im Anschluß an die Tagung von Fachkollegen zum Druck eingereicht und betreffen das Thema des Symposiums. Die stratigraphische Erforschung der pelagischen Trias ist seit dem letzten Jahrzehnt in raschem Fortschreiten begriffen. Es war deshalb das Ziel der Wiener Tagung, zunächst nur einen Überblick über den Wissensfortschritt und den Forschungsstand in den ein zelnen Regionen und Ländern zu geben. Dieser Überblick soll zunächst nur die Möglich• keit geben, die Meinungen der Fachleute verschiedener Länder zu vergleichen und eine Grundlage für weitere Diskussionen zu schaffen. Es wurde Wert darauf gelegt, für den westlichen Teil der Tethys möglichst zahlreiche zusammenfassende Darstellungen für verschiedene Länder zu veröffentlichen, die - wenn möglich - übersichtliche Tabellen der regionalen Trias-Stratigraphie enthalten. Darüber hinaus behandeln zahlreiche Arbeiten stratigraphische Gliederungen auf der Basis von Ammoniten und anderen Fossilgruppen (u. a. Mikropaläontologie). Eine Reihe regionaler Studien ist stratigraphi schen Detailfragen einzelner Gebiete gewidmet. -

Dopo I'apertura iniziale della Neotetide nel Permiano, la subsidenza rermica conrinua nel Triassico inferiore, ceraÍterizzato da tre orizzonti condensati di carbonati pelagici, di erà Griesbachiana infe- riore-Dieneriana inferiore, Smithiana inferiore-media e Smithiana sommitale-Egeica basale, separari da argilliri nere (Formazione di Tamba Kurkur). Le strutture sedimentarie indicano un ambiente di piattaforma non molto profonda per le argille, mentre per i carbonati nodulari la ricca fauna ad Ammoniti e Conodonti suggerisce profondità massime attorno ai 150 + 200 m, raggiunte sulla piattaforma esterna durante fasi trasgressive. La Formazione di Mukut contiene marne e calcari marnosi deposti in ambienti di piattaforma dall' Anisico inferiore al Norico basale. Peliti calcaree e siltose sono più abbondanti nella parte carnica della formazione, dove i tassi di accumulo in rapido aumento suggeriscono una nuova fase tettonica estensiva. La potente Formazione di Tarap, anribuibile in gran parte alla parte centrale del Norico, è costituita da una fitta alternanza di peliti scure e di subarkose a grana fine ("membro inferiore"), seguite localmente da patch-reefs a Coralli ("membro centrale") e quindi da peliti intercalate ad areniti ibride spesso conrenenti chamosite e deposte durante eventi trasgressivi ("membro superiore"). La successione Triassica termina con quarzareniti ibride e subarkose alternate con peliti e calcari ("Quartzite Series"), seguite da carbonati di piattaforma (Calcari di Kioto). -

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. Because Moj- shaly matrix, located about 5 m above the base of the sisovics erroneously equated this interval with parts of the ammonoid- Buchenstein Formation. The Mesozoic of Afghanistan
GeoArabia, vol. 14, no. 1, 2009, p. 147-210 Gulf PetroLink, Bahrain The Mesozoic of Afghanistan Christian Montenat ABSTRACT This paper is a review of the geology of the widely distributed Mesozoic rocks of Afghanistan. The country is a mosaic of structural blocks in a variety of geodynamic settings that were juxtaposed during the evolution of the Tethyan Ocean; the Mesozoic sedimentary, volcanic, and plutonic rocks therefore differ greatly from one block to another. Because of the adverse security situation, fieldwork has not been possible since the late 1970s and the data used in this review are therefore relatively old but are the best available. Interest in the geology of Afghanistan remains strong due to its position between the mountain chains of the Middle East and the collisional ranges of the Pamirs and Himalayas. A special feature of Tethyan geodynamics is the presence of Cimmerian (latest Triassic to earliest Cretaceous) continental blocks, microcontinents, or terranes located between the Eurasian and Indian landmasses. They are fragments of Gondwana inserted between the Paleo- and Neo-Tethys during the Mesozoic. This complex part of the Tethyan realm is well exposed in Afghanistan where the effects of the Indo- Eurasian collision were less intense than in regions of frontal collision, such as the Pamir and Himalayan ranges. It is for this reason that Afghanistan is of particular geodynamic interest and a key region in the understanding of the genesis and evolution of the Tethyan system during the Mesozoic. INTRODUCTION At the beginning of the 1960s, knowledge of the geology of Afghanistan (Figure 1) was based principally on the results of a few remarkable pioneers (Griesbach, 1885, 1886; Hayden, 1911, and later, Furon, 1927).
