Article The Korean Wave in the Middle East: Past and Present Mohamed Elaskary Department of Arabic Interpretation, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Seoul 17035, South Korea; [email protected]; Tel. +821054312809 Received: 01 October 2018; Accepted: 22 October 2018; Published: 25 October 2018 Abstract: The Korean Wave—otherwise known as Hallyu or Neo-Hallyu—has a particularly strong influence on the Middle East but scholarly attention has not reflected this occurrence. In this article I provide a brief history of Hallyu, noting its mix of cultural and economic characteristics, and then analyse the reception of the phenomenon in the Arab Middle East by considering fan activity on social media platforms. I then conclude by discussing the cultural, political and economic benefits of Hallyu to Korea and indeed the wider world. For the sake of convenience, I will be using the term Hallyu (or Neo-Hallyu) rather than the Korean Wave throughout my paper. Introduction My first encounter with Korean culture was in 2010 when I was invited to present a paper at a conference on the Korean Wave that was held in Seoul in October 2010. In that presentation, I highlighted that Korean drama had been well received in the Arab world because most Korean drama themes (social, historical and familial) appeal to Arab viewers. In addition, the lack of nudity in these dramas as opposed to that of Western dramas made them more appealing to Arab viewers. The number of research papers and books focused on Hallyu at that time was minimal. -

Il s’agit de la première exposition de webtoons organisée conjointement par le Centre Culturel Coréen et la Korea Manhwa Contents Agency (KOMACON). © Korea Manhwa Contents Agency (KOMACON) Le terme « Webtoon » - combinaison des mots « web » et « toon » (cartoon) -, désigne la bande dessinée numérique diffusée sur le net. Il y a actuellement en Corée 59 plateformes avec 3183 auteurs de BD et 9148 différents cartoons disponibles. Les webtoons sont accessibles depuis un mobile et peuvent être regardés quel que soit le lieu où on se trouve : dans le métro, dans le bus, dans la rue… C’est certainement cette grande accessibilité qui explique le véritable « boom », ces dernières années, de ce nouveau type de bande dessinée en Corée. L’exposition « Webtoon, Spécial PyeongChang », outre l’objectif d’aborder le thème des J.O. d’hiver, permettra de faire découvrir aux visiteurs du Centre Culturel le potentiel à la fois technologique et créatif des webtoons coréens. Scindé en deux grandes parties avec une zone 1 « webtoon » d’un côté et une zone « J.O. de PyeongChang à travers les manhwas » de l’autre, l’espace d’exposition abordera chacun des deux thèmes sous un éclairage différent. Dans la zone « webtoon », on pourra découvrir l’histoire des BD coréennes en ligne, ainsi qu’une présentation des plateformes de diffusion disponible en France et aux États-Unis, telles que Delitoon, Line Webtoon, Lezhin Comics, Tapas Media, TappyToon, etc. -

(Signature, Date) Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis about the growing popularity of Korean pop music (K-pop) worldwide in recent years. On one hand, the international expansion of K-pop can be understood as a result of the strategic planning and business execution that are created and carried out by the entertainment agencies. On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. PEST analysis is applied to identify critical macro-environmental factors including political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological. -

The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Comparative Connections A Quarterly E-Journal on East Asian Bilateral Relations Japan-Korea Relations: Treading Water, Little Progress David Kang, Dartmouth College Ji-Young Lee, Georgetown University Although progress was made in resolving the Banco Delta Asia dispute between North Korea and the United States, and international inspectors were invited back into North Korea in June, relations between Japan and North Korea remain deadlocked, with no apparent progress or even political will to address the deep issues that divide them. Seoul and Tokyo made little progress on their history issues. However, the meeting of the foreign ministers of China, Japan, and South Korea this quarter was a positive step, and with elections coming up in Japan and South Korea, the prospect of further foreign policy changes appears likely. Japan-North Korea relations: not very good This quarter saw little movement in the stalemate between Japan and North Korea, as neither Tokyo nor Pyongyang has shown any political will to move forward toward normalizing their bilateral diplomatic relations or addressing the issues between them. North Korea announced that it saw no prospect for better relations between the two nations under the current government unless Japan changed its attitude toward key bilateral disputes. The centrality of the abduction issue in Japanese foreign policy and high political value that Prime Minister Abe Shinzo has placed on the abductions meant that Japan could not readily welcome the progress made in the Six-Party Talks. Like past quarter, Japan continued its unilateral sanctions against Pyongyang, even as its diplomatic efforts to link progress on the abduction issue with progress in stopping the North’s nuclear program gained little support from other parties in the negotiations. -

Students who were not interested in EFL have suddenly become avid readers ...students get hooked and read [a] whole series within days. (E. Kane, personal communication, January 17, 2007) For Americans, it may be difficult to comprehend the prominence of manga, or comic books, East Asia.1. Most East Asian nations both produce their own comics and publish translated Japanese manga, so Japanese publications are popular across the region and beyond. Japan is well-known as a highly literate society; what is less well-known is the role that manga plays in Japanese text consumption (Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco). 37% of all publications sold in Japan are manga of one form or another, including monthly magazines, collections, etc. (Japan External Trade Organization [JETRO], 2006). Although Japan has less than half the population of the United States, manga in all formats amounted to sales within Japan of around 4 billion dollars in 2005 (JETRO, 2006). This total is about seven times the United States' 2005 total comic book, manga, and graphic novel sales of 565 million dollars (Publisher's Weekly, 2007a, 2007b). Additionally, manga is closely connected to the Japanese animation industry, as most anime2 television series and films are based on manga; manga also provides inspiration for Japan's thriving video game industry.
