BOURBON HAS BEEN DISTILLED SINCE THE 18TH CENTURY. THE USE OF THE TERM “BOURBON” FOR THE WHISKEY HAS BEEN TRACED TO THE 1820’S, AND THE TERM BEGAN TO BE USED CONSISTENTLY IN KENTUCKY IN THE 1870’S 6 1792 RIDGEMONT - 14 THE “1792” ELEMENT OF THE NAME PAYS HOMAGE TO THE YEAR IN WHICH KENTUCKY BECAME A STATE. WHEN THIS BOURBON WAS INTRODUCED TO THE MARKET IN 2004, IT WAS INITIALLY CALLED RIDGEWOOD RESERVE BUT, AFTER LITIGATIONS BETWEEN THE DISTILLERS AND WOODFORD RESERVE’S OWNERS BROWN-FORMAN, THE NAME WAS CHANGED. BAKER’S - 17 NAMED AFTER BAKER BEAM, GRAND NEPHEW OF THE LEGENDARY JIM BEAM. EMBRACING OVER SIX GENERATIONS OF DISTILLING EXPERIENCE, BAKER’S BOURBON UTILIZES A SPECIAL STRAIN OF JUG YEAST THAT HAS BEEN IN THE FAMILY FOR OVER 60 YEARS. BASIL HAYDEN’S - 16 MASTER DISTILLER BASIL HAYDEN SR. CREATED A RECIPE IN 1796, USING A TRADITIONAL CORN BASE, BUT MIXING IN SMALL GRAINS TO HIS MASH CAPTURING THE SPICY FLAVOR OF RYE AND COMPLEMENTING THE SWEET SMOOTHNESS OF CORN. BLANTON’S - 20 TAKEN FROM THE CENTER-CUT OR MIDDLE SECTIONS OF THE FAMOUS WAREHOUSE H, BLANTON’S ORIGINAL WAS ONCE DESIGNATED FOR AMBASSADORS, DIGNITARIES, AND COLONEL BLANTON’S FAMILY AND FRIENDS. BELLE MEADE SINGLE BARREL - 20 BELLE MEADE SINGLE BARREL BOURBON IS SELECTED THROUGH A TASTING PROCESS IN WHICH A TEAM OF THEIR STAFF MEMBERS SCRUTINIZES SAMPLES FROM A GROUP OF BARRELS AGE NINE OR MORE YEARS IN SEARCH OF BARRELS WITH A SUPERIOR FLAVOR PROFILE WORTHY OF BEING BOTTLED AS A SINGLE BARREL. TO PASS MUSTER THE BARREL MUST SHOW THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT ARE THE HALLMARKS OF A SUPERIOR WELL-AGED BOURBON; BALANCE, DEPTH, AND COMPLEXITY. 7 BELLE MEADE SHERRY CASK - 20 THEIR NINE YEAR-OLD BELLE MEADE BOURBON FINISHED IN OLOROSO SHERRY CASKS, IS THEIR FIRST WOOD FINISH SERIES RELEASE, REPRESENTS THE BEST OF BOTH OLD AND NEW WORLD WHISKEY MAKING TECHNIQUES AS IT’S AMERICA’S NATIVE SPIRIT, BOURBON, THAT THEY HAVE BLENDED AND FINISHED LIKE A FINE SCOTCH. BOOKER’S - 18 ONE OF THE ONLY UNCUT, UNFILTERED, STRAIGHT-FROM-THE-BARREL, BOURBONS AVAILABLE TODAY. IT’S BOTTLED AT ITS NATURAL PROOF OF BETWEEN 121 AND 127, AND AGED BETWEEN SIX AND EIGHT YEARS. BUFFALO TRACE - 12 THE OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING DISTILLERY IN AMERICA DURING PROHIBITION THE DISTILLERY WAS EVEN PERMITTED TO REMAIN OPERATIONAL, TO MAKE WHISKEY FOR “MEDICINAL PURPOSES”. BULLEIT - 13 IN THE 1830S, AS A TAVERN KEEPER IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, AUGUSTUS BULLEIT SET HIMSELF ON A MISSION: TO CREATE A BOURBON UNIQUE IN FLAVOR. BULLEIT 10 YR - 18 THIS IS TOM BULLEIT’S SELECTED RESERVE. AGED IN CHARRED AMERICAN WHITE OAK, SELECT BULLEIT BOURBON BARRELS WERE SET ASIDE TO AGE FOR 10 YEARS. THE RESULT IS A SPECIAL EXPRESSION OF BULLEIT THAT PROVIDES A RICH, DEEP, INCREDIBLY SMOOTH SIPPING EXPERIENCE. DEEP RUSSET IN COLOR, WITH RICH OAKY AROMAS. CONSISTENTLY SMOOTH, WITH HINTS OF VANILLA, DRIED FRUIT, AND A LONG, SMOKY FINISH EAGLE RARE 10YR - 13 THE WHISKEY FROM EACH AGING BARREL IS BOTTLED INDIVIDUALLY, NONE OF IT IS BLENDED CREATING A UNIQUE FLAVOR FOR EACH BARREL. E.H. TAYLOR SMALL BATCH - 15 AS FOUNDING FATHER OF THE BOURBON INDUSTRY, COLONEL EDMUND HAYNES TAYLOR, JR. LEFT AN INDELIBLE LEGACY. HIS DEDICATION TO DISTILLING BEGAN AT THE CLOSE OF THE CIVIL WAR WHEN HE PURCHASED O.F C. DISTILLERY. THERE, HE DEVELOPED INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES THAT ARE STILL IN USE TODAY. 8 E.H. TAYLOR SINGLE BARREL - 21 COLONEL EDMUND HAYNES TAYLOR, JR. ELIJAH CRAIG SMALL BATCH - 13 LONG BEFORE THE TERM SMALL BATCH EVEN EXISTED, THE MASTER DISTILLERS WERE HAND-SELECTING JUST THE RIGHT NUMBER OF BARRELS TO MAKE ELIJAH CRAIG. THIS EXPERTISE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL GIVE ELIJAH CRAIG SMALL BATCH THE RIGHT BALANCE OF RICH FLAVOR AND FULL BODY. EVAN WILLIAMS SINGLE BARREL - 13 REALIZING THE POTENTIAL OF WHISKEY, EVAN WILLIAMS SET UP HIS DISTILLERY ON THE BANKS OF THE OHIO RIVER. • 90Th ANNIVERSARY of SUNTORY WHISKY
Press kit 90th Anniversary *L’art japonais du whisky depuis 1923 th 90 ANNIVERSARY OF SUNTORY WHISKY e Art of Japanese Whisky, an art of heritage and innovation On the road to its centennial, the House of Suntory Whisky marks its 90th anniversary of whisky making. Inspired by heritage and innovation, this richly experienced House dared to make Japanese Whisky a reality by tirelessly reinventing whisky to create a true form of art. It has been 90 years since founding father, Shinjiro Torii, built the first whisky distillery in Yamazaki, Japan in 1923, where this new “art of whisky making” was born. In 2012, Japanese whisky made another global breakthrough with Suntory being named Distiller of the Year for the third time in three years. For the past year, the global progress of Suntory Whisky has been nothing less than outstanding. To highlight, global shipments of e Yamazaki increased by 24% while e Hakushu increased by a remarkable 187%. None of this success has happened by chance. The same meticulous effort will be present throughout all of the ambitious projects to come in 2013. 1923 - 2013 Suntory Whisky, a legacy of three generations of innovators It all began with a man who dreamed of making a true Japanese Whisky to complement the Japanese palate. The visionary, Shinjiro Torii, established Japan’s first distillery in Yamazaki on the periphery of Kyoto. The quest was then handed to his son, Keizo Saji, who sought to create a unique taste and establish a second distillery in Hakushu, located deep within the forest of Japan’s Southern Alps.

  • Before Johnny Walker Black Label and Chivas Regal Took the Indian
Before Johnny Walker Black Label and Chivas Regal took the Indian whisky market by storm there was a malt whisky being produced in India for quite some time, since 1855 in fact! Also this distillery is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas!! The brewing, distillation and maturation processes followed at the distillery are very similar to that of Scotch whisky. Yes I am referring to Mohan “Meakin’s Solan No 1”. The distillery is situated in Kasauli, a small town in Solan district in the state of Himachal Pradesh. So if you are one of those who believe that water plays a major role in the outcome of the distilled spirit then this location has perhaps some of the best streams of fresh water in the world. Pic. (1)Location of Solan district, 65 Kms from Chandigarh Now we are not talking about one of the multiple dubious whiskies produced in India, this one is a “legitimate” whisky even by Scottish standards! In fact this was considered the “only whisky” produced in India for a very long time, as this is a “Malt” whisky produced from barley unlike most other whiskies produced in India which use molasses. This distillery is well known for the “OLD MONK” rum, which most readers from the subcontinent will be familiar with. Till recently I had a misconception that it was a single malt whisky, which is what Wikipedia also states (have submitted a correction) but a little more research/ observation has shown me that this is a blended malt whisky. Pic. (2)Solan No 1 Bottle So why am I drinking this and writing about it? And most importantly what has Bangalore got to do with this?? Solan number 1 was one of the most popular whisky back in the 80’s and largely supplied its products to the defense services of India.

Wolburg Department of Advertising and Public Relations, Diederich College of Communication, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI Olesya Venger Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA Abstract: Using text analysis, this study compares the alcohol advertising strategy in Ukraine and the United States within the context of regulatory, historical, cultural, and economic factors. Results showed that Ukrainian magazine ads contained a larger number of violations than the American ads, which complied with the letter of the law, if not the spirit. The message strategies also told different cultural stories that reflect the different ideologies for the two countries, which means that specialized advertising approaches are needed for each country. American ads situate alcohol as part of normal life, whereas Ukrainian ads demonstrate conspicuous consumption and celebrate the change to a market economy. They must not only sell the product but also teach Ukrainians how to be part of the consumer culture. An ad for Beefeater Dry Gin in GQ magazine shows the bottle of gin with slices of lime making a splash pattern against the tonic water in the shape of the British flag.

However, there are other, smaller producers with huge fan bases, wonderful products, and impressive award portfolios operating in the land of the rising sun. Large and small, here are the more established Japanese producers you should look out for. Photographer: Akio Kon/ Bloomberg. Photo: Â © 2013 Bloomberg Finance LP Â © 2013 Bloomberg Finance LP Suntory - Yamazaki, Hakushu, & Chita These distilleries are all owned by Suntory, and each was created to expand the range of flavours in Suntory’s whiskies. For this reason, each distillery was built in areas with different humidity level and altitudes, which are both factors that greatly affect the maturation, and so, final flavour profile of a whisky. 1/6 The Yamazaki distillery is located just outside Kyoto and is Japan’s most popular distillery. Its expressions are also the most awarded worldwide. Hakushu, also known as the forest distillery, creates smokier, more floral whiskies, while the Chita distillery is the company’s dedicated grain whisky distillery, creating grain whiskies that are either bottled or used in Suntory’s blended whiskies. The famed Hibiki whisky range is created from spirit from all three sites. For a perfect entry into Suntory’s wonderful whisky range we recommend you try: Yamazaki Single Malt 12-Year-Old Hibiki Harmony Hakushu Single Malt Nikka - Yoichi & Miyagikyo Nikka has two active whisky making plants, the Yoichi and the Miyagikyo distilleries.

  • How Japanese Whisky Became the World's Best
How Japanese Whisky Became the World’s Best vogue.com/article/how-japanese-whisky-became-the-worlds-best 1/5 2/5 Tasting Room at Suntory Yamazaki distillery Photo: Alamy In the eyes of many spirits fans, Scotch is to fine whisky as Champagne is to fine wine—the indisputable best. Yet over the last few years, whisky connoisseurs have become increasingly enamored with whiskies from Japan, many of them similar to single-malt Scotches in their methods and composition, but with a character all their own. The history of whisky in Japan stretches back a century, and does find its roots in Scotch, in particular. Its pioneer, a Japanese man by the name of Masataka Taketsuru, journeyed to Scotland in 1918 to learn the trade. After apprenticing at three distilleries, he returned to Japan as the master distiller for the Suntory company in 1923, eventually beginning distillation in his own enterprise, which would come to be called Nikka, in 1936. (Today, Nikka and Suntory remain the two major names in the industry.) But decades elapsed before the spirit took off. In the United States, the demand for Japanese whisky kicked off when certain prized bottles began to earn international acclaim. In 2001, Whisky Magazine honored Nikka’s 10-Year Yoichi as its “Best of the Best.” Other awards ensued, and the spirit drew greater attention still when Suntory’s Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013, remarkably, beat out all other nations and was named the world’s best whisky by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible in 2015.
