1 Central Songbook July 29, 2017 This file contains all of the lyrics to all of the songs currently sung regularly in the morning services at Central Presbyterian Church. Many other songs for worship (both new and old) are also included. The hyperlinks lead to audio files suitable for learning the tune of each song. Those marked “tune only” link to an instrumental accompaniment (usually in the style of a four-part arrangement for piano or organ). Other links connect to recordings of vocalists singing the song. The specific musical arrangements and the manner of performance in these recordings (e.g., tempo) do not necessarily indicate the arrangements or manner in which a song would be sung at Central Presbyterian Church. The links are provided for purposes of teaching and learning the basic melody of the song. The texts for many older hymns exist in multiple different versions because hymnal editors have altered the texts. In the Central Songbook, the variations for hymns with differing texts have been compared with one another. Modern language updates have been chosen wherever these changes do not eliminate or distort important biblical allusions, theological concepts, or literary features of the text too greatly. Other selection criteria include biblical-theological depth and accuracy and ease of use in congregational singing. (If you want to sing another variant of the text included in the Central Songbook, download the Microsoft Word document form of this file and edit the file for your own use accordingly.) This songbook will grow and develop as new songs are added to and/or removed from Central’s repertoire. Anyone who is interested in acquiring the music for these songs in any format should contact pastor Mike Farley ([email protected]). CCLI License #100150 2 10,000 Reasons Text and tune: Jonas Myrin and Matt Redman, 2011 © 2011, Thankyou Music/Said and Done Music/Sixsteps Music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXDGE_lRI0E REFRAIN Bless the Lord, O my soul; O my soul, worship his holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul I'll worship your holy name. The sun comes up, it's a new day dawning. It's time to sing your song again. Whatever may pass, and whatever lies before me let me be singing when the evening comes. REFRAIN You're rich in love, and you're slow to anger. Your name is great, and your heart is kind. For all your goodness I will keep on singing, ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come. Still my soul will sing your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore. REFRAIN (2x) 3 A Debtor to Mercy Alone Text: Augustus Toplady, 1771 Tune: Sherdonna Denholm, 2009; © 2009, Sherdonna Denholm https://www.dropbox.com/s/en9al3cd5sjw59n/A%20Debtor%20To%20Mercy%20Alone.mp3?dl=0 1. A debtor to mercy alone, of covenant mercy I sing, nor fear, with thy righteousness on, my person and off'ring to bring. The terrors of law and of God with me can have nothing to do. My Saviour's obedience and blood hide all my transgressions from view. 2. The work which his goodness began, the arm of his strength will complete. His promise is Yea and Amen, and never was forfeited yet. Things future, nor things that are now, nor all things below or above, can make him his purpose forgo or sever my soul from his love. 3. My name from the palms of his hands eternity will not erase. Impressed on his heart it remains, In marks of indelible grace. Yes, I to the end shall endure, as sure as the earnest is giv'n, more happy, but not more secure, the glorified spirits in heav'n. 4 A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing Text: Bede, 673-735; tr. A hymn of glory let us sing; new songs throughout the world shall ring: Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ, by a road before untrod, ascends unto the throne of God. REFRAIN Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 2. The holy apostolic band upon the Mount of Olives stand; Alleluia! Alleluia! And with his faithful foll’wers see their Lord ascend in majesty. REFRAIN 3. To them the shining angels cry, “Why stand and gaze upon the sky? Alleluia! Alleluia! “This is the Savior,” thus they say; “This is his glorious triumph day!” REFRAIN 4. “You see him now, ascending high up to the portals of the sky.” Alleluia! Alleluia! “Hereafter Jesus you shall see returning in great majesty.” REFRAIN 5. Be now our joy on earth, O Lord, and be our future great reward. Alleluia! Alleluia! Then, throned with you forever, we shall praise your name eternally. REFRAIN 6. O risen Christ, ascended Lord, all praise to you let earth accord: Alleluia! Alleluia! You are, while endless ages run, with Father and with Spirit one. REFRAIN 5 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Text: Martin Luther, 1529; tr. Frederick Hedge, 1853 Tune: Martin Luther, 1529; harm. Johann S. Bach, 1685-1750 EIN FESTE BURG (isorhythmic) http://www.hymnary.org/media/fetch/136741 (tune only) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0NUslfW-w8 (classical) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY4DCG-nFBI (contemporary) 8.7.8.7.6.6.6.6.7 1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and pow’r are great; and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he, Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4. That Word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever. 6 Abide with Me Text: Henry F. Lyte, 1847 Tune: Justin Smith, 2007; © 2007, Justin Smith Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yffl9qDN2Y 1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, help of the helpless, abide with me. 2. Thou on my head, in early youth didst smile, and, though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile, thou hast not left me, oft as I left thee. On to the close Lord, abide with me. 3. I need thy presence, every passing hour. What but thy grace, can foil the tempter’s power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me. 4. I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless. Ills have no weight; tears lose their bitterness. Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still; abide with me. 5. Hold thou thy cross, before my closing eyes. Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies. Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee. In life, in death, Lord, abide with me. 7 Abiding City Text and tune: Sandra Mccracken © 2005 Same Old Dress Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm6jZ7yIRgc O sweet home of love and peace where pilgrims tired and troubled rest, into the hope of Zion lean where in Jesus’ arms we will fall at last. Addiction’s empty promises this broken world just can’t satisfy. A sweeter song, redemption’s bliss is sealed for us in paradise. REFRAIN O lift up your head for the day is near. We have no abiding city here. Spirit, heal our neighborhood until your kingdom work is done. Teach us what is just and good as we look for the city that’s yet to come. REFRAIN A city filled with gold and light, God the builder and the architect, when our faith is turned to sight, O I cannot imagine it. REFRAIN 8 Advent/Christmas Doxology Tune: Traditional French melody; harm. Edward S. Barnes, 1937 GLORIA http://www.hymnary.org/media/fetch/148402 (tune only) 7.7.7.7 ref. Praise the Lord, the coming King. All his saints, his glory sing. Praise God all you heavenly host, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo! 9 Ah, Holy Jesus Text: Johann Heermann, 1630; tr. Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, that man to judge thee hath in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted. 2.
