Third Sunday in Lent 3rd SUNDAY after PENTECOST Chorus Amen, Amen I'm alive, I'm alive June 13, 2021 Because He lives Amen, Amen 10:30 am Let my song join the one that never ends Because He lives Bridge Zion Lutheran Church I can face tomorrow Because He lives 1400 South Duluth Avenue Every fear is gone I know He holds my life my future in His hands Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57105 End Chorus www.zlcsf.org zlc Sioux Falls Amen, Amen I'm alive, I'm alive Because He lives Amen, Amen Let my song join the one that never ends AS WE GATHER Amen, Amen I'm alive, I'm alive Because He lives Amen, Amen The parables of our Lord convey the mysteries of the kingdom of God to those who are Let my song join the one that never ends “able to hear it,” that is, “to his own disciples,” who are catechized to fear, love and Because He lives Because He lives trust in Him by faith (Mark 4:33–34). He scatters “seed on the ground,” which “sprouts and grows” unto life, even as “he sleeps and rises” (Mark 4:26–27). “On the mountain height of Israel,” He plants a young and tender twig, and it becomes “a noble cedar.” WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Indeed, His own cross becomes the Tree of Life, under which “every kind of bird” will dwell, and in which “birds of every sort will nest” (Ezek. 17:22–25). His cross is our resting place, even while now in mortal bodies, we “groan, being burdened” (2 MINUTE FOR MINISTRY – Chez Shoup Corinthians 5:1–4). Yet in faith, we live for God in Christ, who for our sake “died and was raised” (2 Corinthians 5:15). We know that, in His resurrected body, “we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 INVOCATION Corinthians 5:1). Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. OPENING PRAISE SONG: “Because He Lives” Matt Maher PRAYER OF CONFESSION Verse 1 I believe in the Son I believe in the risen One Pastor: Let us draw near to God our Father with a true heart to confess our sins and ask I believe I overcome By the power of His blood him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. Chorus People: Merciful God, our Maker and our Judge, We have sinned against you in Amen, Amen I'm alive, I'm alive Because He lives Amen, Amen thought, word and deed: We have not loved you with our whole heart, We have Let my song join the one that never ends Because He lives not loved our neighbors as ourselves; We repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Verse 2 Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; Through I was dead in the grave I was covered in sin and shame Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. I heard mercy call my name He rolled the stone away Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake TIME IN THE WORD forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son CHILDREN’S BIBLE READING: Page 270 and of the Holy Spirit. People: Thanks be to God. Amen. First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22–24 PRAISE SONG: “Living Hope” Brian Johnson | Phil Wickham “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it Verse 1 on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will How great the chasm that lay between us How high the mountain I could not climb produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will In desperation I turned to heaven And spoke Your name into the night nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches. All the trees of the forest will know that I the Lord bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness Tore through the shadows of my soul up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. “‘I the Lord have spoken, and I will do The work is finished the end is written Jesus Christ my living hope it.’” Verse 2 Who could imagine so great a mercy What heart could fathom such boundless grace Here ends the Reading. The God of ages stepped down from glory To wear my sin and bear my shame The cross has spoken I am forgiven The King of kings calls me His own Epistle Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1–10 Beautiful Savior, I’m Yours forever Jesus Christ my living hope Chorus For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from Hallelujah praise the One who set me free Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, You have broken every chain There’s salvation in Your name longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are Jesus Christ my living hope clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are Verse 3 burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our Then came the morning that sealed the promise Your buried body began to breathe heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now the one Out of the silence the Roaring Lion Declared the grave has no claim on me who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a Jesus Yours is the victory deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know Chorus that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by Hallelujah praise the One who set me free Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body You have broken every chain There’s salvation in Your name and at home with the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at Jesus Christ my living hope home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of (Repeat Chorus) Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the Ending body, whether good or bad. Jesus Christ my living hope Oh God You are my living hope Here ends the Reading. the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven Please rise out of respect for the words and ministry of Jesus Christ. and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. The Holy Gospel: Mark 4:26–34 And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead to it, because the harvest has come.” Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of and the life of the world to come. Amen. God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” With OFFERING ANNOUNCEMENT many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Here ends the Reading. THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy CHILDREN’S MESSAGE will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom and the MESSAGE power and the glory forever and ever.

I believe they contain no blunders, and they are as good as I can make them ; but my aim is practical, namely, to teach those who know little about verses how they may learn more. In games we often learn more from those who are just good enough to beat us, than we could learn from professional players ; and so I trust that if these verses are only a little better than the learner can make, he will learn from them none the less. What is here printed is the substance of composition lectures which I have been in the habit of giving for the last ten or twelve years.

  • Message in the Music 5/6 Trapped by the Flames and Smoke in His Second-Story Bedroom
    b. Meet This Message i. “All My Hope” is a prodigal story reminding us that we all stray away from God and He still welcomes us back with open arms when we come back to Him! ii. Think about “hope” for a moment. 1. When I say hope, are you thinking “I hope everything thing is okay”? “Hope” = wishful thinking/Disney dreaming? 2. No! Hope = faith / belief / confidence! (pic of burning house on screen) It’s like that story of a family was awakened by their smoke detector in the middle of the night to discover that their house was on fire. The father ran into the upstairs bedroom of his children and carried his eighteen-month-old baby in his arms while dragging his four-year-old son by the hand. They were halfway down the stairs when the little boy remembered that he had left his teddy bear in the bedroom, so he broke free from his father’s hand and ran back to the bedroom to retrieve it. In the furor and confusion, the father didn’t notice that his son wasn’t with him until he got outside. By now the little boy was Message in the Music 5/6 trapped by the flames and smoke in his second-story bedroom. Smoke swirled First Baptist Student Ministry - Wednesday, August 1, 2018 around him and he coughed and cried out from the upstairs window, “Daddy, Daddy! Help me!” Intro Video = “Message In The Music 2018 Intro” (0:12) His father yelled from below, “Jump out of the window, Andy! I’ll catch you!” In the darkness and smoke, the little boy yelled back, “But Daddy! I can’t see you!” Tonight we will conclude this summer’s Message In The Music series in a unique Daddy shouted back, “That’s okay, son.

  • Central Songbook
1 Central Songbook July 29, 2017 This file contains all of the lyrics to all of the songs currently sung regularly in the morning services at Central Presbyterian Church. Many other songs for worship (both new and old) are also included. The hyperlinks lead to audio files suitable for learning the tune of each song. Those marked “tune only” link to an instrumental accompaniment (usually in the style of a four-part arrangement for piano or organ). Other links connect to recordings of vocalists singing the song. The specific musical arrangements and the manner of performance in these recordings (e.g., tempo) do not necessarily indicate the arrangements or manner in which a song would be sung at Central Presbyterian Church. The links are provided for purposes of teaching and learning the basic melody of the song. The texts for many older hymns exist in multiple different versions because hymnal editors have altered the texts. In the Central Songbook, the variations for hymns with differing texts have been compared with one another. Modern language updates have been chosen wherever these changes do not eliminate or distort important biblical allusions, theological concepts, or literary features of the text too greatly. Other selection criteria include biblical-theological depth and accuracy and ease of use in congregational singing. (If you want to sing another variant of the text included in the Central Songbook, download the Microsoft Word document form of this file and edit the file for your own use accordingly.) This songbook will grow and develop as new songs are added to and/or removed from Central’s repertoire.

  • 'It's All About Jesus'
EQ 81.3 (2009), 254–268 ‘It’s all about Jesus’: a critical analysis of the ways in which the songs of four contemporary worship Christian songwriters can lead to an impoverished christology Andrew Goodliff Andy Goodliff is training for Baptist ministry and completing an MTh at Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford KEY WORDS: christology, worship, songs, Jesus, trinity, priestly office, prophetic office The last fifteen years have seen the rise of a new group of young prolific Chris- tian songwriters whose worship songs have found a global audience, particu- larly in the UK where they all live.1 Three of the songwriters – Matt Redman, Tim Hughes and Martyn Layzell, have close links with the Christian youth organisa- tion Soul Survivor and its erstwhile parent New Wine; while one – Paul Oakley, has links with New Frontiers. Soul Survivor, New Wine and New Frontiers are all expressions of charismatic Christianity. New Wine and Soul Survivor grew out of the relationship between David Pytches (then minister at St. Andrew’s Chorley- wood) and John Wimber, the then leader and founder of Vineyard.2 The values of Vineyard, its emphasis on worship and signs and wonders are evident in both New Wine and Soul Survivor.3 New Frontiers emerged out of the house-church movement of the 1970s under the leadership of Terry Virgo.4 It was also influ- enced by John Wimber and Vineyard, and is shaped by a Calvinistic theology.5 1 This article is only able to look at four Christian songwriters. The four in this study were chosen because of their connection to worship aimed at young people (that is, those who are predominantly in their teens and twenties), which they pioneered from the mid-1990s onwards.
