High Line Pocket Guide

Pocket Guide 2019 – 2020 A Milestone Year

Twenty years ago we reimagined a rail structure as a new public space. Ten years ago we welcomed our first visitors and became a landmark of the city and a model for infrastructure reuse across the globe. This year we open the Spur and the Plinth. What’s next?

Photo: Phil Vachon Introducing: the Spur

In 2008, we initiated the Save the Spur community advocacy campaign to save this last section of the original High Line. After over a decade of grassroots organization, community sweat, meetings with government officials, design, and construction, we’re now celebrating the Spur’s opening. The Spur provides space for more public programming, restrooms, access points, food, art, and plants.

Wild-Inspired The High Line’s aesthetic reflects natural cycles of life and death, Gardens and evokes the self-seeded landscape that grew for 25 years on the neglected rail tracks. These are four-season gardens, with each season showcasing a unique cycle of the plants—as Planting Designer Piet Oudolf says, “Brown is a color also.”
