They’re just three of 12 sculptures proposed by 12 artists and vying to inaugurate what will be the industrial park’s first space dedicated specifically to art: the High Line Plinth. If that name sounds familiar, you’re likely thinking of London’s Fourth Plinth, the prominent pedestal in Trafalgar Square that’s currently home to a colossal thumb by David Shrigley. Friends of the High Line drew inspiration directly from that 176-year-old plinth for this endeavor, which is forthcoming in the spring of 2018. The nonprofit conservancy already has an impressive history of promoting culture through High Line Art, which has placed a variety of exhibitions, commissions, and performances all along the park’s tracks, but the new plinth will establish a spot specifically for contemporary art. It will serve the same purpose as its pal across the pond, hosting a series of works by international artists on an 18-month rotating schedule — and yes, you can expect them all to be rather grand in scale, as conspicuous as the ones that have towered over the British square. -

Bird Friendly Building Design & Construction Requirements Guidance document LOCAL LAW 15 OF 2020 NOVEMBER 2020 ● VERSION 1.0 BACKGROUND The Bird Friendly Building Design and Construction Requirements Guidance Document provides useful terms and associated commentary, elaborates on design and construction requirements as it applies to bird hazard installations and provides figures, pictures and commentary to assist the designer, building owner and glazing manufacturer in understanding where bird friendly materials are required to be installed, how to verify a threat factor for a glazing assembly as well as how to obtain a threat factor for an assembly that has not yet been evaluated. This Guidance Document was developed through a collaborative approach between the department and members of the design, manufacturing, development and bird conservancy community. I. INTRODUCTION The New York City Council adopted Local Law 15 of 2020, which requires that materials that reduce bird strike fatalities be installed on newly constructed or altered buildings. The Local Law, effective January 10, 2021,amends the New York City Administrative Code (AC) and the New York City Building Code (BC) to mandate the use of bird friendly materials in exterior walls, balconies, parapets, and other similar locations. Projects filed on or after January 10, 2021, will be required to use bird-friendly materials in all new buildings, and where alterations of buildings include the replacement of all exterior glazing. Local Law 15 of 2020 also requires that DOB post on its website requirements and information about compliance with NYC Building Code Section 1403.8 regarding the use of bird friendly building design and construction materials. -

Hawaii’s Aloha Spirit Begins on Oahu Island Hawaii Honolulu and Island of Oahu – Images by Lee Foster by Lee Foster When the plane touches down in Hawaii, the magic of the eight major Islands in the Hawaiian group begins to infuse the sensibility of a traveler. First of all, a traveler from North America has just made a long voyage, 2,000 miles and fully five hours from western U.S. cities, or longer from Chicago and New York. After traversing long stretches of ocean, the islands suddenly appear, as improbable as they must have seemed to the first Polynesians who sailed and paddled their canoes from the South Seas to this site about 750 A.D. or possibly earlier. From out of nowhere the modern visitor alights into a fully-realized dream, Hawaii. When you leave the airplane, a lei may be put around your neck, if you are on a tour. If not, you may want to buy a lei at the airport, just to get into the spirit. Leis are sometimes made of vanda orchids or of plumeria. The perfume of the lei and the warm tropical air of Hawaii immediately bathe a visitor. A range of bright flowers can be seen everywhere, starting with bougainvillea or hibiscus, the state flower, giving a technicolor aura to Hawaii. Brightly floral aloha shirts, which appear so ostentatious on the mainland, seem immediately appropriate here. Then you begin observing people in this airport. The most striking aspect of the people is that their racial origins are diverse and are primarily from the Orient. -

CITY PARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 109 GRANTS THROUGH NYC GREEN RELIEF & RECOVERY FUND AND GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC GRANT APPLICATION NOW OPEN FOR PARK VOLUNTEER GROUPS Funding Awarded For Maintenance and Stewardship of Parks by Nonprofit Organizations and For Free Live Performances in Parks, Plazas, and Gardens Across NYC July 8, 2021 - NEW YORK, NY - City Parks Foundation announced today the selection of 109 grants through two competitive funding opportunities - the NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund and GREEN / ARTS LIVE NYC. More than ever before, New Yorkers have come to rely on parks and open spaces, the most fundamentally democratic and accessible of public resources. Parks are critical to our city’s recovery and reopening – offering fresh air, recreation, and creativity - and a crucial part of New York’s equitable economic recovery and environmental resilience. These grant programs will help to support artists in hosting free, public performances and programs in parks, plazas, and gardens across NYC, along with the nonprofit organizations that help maintain many of our city’s open spaces. Both grant programs are administered by City Parks Foundation. The NYC Green Relief & Recovery Fund will award nearly $2M via 64 grants to NYC-based small and medium-sized nonprofit organizations. Grants will help to support basic maintenance and operations within heavily-used parks and open spaces during a busy summer and fall with the city’s reopening. Notable projects supported by this fund include the Harlem Youth Gardener Program founded during summer 2020 through a collaboration between Friends of Morningside Park Inc., Friends of St. Nicholas Park, Marcus Garvey Park Alliance, & Jackie Robinson Park Conservancy to engage neighborhood youth ages 14-19 in paid horticulture along with the Bronx River Alliance’s EELS Youth Internship Program and Volunteer Program to invite thousands of Bronxites to participate in stewardship of the parks lining the river banks. -

In this thesis the tours analyzed are film location tours based on the series Sex and the City and Gos- sip Girl. This theme was chosen because of the author’s passion towards films and New York City. On Location Tours was chosen because it is the largest film tour company in USA with its thousands of customers each day. This company also has individual tours based on both series in question. In the theoretical part terms around customer experience, customer satisfaction, special interest tourism and film tourism are explained. These are important terms from the point of view of this study and it is crucial to understand these before going into the analysis. A desk study was made by analyzing online re- views written in Tripadvisor about the film location tours based on Sex and the City and Gossip Girl. In the analysis both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. -

The zoning text amendment, along with the related actions, would facilitate the redevelopment of the two city-owned commuter parking lots at the St. George Ferry Terminal for a 625-ft. tall, 1,440-passenger observation wheel with an accessory terminal building including approximately 18,500 square feet (sq. ft.) of accessory retail; a 950-space, 170,000 sq ft. covered public parking facility; and a 340,000 sq. ft. a retail outlet mall with a 130,000sq. ft (approximately 200-room hotel); and 20,000 sq. ft. catering facility. A deck will be built over the existing railroad right of way that abuts Richmond Terrace to permit pedestrian and vehicular connections between Richmond Terrace and the site.
