    Gramercy Park Overview: Trustees of Gramercy Park, Gramercy Park Block Association Trustees of Gramercy Park Gramercy Park is a private ornamental park and surrounding residential district created in 1831 under a deed established by Samuel B. Ruggles, who vested the title to the Park in the Trustees. Mr. Ruggles granted the owners of surrounding residential lots and all subsequent owners “the right and privilege to frequent, use, and enjoy the Park as an easement to their respective lots.” The Park is managed by the “Park Trust” which consists of five lifetime Trustees. The conditions of Ruggles’ original 1831 deed still govern the Park today. Its provisions include an annual assessment imposed on each of the Lots to cover annual operating expenses and capital improvement projects. Park keys are annually provided to the owners of each of the surrounding Lots. The buildings on the Park have between 1-4 lots based on their Park frontage. The budget includes maintenance, payroll, security, administrative services, community relations, public relations, Park operations, events, professional fees, horticultural plants and bulbs, tree/shrub planting and care, supplies, repairs and/or restoration of the following: sidewalks, monuments, sprinkler system, equipment, benches, etc. The Gramercy Park Block Association Mr. Ruggles could not have imagined that his small residential community of Lot owners would eventually be home to over 2,000 residents. Nor could he have envisioned that Gramercy Park would be at the center of some of the densest neighborhoods and most desirable real estate in the world. The Gramercy Park Block Association organizes the community to fight battles to keep the Park private, and the surrounding lots residential.

They’re just three of 12 sculptures proposed by 12 artists and vying to inaugurate what will be the industrial park’s first space dedicated specifically to art: the High Line Plinth. If that name sounds familiar, you’re likely thinking of London’s Fourth Plinth, the prominent pedestal in Trafalgar Square that’s currently home to a colossal thumb by David Shrigley. Friends of the High Line drew inspiration directly from that 176-year-old plinth for this endeavor, which is forthcoming in the spring of 2018. The nonprofit conservancy already has an impressive history of promoting culture through High Line Art, which has placed a variety of exhibitions, commissions, and performances all along the park’s tracks, but the new plinth will establish a spot specifically for contemporary art. It will serve the same purpose as its pal across the pond, hosting a series of works by international artists on an 18-month rotating schedule — and yes, you can expect them all to be rather grand in scale, as conspicuous as the ones that have towered over the British square.

More than ever before, New Yorkers have come to rely on parks and open spaces, the most fundamentally democratic and accessible of public resources. Parks are critical to our city’s recovery and reopening – offering fresh air, recreation, and creativity - and a crucial part of New York’s equitable economic recovery and environmental resilience. These grant programs will help to support artists in hosting free, public performances and programs in parks, plazas, and gardens across NYC, along with the nonprofit organizations that help maintain many of our city’s open spaces. We are part of a national association with a membership of 41,000 professionals and students who are engaged in programs and projects related to the physical, social and economic environment. In our role as a professional advocacy organization, we offer insights and recommendations on policy matters affecting issues such as housing, transportation and the environment. The Chapter has taken an interest in the proposal to form a Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) for the area surrounding the Hudson River Park. While we are generally in support of the proposal, we wish to point out a number of concerns we have with what appears to be an emerging trend of relying on alternative sources of funding for what should be a basic governmental responsibility. BACKGROUND The proposal for the NID was introduced by Friends of Hudson River Park, a private not- for-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for the “completion, care and enhancement” of the Park. Hudson River Park is a regional asset that not only serves the west side of Manhattan, but draws people from all around the metropolitan area. The creation of the Park led to a dramatic increase in property values along West Street, 10th, 11th & 12th Avenues and their intersecting streets.

    EIGHTEEN MAJOR NEW YORK AREA MUSEUMS PARTICIPATE IN INSTAGRAM SWAP THE FRICK COLLECTION PAIRS WITH NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, eighteen major New York City area institutions have joined forces to celebrate their unique collections and spaces on Instagram. All day today, February 2, the museums will post photos from this exciting project. Each participating museum paired with a sister institution, then set out to take photographs at that institution, capturing objects and moments that resonated with their own collections, exhibitions, and themes. As anticipated, each organization’s unique focus offers a new perspective on their partner museum. Throughout the day, the Frick will showcase its recent visit to the New-York Historical Society on its Instagram feed using the hashtag #MuseumInstaSwap.
