This curated guide highlights the best of the west (side). Nearly all of the listings are within a 10-minute walk of the Public Square and Gardens (although we’ve included some standouts that are worth a longer trip). A coffee spot? Check. Hardcore workout? Boom. Dinner and a show? You’re covered. An overview kicks things off, but it is the ensuing collection of maps—organized by time of day—that will point you to whatever you need.

SOHO immediate surroundings Picture Perfect

The walls of your new Hudson Yards apartment are empty and the heart of ’s art scene is just down the street. Seems like the time is right to start—or enhance— your collection. We asked an expert for a few pointers.

THE ART MAVEN Jill Arnold Bull, a member of the Senior Leadership Team for Private Risk Management at Wells Fargo, the Preferred Bank of Hudson Yards (the New York headquarters will be at 30 Hudson Yards.) More High Line Nine pp 33, 37 relevant to this conversation, Bull is the insurance division’s National Fine Art Specialist—basically, the Rene Russo character in The Thomas Crown Affair. She is a collector (of photography) in her own right too. “If a piece haunts me—if it keeps me up at night—that matters more than market value.”

First, look at a lot of work. Art appreciation is a personal experience. Take the time to build a visual inventory of art and artists that move you. Figurative? Contemporary? Old Masters? Check out a variety of methods and mediums. As you narrow your preferences, read about artists, time periods and processes that intrigue you.

Which leads us to ... a few outings in Chelsea. Some people chat up museum curators. Others travel the globe to art fairs— Basel in or Switzerland, for example—to engage with dealers and train Gagosian Gallery p 37 their eye. But you can find all you need right nearby (which makes us at Wells Fargo even more excited to move in!). Chelsea offers work of every sort, from artists emerging to A-list. Don’t be afraid to visit renowned dealers like David Zwirner and Gagosian Gallery. They know a lot—not least that the more you, the potential client, understands, the more likely you will be to buy.

Protect your purchase. Pieces are most often damaged in transit. So don’t trust just any moving company; hire a professional art handler. Then when the piece is safely home, remain vigilant. Keep it away from direct sunlight, fireplaces and high-trafficked areas, especially if that traffic includes kids and pets. My Wells Fargo Insurance team educates collectors on care and handling. (Free advice: Windex is a killer of prints and photographs.) And when bad weather looms, we can arrange safe passage to a secure facility. If the worst happens, documentation is key. Save all bills of sale and have your pieces regularly appraised.

SOHO Chef José Chef Andrés David Chang coming soon Dining at Hudson Yards

A foodie’s fantasy is taking shape at Hudson Yards. On the menu: new concepts from the world’s top chefs and restaurateurs, curated by the legendary Thomas Keller. There will be a 35,000-square-foot dining experience and market inspired by Barcelona’s Boqueria; the latest addition to Momofuku’s empire, this one taking its cues from the Des Gunewardena cuisines of the , Korea and Japan; two Italian and David Loewi restaurants (a white tablecloth destination with a Venetian accent and a more casual option); a thoughtfully sourced American grill; elegant Greek seafood; a modern brasserie, and a classic American offering. Add to this esteemed lineup a wide array of cafés and fast-casual choices and it is clear that the gustatory needs of Hudson Yards residents, employees and visitors will be well covered—from early- morning breakfast to late-night snack.
