Lerkendal, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 - 20:45 CET Group F - Matchday 5

Despite and Real Madrid CF having qualified for the knockout stages of the competition, the meeting between Rosenborg BK and Olympiacos CFP still has plenty of significance. The side finishing third in the group continues in European football in the UEFA Cup, and both clubs are still firmly in contention.

Norwegian edge •Rosenborg will hope to keep their season going after missing out on a 14th consecutive domestic title last month. The Norwegian club are the favourites to reach the UEFA Cup, by virtue of their 3-1 win at Olympiacos on the opening day of this season's competition, and the fact the Greek side have yet to record a point following their first four games.

•On Matchday 1, Rosenborg pulled off a surprise win against an Olympiacos team with a useful home record and who had taken the lead when Alejandro Lago put through his own net. and Øyvind Storflor replied for the Norwegian side, either side of a Dimitrios Mavrogenidis own goal. Previous encounter •The clubs were drawn together in one previous UEFA Champions League season, in the 1997/98 tournament. On Matchday 2, the teams met in , with Rosenborg recording a resounding 5-1 win. The Norewegian side then drew 2-2 in the return match, but their group tally of eleven points was not enough to see them progress.

, still in the Rosenborg squad, was one of the stars of the 5-1 win with two first-half goals, while striker was also on target twice, and striking partner completed the scoring. Peter Oforiquaye, aged 17, became the competition's youngest scorer with Olympiacos's consolation.

•Rushfeldt added another two goals on Matchday 6 in Greece, but current Olympiacos co-captains Mavrogenidis and Predrag Djordjević countered with goals for the home side. Djordjević equalised after 88 minutes to prevent Rosenborg from taking three points and reaching the knockout stages. Mixed record in Greece • In their other ties against Greek opposition, Rosenborg have twice encountered Olympiacos's rivals Panathiniakos FC. In the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League qualifying round, Rosenborg won 30 at home after extra time to eliminate the Greek club by a 31 aggregate margin. • Last season, Rosenborg were grouped with Panathinaikos in the UEFA Champions League group stages. Panathinaikos won 21 at home, but Rosenborg dealt a blow to Greek chances of progress with a 22 draw in Trondheim. Two secondhalf goals from

Thorstein Helstad were eventually to allow Arsenal FC and PSV Eindhoven instead to reach the knockout stages. No wins in Norway • Olympiacos, still looking for their first win in Norway, have met one other club from the country in UEFA competition, when paired with FK Molde in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League first group stage. Olympiacos won their home game 31 on Matchday 3 thanks to two goals from Giovanni and another from Luciano, but Molde recovered for the reverse fixture to win 32 in Norway. It was their only group win, but both teams were eliminated.

Team facts: Rosenborg • Such has been their recent dominance of Norwegian football, Rosenborg have been involved in every UEFA Champions League since the 1995/96 season with the exception of the 2003/04 campaign when they exited the competition at the third qualifying round stage. They lost 10 on aggregate to Spanish side RC Deportivo La Coruña for whom Alberto Luque scored the only goal of the tie in the 16th minute of the second leg at the Riazor stadium.

• Rosenborg thus switched to the UEFA Cup where they defeated FK Ventspils and FK Crvena Zvezda before exiting on away goals to SL Benfica in the third round.

• Their best performance to date in UEFA club competition coincides with their only involvement in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, when in the 1996/97 season, the Norwegian side lost 31 on aggregate to the eventual beaten finalists, Juventus.

• Last year, Rosenborg won the 2004 Norwegian Tippeligaen on goal difference from Vålerenga IF. • It meant once more, the third qualifying round, which for Rosenborg has become a habit with six appearances in the past six seasons. This season, they improved their record to five wins from six by defeating Romanian champions FC Steaua Bucuresti. • The two sides shared a 11 draw in with Constantin Iacob putting the home side ahead after 30 minutes only for Norwegian international striker to equalise five minutes from time. Rosenborg took control in the return leg in Trondheim as they raced to a threegoal lead thanks to the efforts of (38), Alexander Ødegaard (57) and the misfortune of Mirel Radoi (60) who put through his own net. But Radoi (74) atoned for his error and when Iacob (76) added a second for the visitors, Rosenborg had to dig deep to keep the hopes of a group stage berth alive. • With Steaua tamed, Rosenborg stunned Greek champions Olympiacos CFP by recording a 31 away victory on the opening matchday. Olympiacos actually opened the scoring thanks to Alejandro Lago's own goal after 19 minutes, but Rosenborg were level by the break thanks to Per Ciljan Skjelbred (42). The home side then scored an own goal of their own through Dimitrios Mavrogenidis three minutes into the second period

before Rosenborg scored their third goal four minutes into added time through Øyvind Storflor. • But the Norwegian champions were unable to extend their unbeaten run. Lyon came knocking and continued their impressive form. Cris scored the only goal of the game on the stroke of halftime. • Although they opened the scoring, Rosenborg left Madrid with a 41 defeat at the end of Matchday 3. Roar Strand gave Rosenborg a shock 40thminute lead only for the Spanish side to find inspiration in the unlikeliest of sources as Jonathan Woodgate's equalising header three minutes into the second half paved the way to victory. Raúl González (52), Iván Helguera (68) and David Beckham (82) added further goals for the home side before the end. • Two firsthalf goals carried Madrid to a third successive UEFA Champions League victory and the knockout stages of the competition on Matchday 4 at the expense of a spirited Rosenborg side who were unfortunate to find goalkeeper Iker Casillas at the top of his form. A Mikael Dorsin own goal (26) followed by a closerange effort from Guti (41) enabled the visitors to survive an awkward second half.

• To date in UEFA club competition, Rosenborg have played on 136 occasions with 52 wins, 26 draws and 58 defeats. In that spell, the Norwegian side have scored 205 goals while conceding 231 times.

Team facts: Olympiacos • Olympiacos are making their ninth successive appearance in the competition with their best performance coming in the 1998/99 season when they advanced to the quarter finals in what amounts to their best season in UEFA club competition. • On that occasion, the Greek side lost 32 on aggregate to Juventus. (37) and (78) had given the Italian side a twogoal cushion in the opening leg at the Stadio Delle Alpi only for Andreas Niniadis to fire Olympiacos an 89thminute lifeline. They looked set to profit as in the return leg Sinisa Gogić put them ahead after 13 minutes only for Conte to equalise five minutes from time to send Juventus through. • Olympiacos won the Greek Ethniki Kategoria by one point from Panathinaikos FC and thus advanced directly to the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage as one of the 16 automatic qualifiers. • The Greek champions were stunned by Rosenborg BK on the opening matchday, crashing to a 31 home defeat against a team struggling to finds their best form in the Norwegian Tippeligaen. Olympiacos actually opened the scoring thanks to Alejandro Lago's own goal after 19 minutes, but Rosenborg were level by the break thanks to Per Ciljan Skjelbred (42). The home side then scored an own goal of their own through Dimitrios Mavrogenidis three minutes into the second period before Rosenborg scored their third goal four minutes into stoppage time through Øyvind Storflor.

• A further defeat followed on the second matchday as Real Madrid CF scored four minutes from time through Roberto Soldado to record a 21 win. The Spanish side had taken the lead through Raúl González after nine minutes only for Pantelis Kafes to equalise three minutes into the second half.

• Olympiacos were denied their first points in this season's competition when a last minute Sidney Govou goal gave Olympique Lyonnais a 21 win at the Stade Gerland. The Greek side had equalised moments earlier through Pantelis Kafes, only for Lyon, who had taken the lead through Juninho Pernambucano's fourthminute freekick, to snatch a dramatic win when the Brazilian floated a ball into the penalty area for Govou to volley over the onrushing . • Olympiacos remain pointless after four matches as Olympique Lyonnais sealed their place in the last 16 of the competition with four goals in 16 minutes either side of half time to claim a comeback victory at the Greek side’s expense on Matchday 4. Needing to win to keep alive their own hopes of escaping the group stage, Haruna Babangida had given the home team the perfect start at the Georgios with a goal inside the first three minutes. Lyon weathered the storm, however, and Juninho Pernambucano equalised four minutes before the interval with a trademark freekick. added another before the break and by the time the Norwegian scored his second on 57 minutes, Lyon were coasting to a healthy victory as Mahamadou Diarra (55) had also got in on the act.

• In the European Champion Clubs' Cup and UEFA Champions League combined, the Greek side have played 86 matches with 25 wins, 18 draws and 43 losses with 101 goals scored and 146 conceded.

• In all UEFA club competition, their record reads: played 163, won 59, drawn 30, lost 76, scored 201 goals and conceded 261.

• Argentinian central defender Gabriel Schürrer made his first league appearance of the season on Saturday.

FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle to enter the group stage. • Defending champions Liverpool FC entered the competition at the first qualifying round stage having not secured one of the automatic qualification slots available for finishing in the top four places in last season's English Premiership, but they are not the only club to have played six matches to advance to the group stage a feat shared by FC Artmedia. Head coach profiles Per-Mathias Høgmo Per-Mathias Høgmo was an industrious winger for Gratangen IL, FK Mjølner, Tromsø IL and IFK Norrköping in the late 1970s and 1980s, but made a name for himself when he turned his attentions to coaching. His only playing honour was the 1986 Norwegian Cup with Tromsø in 1986; as a coach he has won Olympic gold. He started his coaching career in 1989, leading several local sides in the Tromsø area before moving east to take over at Moss FK. After that stint he took the position that was to win him fame, Norway women's coach, having previously been involved with the men's Under-16 team. Although Norway relinquished their hold on the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1999, finishing fourth, they claimed Olympic gold a year later when beating the United States 3-2 in Sydney. Høgmo returned to men's coaching with the Norway U21 side but was unable to match his previous success, and in late 2003 became Tromsø coach. Before his arrival they had narrowly avoided relegation, but in his year in charge finished fourth to earn a place in the newly-formed pan-Scandinavian Royal League. Høgmo, however, stepped down and spent some time outside coaching working as a television pundit before answering a call from struggling champions Rosenborg BK in August 2005. Høgmo endured four league defeats in his opening matches, but steadied the ship after a fine UEFA Champions League win at Olympiacos CFP.

Trond Sollied Trond Sollied is a Norwegian coach with the happy knack of winning titles in whatever country he has worked. He took over at Olympiacos CFP in the summer after a particularly successful spell with Club Brugge KV. Sollied enjoyed a relatively successful playing career, turning out for various clubs including Vålerenga IF, Rosenborg BK and FK Bodø/Glimt as well as winning 15 caps and scoring once for Norway. He began his coaching career at Bodø/Glimt in 1992 and, as player-coach, he led them to a Norwegian first division title, a second-placed finish in the top flight and third place in 1995. Nonetheless, he was dismissed in 1996 and eventually temporarily took over at Rosenborg in 1998 and led the Trondheim club to the league title. He subsequently moved to Belgium and had a brief spell at KAA Gent before being approached by Club Brugge KV in the summer of 2000. His coaching philosophy of a physical approach and strong team spirit proved successful with two Belgian league titles in 2003 and 2005 and two cup successes in 2002 and 2004. However, he left the Belgian club in somewhat acrimonious circumstances in June 2005 before promptly taking over at Olympiacos. "I chose Olympiacos for two reasons," he explained. "First, because they are in the Champions League, and second because I met [club president] Socrates Kokkalis who persuaded me that I will be working at a very high level."

Domestic news Cris crucial for leaders Lyon (Sunday, 20 November 2005) Olympiacos CFP and Olympique Lyonnais continue to dominate their respective leagues following weekend wins. However, Real Madrid CF's domestic title aspirations suffered a blow in 'el clásico', while Rosenborg BK suffered an altogether different kind of setback.

Real Madrid CF 0-3 FC Barcelona Real Madrid’s Primera División title hopes were dented on Saturday after being defeated 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu in 'el clásico'. Vanderlei Luxemburgo's side came into the game boosted by the return to fitness of Ronaldo (ankle) and (groin), who were restored to the starting lineup, while Julio Baptista (knee) and Guti (thigh) came back on the bench.

However, it mattered little to their opponents who broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Samuel Eto'o beat Iker Casillas after a fine run by Lionel Messi. Casillas reacted well to keep out a Messi effort after the break, but could not stop Ronaldinho doubling the lead just before the hour. The Brazilian struck his second twelve minutes from time to complete a miserable evening for the home side, who had Raúl González withdrawn in the second half with a knee injury.

"We had a lot of players who had just recovered from injuries," said Luxemburgo. "Eto'o's goal was the beginning of our problems. Ronaldinho had a great game and anyone who appreciates good football has to applaud. Barcelona played well but we have to carry on working knowing that we lost against a great team."

Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 ES Troyes AC Lyon continued their fine run at the top of on Saturday after recording their seventh straight league win at home against Troyes thanks to two goals from Cris. The Brazilian defender headed in Benoît Pedretti's free-kick after 27 minutes, cancelling out Benjamin Nivet's goal for the visitors seven minutes earlier, before striking again with a left-footed volley in the final 15 minutes to equal the club's record winning sequence in the league. Tiago and Juninho Pernambucano missed out through suspension, though the only injury problem ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League trip to Madrid is French defender Eric Abidal, who is out for three months with a foot injury suffered during France's 3-2 win against Costa Rica on 9 November. Coach Gérard Houllier, whose side has still yet to lose a game in any competition this season, said: "The opportunities we missed could have cost us dearly. But when the strikers fail to score, we have other players who can. My team is not the type to panic when they fall behind, and have shown that they will continue to play the game as they know they should."

Rosenborg BK Rosenborg go into their crunch UEFA Champions League match against Olympiacos lacking match practice, having not played since their 2-0 home defeat against Real Madrid on 1 November. With the Norwegian domestic season over, they had scheduled a friendly at home against Tromsø, but the match was called off after Tromsø suffered problems with the plane taking them to Trondheim. Ørjan Berg (ankle) and Miika Koppinen (knee) are both long-term absentees from the Rosenborg lineup. Goalkeeper Espen Johnsen has a recurring neck problem, but was still fit enough to sit on the bench for both of Norway's 1-0 FIFA World Cup play-off defeats against the Czech Republic. Rosenborg coach Per-Mathias Høgmo was quick to emphasise the importance of the Olympiacos game. "If we win, we are guaranteed a place in the Round of 32 of the UEFA Cup," he said. "I think we have the quality to win the UEFA Cup, if we get into the competition."

Atromitos FC 0-1 Olympiacos CFP

Olympiacos maintained their grip at the top in the Greek Alpha Ethniki on Saturday with victory by a solitary goal at Atromitos. Ieroklis Stoltidis proved the match winner, heading Dani García's cross into the net after 58 minutes to ensure Trond Sollied's side returned to the capital with victory and 24 points from ten games.

Sollied has a number of injury problems to contend with ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Matchday 5 encounter at Rosenborg BK. Predrag Djordjević (knee) and Yaya Touré (foot) were both absent for the weekend win and are considered doubtful to travel to Norway, while Michalis Kapsis was ruled out following a calf complaint, allowing Spanish centreback Gabriel Schürrer to make a first league start this term. Michalis Konstantinou, Ioannis Taralidis and Stylianos Venetidis remain long term absentees. "I am happy with the three points," said Sollied. "It was a hardfought encounter in which we struggled to find our rhythm due to Atromitos's physical nature. This victory is important for our selfconfidence. I am also satisfied with the performance of the players introduced today to replace the absentees. But in Trondheim on Wednesday we must play better in order to get a positive result."
