In the years since its first performance at the Celebration Theater in Los Angeles, the staged version of “Naked Boys Singing” has become an international phenomenon, playing successfully in more than 40 cities and in six languages all over the globe. Director Troy Christian has restaged the play for the film and come up with new arrangements for the original songs. The opening song, “Gratuitous Nudity,” is written and performed in such a sense of fun as to help the audience get over any nervousness they might have about the nudity. Before you know it, most people forget the performers are still naked, well, kind-of, but of course, that’s one of the points made in this light- hearted study of nudity, what we think of it and how we react to it. Naked Boys Singing! is a fun, joyous, and even liberating experience, guaranteed to touch your heart in places and leave you with a smile on your face. You may even find yourself afterwards singing some of the songs in the shower. The 2-minute trailer spotlights seven of Madonna's male dancers, who joined the entertainer for her controversial "Blonde Ambition" world tour in 1990 and documents how their lives changed, using both old and new footage along with never-before-seen images. The featured dancers are Oliver Crumes III, Carlton Wilborn, Luis Camacho, Salim "Slam" Gauwloos, Kevin Stea, Jose Gutierez and Gabriel Trupin (who passed away in 1995). The film's title comes from the opening line in Madonna's 1990 hit song "Vogue." Voguing was a dance style that evolved out of the Harlem, N.Y., LGBT ballroom scene of the 1980s, and was already a popular art form among African-American and Latino LGBTs before it was later mainstreamed by the singer. A few of Madonna's chosen dancers were already popular ballroom "Voguers," such as Jose Guiterez, who was a member of the House of Xtravaganza. The dancers' high-profile stint on Madonna's tour helped break barriers for generations of LGBT people pushing for more visibility and acceptance; and toured the United States during a socially conservative time in the country-Republican president George Bush, Sr. was in office, the AIDS crisis was still claiming thousands of lives, and LGBT people were openly discriminated against in almost all segments of society.
