Beneath the Surface: Argentine-United States Relations As Perón Assumed the Presidency
Beneath the Surface: Argentine-United States Relations as Perón Assumed the Presidency Vivian Reed June 5, 2009 HST 600 Latin American Seminar Dr. John Rector 1 Juan Domingo Perón was elected President of Argentina on February 24, 1946,1 just as the world was beginning to recover from World War II and experiencing the first traces of the Cold War. The relationship between Argentina and the United States was both strained and uncertain at this time. The newly elected Perón and his controversial wife, Eva, represented Argentina. The United States’ presence in Argentina for the preceding year was primarily presented through Ambassador Spruille Braden.2 These men had vastly differing perspectives and visions for Argentina. The contest between them was indicative of the relationship between the two nations. Beneath the public and well-documented contest between Perón and United States under the leadership of Braden and his successors, there was another player whose presence was almost unnoticed. The impact of this player was subtlety effective in normalizing relations between Argentina and the United States. The player in question was former United States President Herbert Hoover, who paid a visit to Argentina and Perón in June of 1946. This paper will attempt to describe the nature of Argentine-United States relations in mid-1946. Hoover’s mission and insights will be examined. In addition, the impact of his visit will be assessed in light of unfolding events and the subsequent historiography. The most interesting aspect of the historiography is the marked absence of this episode in studies of Perón and Argentina3 even though it involved a former United States President and the relations with 1 Alexander, 53. -

IF YOU’RE ON THE OUTSIDE, YOU’RE IN: THE INFAMOUS RED VELVET ROPE CULTURE AT STUDIO 54 A Senior Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in American Studies By Alison P. Baird Washington, D.C. April 15, 2019 IF YOU’RE ON THE OUTSIDE, YOU’RE IN: THE NOTORIOUS RED VELVET ROPE CULTURE AT STUDIO 54 Alison P. Baird Thesis Adviser: Ellen Gorman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Studio 54, the infamous New York City discotheque open from 1977 to 1980, was a notorious site in New York City for not only being one of the most sought-after venues in nightlife, but also for its ruthless red velvet rope culture. Disco was a defining artifact in American culture in the 1970s and greatly reflected the social and political atmosphere across the country. With the culmination of various political upheavals such as the Vietnam War and the Watergate Scandal, many Americans simply wanted to party, use drugs, and openly explore their sexuality. Studio 54 was, arguably, the most influential and well-known of the many discos— admired and loathed by those within and on the outside of the disco scene. Many outsiders and eager spectators observed the club as exclusionary and dictator-like. This thesis deconstructs the red velvet rope culture and analyzes the innate behavior and qualities of the clubbers with the aim to understand how these people contributed to the tremendous popularity of Studio 54. Gossip columns, newspapers, tabloids and archived footage offers compelling insight to the way of the disco-door as well as the qualities and behaviors that club goers possessed as such to gain admission. -

When Alina Simone agreed to write a book about Madonna, she thought it might provide an interesting excuse to indulge her own eighties nostalgia. Wrong. What Simone discovered instead was a tidal wave of already published information about Madonna-and her own ambivalence about, maybe even jealousy of, the Material Girl s overwhelming commercial success. With the straight-ahead course stymied, Simone set o on a quirky detour through the backroads of celebrity and fandom and the people who love or loathe Madonna. In this witty, sometimes acerbic, always perceptive chronicle, Simone begins by trying to understand why Madonna s birthplace, Bay City, Michigan, won t even put up a sign to celebrate its most famous citizen, and ends by asking why local bands who make music that s authentic and true can disappear with barely a trace. -

This dissertation is dedicated to them. It would have not been possible without their stories. I want to give my gratitude to my mother, who set an example by completing her doctoral degree with three exuberant boys and a full-time job in mental health. I also want to dedicate this to my father, who encouraged me to accomplish my goals and taught me that nothing is too great to achieve. I want to thank my siblings who have shown support throughout my doctoral degree. I also want to thank my husband, Michael Saginaw, for his patience while I spent many hours in solitude while writing my dissertation. Without all of their support, this chapter of my life would have been meaningless. -

In the years since its first performance at the Celebration Theater in Los Angeles, the staged version of “Naked Boys Singing” has become an international phenomenon, playing successfully in more than 40 cities and in six languages all over the globe. Director Troy Christian has restaged the play for the film and come up with new arrangements for the original songs. The opening song, “Gratuitous Nudity,” is written and performed in such a sense of fun as to help the audience get over any nervousness they might have about the nudity. Before you know it, most people forget the performers are still naked, well, kind-of, but of course, that’s one of the points made in this light- hearted study of nudity, what we think of it and how we react to it. Naked Boys Singing! is a fun, joyous, and even liberating experience, guaranteed to touch your heart in places and leave you with a smile on your face. You may even find yourself afterwards singing some of the songs in the shower.
