“Vogue” Em Performances Do Carnaval Carioca Strike a Pose!
ARTIGO COMUN. MÍDIA CONSUMO, SÃO PAULO, V. 16, N. 46, P. 376-395, MAI./AGO. 2019 DOI 10.18568/CMC.V16I46.1901 Strike a pose! Abstract: The article discusses the mediations of Madonna’s Music Vid- eo Vogue, seeking to discuss its agency on peripheral bodies in two moments: the first, in the 80s, when the song and music video appropriates the steps and gestures of Voguing created by the LGBT scene in New York; and the second moment, two decades later, when the music video is, in turn, one of the refer- ences for young, black and gay dancers who practice Vogue dance during their presentations on Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools in the present time. -

In the years since its first performance at the Celebration Theater in Los Angeles, the staged version of “Naked Boys Singing” has become an international phenomenon, playing successfully in more than 40 cities and in six languages all over the globe. Director Troy Christian has restaged the play for the film and come up with new arrangements for the original songs. The opening song, “Gratuitous Nudity,” is written and performed in such a sense of fun as to help the audience get over any nervousness they might have about the nudity. Before you know it, most people forget the performers are still naked, well, kind-of, but of course, that’s one of the points made in this light- hearted study of nudity, what we think of it and how we react to it. Naked Boys Singing! is a fun, joyous, and even liberating experience, guaranteed to touch your heart in places and leave you with a smile on your face. You may even find yourself afterwards singing some of the songs in the shower. Media Culture: Cultural Studies, Identity and Politics Between The
Media Culture Media Culture develops methods and analyses of contemporary film, television, music, and other artifacts to discern their nature and effects. The book argues that media culture is now the dominant form of culture which socializes us and provides materials for identity in terms of both social reproduction and change. Through studies of Reagan and Rambo, horror films and youth films, rap music and African- American culture, Madonna, fashion, television news and entertainment, MTV, Beavis and Butt-Head, the Gulf War as cultural text, cyberpunk fiction and postmodern theory, Kellner provides a series of lively studies that both illuminate contemporary culture and provide methods of analysis and critique. Many people today talk about cultural studies, but Kellner actually does it, carrying through a unique mixture of theoretical analysis and concrete discussions of some of the most popular and influential forms of contemporary media culture. Criticizing social context, political struggle, and the system of cultural production, Kellner develops a multidimensional approach to cultural studies that broadens the field and opens it to a variety of disciplines. He also provides new approaches to the vexed question of the effects of culture and offers new perspectives for cultural studies. Anyone interested in the nature and effects of contemporary society and culture should read this book. Kellner argues that we are in a state of transition between the modern era and a new postmodern era and that media culture offers a privileged field of study and one that is vital if we are to grasp the full import of the changes currently shaking us. -

The Value of Dance the Value of Dance 3
2 The Value of Dance The Value of Dance 3 Vogue- A Contextual Recap Vogue may have been a single by Madonna, released in 1990, but the track has a large back history worth more than the platinum single. Vogue was a dance style started by LGBTQ African American and Latino American groups of Harlem in the 1970s, as a way to seek refuge from the poverty, crime and prejudice they faced. It was part of a larger subculture called Ball Culture, or the underground ball scene - this was a subculture started in New York the 1920s, attended mostly by white males and main- ly consisted of drag fashion shows. Due to racism and restrictions, black males of the ball culture created their own underground scene, but because of hard- ships and revolution, the two segregated groups eventually became more inclusive and integrated, leading to a wider range of categories, including vogue. The subculture featured competitions in which con- testants would battle to gain status and recognition, these were said to be an alternative to street fight: ar- guments were settled through no-contact dancing as opposed to physical fights or crime. These competi- tions are called 'Balls' and were highly significant for dancers. Vogue as a dance style was developed from the mag- azine 'Vogue'; dancers would imitate the poses of models from covers of magazines or catwalks, dis- playing their desire to be as glamorous and famous as the cover girls. The whole culture derived from a longing for glamour and fame that, at the time, was extremely difficult for these minority groups to achieve - the ball scene allowed them to live their fantasies which is why the dance was so valuable to this minority culture.
