IN BRIEF - Barrier reef braces for flood impact AUSTRALIA Saturday, January 15, 2011

As floodwaters in the Queensland capital Brisbane begin to recede, scientists are casting their eyes out to sea and wondering whether the region's greatest natural feature, the Great Barrier Reef, will be scarred by the experience. This is the world's largest reef system - in fact, the largest thing on Earth made by living organisms, stretching for 2,600km along the coast.

Its myriad of islands and tendrils teem with fish, also supporting dugongs, dolphins, turtles and shellfish - and because of all that, a tourist trade worth several billion dollars per year.

The flood waters emerging from Brisbane itself are not a major concern, as the reef lies further north.

But northern rivers are also seeing flow rates way above normal.

As the water floods into the seas west of the reef, it inevitably freshens the environment around the reef; which is not good news.

IN BRIEF - Atrium Innovations Acquires Omega-3 maker CANADA Friday, January 14, 2011

QUEBEC CITY - Atrium Innovations Inc. (TSX: ATB), a recognized leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of professionally endorsed, science-based dietary supplements for the health and nutrition industry, today announced the purchase of Belgium-based Minami Nutrition , a niche brand of superior quality scientifically proven Omega-3 products primarily sold in several European countries.

Minami's product portfolio consists of sixteen Omega-3 supplements with revenues derived largely from Belgium, Holland, Ireland and the UK. Minami's products distinguish themselves through an exclusive sourcing of oil with a high level of concentration and purity and a small ecological footprint. Some competing brands may require a larger number of softgel capsules to deliver the full benefit of Omega-3 on a daily basis. In contrast, with up to 90-95% of pure Omega-3 per softgel, Minami's products require considerably fewer capsules. Based on a unique, exclusive and patented manufacturing process, the purity of Minami's Omega-3 supplements surpasses industry standards for PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals. Finally, no chemical products are used in the manufacturing process and the oil is derived from non- endangered species of fish or algae. Minami's fish oil has Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) certification which is approved by the European Parliament. Friday, January 14, 2011

Since Monday, 10 January, the Hamburg Süd Group has been presenting itself on the internet in a completely revised design and with an optimised information and service offering. The new internet presence features modern, user-friendly navigation and takes account of the specific needs of different target groups with the introduction of an additional domain.

Under the new domain www.hamburgsud-line.com the Hamburg Süd Group provides information solely on its portfolio in the container liner services. The website is aimed primarily at existing and potential customers, as well as other business partners, who are informed in detail about the shipping group’s products and services and will quickly find the right contact in their locality. Furthermore, under “My Hamburg Süd”, a platform for registered customers, all key eCommerce functions (from schedules, tariffs, bookings and shipping instructions to B/L printouts and Track & Trace) can be accessed with far greater ease and convenience than previously.

A further, new element of the website is the “Quality and Environment” section. Here Hamburg Süd shows, among other things, the steps it is taking to reduce the environmental impact caused by shipping. The section also features, for the first time, a CO2 calculator which – in line with the methodology established by the Clean Cargo Working Group – can be used to compute a container’s carbon footprint from port to port.

IN BRIEF - Pescafria Barents Sea Cod enters MSC assessment SPAIN Friday, January 14, 2011

The Pescafria-Pesquera Rodriguez Barents Sea Cod (Gadus morhua) fishery has today entered formal assessment against the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. If the fishery succeeds in securing certification, products sourced from the fishery will be eligible to carry the blue MSC . Pescafria-Pesquera Rodriguez is a family-run company, founded in 1940 and based in the Basque Country and Galicia. The company holds 27.50% of the Spanish quota for cod in the Barents Sea which equates to 3,700 tonnes in the most recent year and which is the largest quota at national level. The main market for the fishery at present is the United Kingdom and the main product is frozen cod fillets; a small proportion is sold to the Spanish market as salted cod and cod roe.

The MSC runs the world’s leading environmental certification programme for wild capture fisheries. The assessment of the Spanish cod fishery will be carried out by an independent, expert team. The team will assess the fishery against the three Principles of the MSC environmental standard and examine the health of the target stock (the Northeast Arctic cod stock); the impact of the fishery on the wider marine ecosystem; and the effectiveness of the fishery’s management in securing the long- term sustainability of the stock and minimising impacts on the ecosystem.

IN BRIEF - Hugh's the Big Fish Fight UNITED KINGDOM Thursday, January 13, 2011

Tonight Channel 4's top chefs join forces in the Big Fish Fight championing and celebrating lesser known delicacies of the deep. This season featuring programmes from fellow chefs Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver, aims to champion sustainable seafood and celebrate lesser known delicacies of the deep.

You can also follow the progress of Hugh's Fish Fight on Facebook and Twitter.

Hugh’s Fish Fight is supported by a wide coalition of environmental Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and, we hope, by a growing number of fishermen and policy makers too. A vital part of the campaign, and the area where we are currently looking for public support, is the issue of discards at sea.
