The event passed unnoticed amongst the plethora of more noteworthy public occasions. Chapter 2 of this thesis records that a certain Mr. Sp"y, with his daily vanload of passengers and goods, started the first regular service operating between the City and Port Adelaide. Transports of Delight: Pastoral, Nostalgia and Railway Travel in Post-WWII Genre Fiction Samuel John Sheppard MA by Research University of York English and Related Literature November 2020 Abstract In the mid-twentieth century, Britain’s railways underwent a range of significant developments. A transport network that, in many ways, had not changed substantially since the Edwardian period, was transformed by events such as widespread route closures, a diesel revolution, and the growing popularity of private motoring. This paper aims to examine how the significance of railways in British literature of this period changed as a result, with particular focus upon two areas of genre fiction: crime and detective fiction, and children’s literature. I am particularly concerned with the ideals of heritage and preservation which emerged in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, and how these encouraged the presentation of railways in a more sentimental light than had previously been seen. However, even with these serious handicaps, the utility and flexibilty of this self-contained power unit are so great that only in a comparatively few instances have the railroads been able to see their way clear to adopt electric locomotives and, even in these cases, only for relatively small distances. Stephenson's "Rocket" was in its day considered a wonder and when pulling one car was capable of a speed of probably 25 miles per hour. The fact that our present-day "moguls" can draw a heavy limited train at 80 miles per hour gives some indication of the theoretical and mechanical developments which have made this marvelous advance possible. In the development of any important device, what seem to us now as little things often have contributed largely to its success-- nay more, have even made that success possible. No locomotive had been at all successful until Stephenson hit upon the idea of "forced draft" by sending the exhaust steam out of the smokestack. This arrangement made possible the excessive heat of the furnace necessary to form steam rapidly enough to satisfy the demand of the locomotive. -

Why obsession with diesel cars is bad for its economy, its drivers & the environment September 2017 Two years after the Dieselgate scandal first broke the full scale of the cheating and deception by carmakers is still cheated emissions rules is becoming clearer the response from carmakers and Governments is derisory with only a tiny fraction of these diesels cleaned up. This report draws on a wide range of data and analysis to examine the e biased regulations and taxes that have artificially created the bloated sales of diesel cars in Europe that until recently represented over half of the new car market. It also examines the consequences for health and the environment and wider economic effects of dieselisation. Contrary to perceived wisdom it shows that diesel cars are not actually lower carbon than gasoline versions if emissions are considered across the full lifecycle of the vehicle. have allowed diesels to spew more toxic NOx emissions than petrol-fuelled vehicles. The lax tests allowed cheap after-treatment systems to be installed that are at the heart of the dieselgate scandal and save the car industry over Euro 500 per vehicle that would otherwise make diesel cars prohibitively expensive. -

Charles Burrell & Sons Limited Administrative History Joseph Burrell founded the business in the late 1770s, setting up originally as a general smith and repairer of agricultural tools in Thetford. He produced ploughs, harrows and rakes. Early in the 19 th century, with his brothers, James and William, he began designing his own patent agricultural machinery. In 1803 his 'improved drill for sowing crushed oat cake manure with wheat, turnips etc' won a silver cup at the Holkham sheep-shearing festival (a forerunner of the great agricultural shows). A small iron and brass foundry was started under James and continued at the St Nicholas foundry. One of James's sons, James junior, had a small shop and foundry, while the other son Charles inherited the family firm. Charles (grandson of the founder) was 20 when he took over in 1837, and was to see the name of Burrell become world-famous during his 69-year 'reign' to his death in 1906. Charles Burrell & Sons, steam and agricultural machinery manufacturers were the first to introduce a practical heavy duty traction engine for use on roads. The firm produced traction engines, steam rollers and ploughing engines. More than 4,000 engines left the works during the life of the firm and many were put in countries around the world. In 1848 Burrell's produced their own single cylinder (SC) portable in 1848 which they exhibited at the Royal Agricultural Show. The firm continued to manufacture other agricultural machinery, and produced the first combined threshing and finishing machine about this time. Burrell joined forces with engineer, James Boydell, to produce the first practical traction engine, a self-moving road engine for pulling loads. -

THANK YOU To everyone who has worked on the Railway during the August period when we have run an intensive timetable on a daily basis, as well as coping with excursion traffic from the mainline network and various specials including dining trains and attachments of the Hawksworth Saloon to special trains. There have “tight spots” for the hard-working roster clerks but the spirit of co-operation and helping each other has meant that we have run the advertised services and provided a good day out for the travelling public. And with many of the British public deciding during the long hot spell to holiday at home this year we have been busy. NEW VOLUNTEERS However there is no denying that we need more willing hands in all areas of the Railway. Alan Smithers is now Acting Stationmaster at Minehead and we welcome Alan to that key role but he has places and roles to fill. That is a tale that can be repeated in many areas. We have some good looking new Volunteer Recruitment leaflets available but we have to find ways of getting them into the public view and to possibly interested groups. So if you have contacts with a youth group or a U3A, a WI or Rotary Club please ask Minehead for a supply of them They may also be profitably placed in libraries or local shops. One thing is certain. Publicity materials in storage are dead paper and represent wasted money. -
