TERRYVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH October, 2013 NEWS Celebrating 175 Years of Ministry (Est. 1838)

Dear Members and Friends of Terryville Congregational Church,

I am so excited that, later this month, we will have our very own prayer book! Made up of your favorite prayers, scripture, poems, hymns, quotes, and even religious jokes, this will be a bed-side, car-side, everywhere-side devotional booklet that we can keep and carry with us for years to come! We can share it with our children and grandchildren; we can read it together at special gatherings; and we can use it in our daily prayer lives. What a blessing and a meaningful keepsake! Later this month, when Sue has the compilation completed, I will email the book as well as make printed copies available in our narthex and church office; we can also mail it to those who are not able to come to church. My prayer and hope is that this brings much comfort, joy, and challenge to us in our lives of faith, and that it accompanies us and our families’ lives of faith for many, many years. Thank you so much to everyone who has submitted a favorite scripture, prayer, poem, etc., including those who have written their own prayers and poems to share with our congregation.

October brings cooler weather, leaves turning, pumpkins, and all the other things that are so beautiful in Connecticut in the fall. What a blessing to live here in this time and place! It also brings some meaningful events to our congregation:

Every Monday Memoire & Poetry Class with intern Mark Koyama Oct. 10 Girls’ Night Oct. 12 Eli Terry Retirement Community Dinner Oct. 17 Women’s Night Oct. 18-19 Annual Famine Event for High School Youth Oct. 20 Presentation of Bibles to our children Oct. 25 Date Night for Families Oct. 20 & 27 New Members Orientation Oct. 27 Youth Fellowship @ the Lyceum

You can read all about these activities in this newsletter!

Last but not least, Sunday, October 13 is Pledge Sunday. Sometimes we call it Stewardship Sunday, some churches call it Commitment Sunday, and others call it Generosity Sunday; whichever language you like best, this is the day to remind ourselves just how much we love this church and all the people; this is the day to remember all that this church means to us and to our community, and the many ways that we as a congregation receive and give many blessings through the work of our church; this is the day to commit ourselves to support our church both financially and also with gifts of our skills and our time. Bring your pledge form to church on October 13 and we will dedicate all our pledges and ask God to bless them and to help us as we strive to serve God in 2014 and beyond!

If someone asked you, “What do you love about your church?” what would you say? If someone asked you, “What are you doing to make your church even better?” what would you say? Let’s recommit ourselves so that our church keeps serving well into its next 175 th Anniversary – it’s 350 th – and beyond!

With Christ’s Love, Rev. Zack

2 CALLED TO CARE: We have a newly trained team which was commissioned on April 14: Ellen Cifone, Roberta Layton, Lexi Jachimski, Dickie Zalaski, and Jenn Zalaski. Somewhat similar to Stephens Ministry, Called to Care encompasses visiting and being an available listener to anyone in the congregation in need. Here are others on our team: Diane Pratt, Cheryl Brazee, Pam Eggleston, Bill Hall, Dacey Pratt, Michele Benson, Jeannie Zalaski, Louise Sweatt, and Russ Wagoner. The visiting that Called to Care does is not instead of visits from Rev. Zack but is in addition to visits from Rev. Zack. Called to Care team members are trained to do weekly (or close to weekly) home and nursing facility visits and are also available in times of more urgent needs. Because of the confidential nature of the visits, please speak with Rev. Zack if you have a need or a request. Also, if you or someone you know would like a weekly listening ear or a visit, please speak with Rev. Zack to arrange the Called to Care appointment. Called to Care team members are matched or paired with a Care receiver so that continuity can occur. We are thankful also to have a youth component to this, through the participation of Dacey Pratt. If you know of a young person who would like to talk to a peer, we have a safe space available at the church for this kind of appointment. If you are interested in hearing more about this you can speak with Rev. Zack, and/or check out the website at http://www.ucc.org/ministers/calledtocare/ .

Care package program : Through the efforts of our Spirited Sisters Women’s Group, we are giving care packages to anyone in need. The packages range from a basket of fruit, to a set of inspiring stationary, to any other comforting keepsake or gift idea. If you have an idea for a package, let us know – you can speak with the Spirited Sisters or with Rev. Zack. Also, if you know of someone in need, please speak with Rev. Zack and we will make sure they receive a package. These packages are in addition to the prayer shawls and the handmade crosses that we gift to people – what a blessing! We are very thankful to have such a caring church family. Thanks be to God!

6 WHAT DID YOU MISS? Submitted by Charlotte Crockett

If you missed any of our services during August you may have missed:

August 18 while Rev. Zack was away, to our delight Mark Douyard, son of Ray and Lois, was our guest leader at worship. Janet Johnson did the Children’s message and Ellen Anderson lead us in prayer.

You also missed a lot of beautiful music. Linda Avery’s solo of “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and Dave Nichols’ solo of “Go Light Your World” were both delightful. Another beautiful piece of music was a sending music duet “Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” by Barbara Bayer Douyard on the piano and Dan Brownell at the organ. Dave Nichols also sang “All Good Gifts” a most wonderful piece, so appropriate on the day of baptism for two sweet gifts of God.

We baptized Mason Gooch, son of Monique and Nathan Gooch and Chase Johnson, son of Janet and Aaron Johnson and Christina Mahner, daughter of Cheryl Brazee during August.

Hope everyone had a good summer, and we will see you at worship.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dan and Cassandra Hanscom had a baby boy on August 15, Connor Jonathan Hanscom. He was baptized in TCC on September 1, 2013.

Brandy Welesky celebrated a birthday.

Koryn Johnson won a blue ribbon at the Terryville Fair for one of her water colors.

8 Christian Education News Submitted by Jennifer Zalaski Christian Education Director My newsletter article this month is something I found on social media that was simply too good not to share. This blog post was found on the UCC Facebook page on Sept. 20, 2013. It is exactly what I want to say but can’t find the right words when a parent expresses exasperation over bringing their young ones to church. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did and I dare you not to tear up just a little bit when you get to the fifth paragraph. For Sunday school events please see our events page elsewhere in this newsletter.

From the blog www.iamtotallythatmom.blogspot.com May 19, 2013 Dear Parents with Young Children in church, what you do matters: You are doing something really, really important. I know it’s not easy. I see you with your arms overflowing, and I know you came to church already tired. Parenting is tiring. Really tiring.

I watch you bounce and sway trying to keep the baby quiet, juggling the infant car seat and the diaper bag as you find a seat. I see you wince as your child cries. I see you anxiously pull things out of your bag of tricks to try to quiet them.

And I see you with your toddler and your preschooler. I watch you cringe when your little girl asks an innocent question in a voice that might not be an inside voice let alone a church whisper. I hear the exasperation in your voice as you beg your child to just sit, to be quiet as you feel everyone’s eyes on you. Not everyone is looking, but I know it feels that way.

I know you’re wondering, is this worth it? Why do I bother? I know you often leave church more exhausted than fulfilled. But what you are doing is so important. When you are here, the church is filled with a joyful noise. When you are here, the Body of Christ is more fully present. When you are here, we are reminded that this worship thing we do isn’t about Bible Study or personal, quiet contemplation but coming together to worship as a community where all are welcome, where we share in the Word and Sacrament together. When you are here, I have hope that these pews won’t be empty in ten years when your kids are old enough to sit quietly and behave in worship. I know that they are learning how and why we worship now, before it’s too late. They are learning that worship is important.

I see them learning. In the midst of the cries, whines, and giggles, in the midst of the crinkling of pretzel bags and the growing pile of crumbs I see a little girl who insists on going two pews up to share peace with someone she’s never met. I hear a little boy slurping (quite loudly) every last drop of his communion wine out of the cup determined not to miss a drop of Jesus. I watch a child excitedly color a cross and point 9

to the one in the front of the sanctuary. I hear the echoes of Amens just a few seconds after the rest of the community says it together. I watch a boy just learning to read try to sound out the words in the worship book or count his way to Hymn 672. Even on weeks when I can’t see my own children learning because, well, it’s one of those mornings, I can see your children learning.

I know how hard it is to do what you’re doing, but I want you to know, it matters . It matters to me. It matters to my children to not be alone in the pew. It matters to the congregation to know that families care about faith, to see young people… and even on those weeks when you can’t see the little moments, it matters to your children.

It matters that they learn that worship is what we do as a community of faith, that everyone is welcome, that their worship matters. When we teach children that their worship matters, we teach them that they are enough right here and right now as members of the church community. They don’t need to wait until they can believe, pray or worship a certain way to be welcome here, and I know adults who are still looking to be shown that. It matters that children learn that they are an integral part of this church, that their prayers, their songs, and even their badly (or perfectly timed depending on who you ask) cries and whines are a joyful noise because it means they are present.

I know it’s hard, but thank you for what you do when you bring your children to church. Please know that your family - with all of its noise, struggle, commotion, and joy – are not simply tolerated, you are a vital part of the community gathered in worship.

12 From the Music Director Daniel A. Brownell

Fall greetings to you all! What a beautiful time of year to enjoy the beauty of New England and to worship God for His bountiful color. It is truly amazing how beautiful the process of death and rebirth can look. This month will feature some wonderful performances, including the fall debut of our Youth and Cherub Choirs on October 6 th . The Youth Choir will present Shout to the Lord, which is based upon the Christian rock tune of the same name by Martin Nystrom and the Cherubs will present a setting of Jesus Loves Me. Ryan Dellavecchia, Bethany Reek and Alaina Ehmer will present solos during the Children’s Offertory during the month. Also that day, the Sanctuary Choir will present a congregation favorite, Come and Find the Quiet Center which is often featured in our Call to Worship sections. On October 13 th the Sanctuary Choir will perform a John Rutter classic, A Clare Benediction, which is a tribute to the Choir at Clare College in England, which Rutter had helped found. It is a tender blessing of peace and joy. The Cherub Choir will also perform Jesus Loves Me. On Oct. 20 th , the Choir will present a Bell on the German hymn How Great Our Joy. A bell peal is a pattern of repetitive that is usually associated with the quarter hour patterns heard from towers. For instance the Westminster Abbey bell pattern is one such bell peal. October 27 th is Reformation Sunday which is the Sunday that we celebrate the founding of the Protestant Christian Church, beginning with Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. We will feature Lutheran hymns and music commemorating that event. A Mighty Fortress, actually penned by Luther himself, is probably the most famous Lutheran chorale, and I will also perform two organ settings of the hymn, one by Johann Pachelbel, and Johann Walther, the other “Father” of Lutheran hymnody.

Music Department Daniel A. Brownell, Music Director

TCC offers four music ensembles: Cherub Choir, Youth Choir, Sanctuary Choir and hand bell Choir. Each choir has a more detailed description below.

Cherub Choir - The Cherub Choir is for the youngest singers up to ages 6-Grade 4. Students in Grade 4 will have the option of doubling in the Youth Choir, or staying in the Cherub Choir exclusively. This ensemble introduces children to the musical world and gives them exciting experiences singing and playing instruments such as hand chimes. This ensemble will likely meet Sundays after worship, with a schedule TBA by the participants.

Youth Choir- The Youth Choir consists of older children Grades 5-12. In Grade 8 the students may elect to double in the Sanctuary Choir, or staying in the Youth Choir exclusively. This choir continues vocal and musical development and tackles more challenging and complex repertoire. This ensemble rehearses Sundays after worship from approximately 11:30-12:00. This ensemble performs the Children’s Offertory on Sundays approximately once a month and on Christmas, Easter, and Children’s Sundays.

Sanctuary Choir- This group is the main vocal ensemble of the church. It consists of older matured singers who perform a varied repertoire of three- and four-part music. They perform frequently on Sundays during various points in the service. They also perform Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, Christmas Walk and sometimes other moments during the year. They rehearse regularly on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 and gather on Sunday mornings at 9:15.

Hand bell Choir- The hand bell choir is a consortium of multi-age musicians playing hand . Each person plays one or two hand bells as part of a larger unit. This ensemble is open to grades 4 and up. Music reading is not required, but will be taught as part of rehearsal in order to ensure success. This ensemble rehearses 7:30-8:30 on Tuesday nights.

The goal of the program ultimately is for the children to progress to the Sanctuary Choir. The Music Director will manage the “transition” years to ensure adequate individual preparation as well as upholding the high standards of each ensemble.

The Music Director also offers private music instruction for church members of all ages. The fee for this (which exists outside the Music Director’s contract and is NOT a service of TCC) is $25 for the half hour, $35 for 45 minutes and $45 for an hour. Please contact the Music Director, directly to make arrangements.

Patience is 17 years old and lives in the town of Mukono in the Mukono region of Uganda. For the past year, Patience has been working hard to manage her clothing sales' business. In the future, Patience hopes to be able to expand her business.

THE TERRYVILLE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH’S

175 TH ANNIVERSARY Ray Douyard, Co-Chairman Richard Foote, Co-Chairman

This is a summary of the activities that have taken place in the first six months of 2013.

JANUARY: we honored the clergy who have served our church as a permanent minister or as an interim-minister. In reviewing papers we have found letters from the early ministers in their own handwriting and they are dated….

FEBRUARY: brought the Lincoln Sermon that was given by Rev. E.M. Wright on the Sunday after President Lincoln was assassinated. Rev. Zack gave part of the sermon.

MARCH: brought a pictorial showing of the church family as they were involved in the various ministries as part of the of the life of our church. Over 500 pictures were posted throughout the Social Hal following the Church Service.

APRIL: the rededication of the church. It was a wonderful service with several former ministers present. The Anniversary Committee had a full exhibit covering the period of the organization of our church to the present time. The major attraction was a rocking chair, owned by Dick Foote, that was made by Riley Scott who was the builder of the original church.

MAY: brought to mind the Veterans who have served our country in war and in peace. The church participated in the Memorial Day Parade here in Terryville. A banner was carried and the flowered cross followed by a truck with children and adults.

A cemetery walk was also organized by Mary Alice Wilbanks. This was well attended even after having to be postponed once because of weather.

JUNE: t his month brought a music program prepared by our Director of Music, Dan Brownell. It has been many years since such a program has been presented and it was very well received. Members of the church brought their wedding pictures and they were on display during the social hour after church.

16 The Committee in reviewing papers came across the following information in a hand written letter dated January 21, 1838 to Dr. Woosley, President of Yale College. The writer, Charles Henry Porter, a student at Yale College, was asking if he could continue his stay in Terryville until the end of the month. While in Terryville, Mr. Porter was signing up members to the new church. He was granted the time and he spent the entire month with meetings and bringing in new members. Following are some facts about Mr. Porter: Charles Henry Porter was born August 11, 1811 and died September 26, 1841. He graduated Yale College in 1939 and died while a student in Divinity School. He is buried in Grove St. Cemetery in New Haven, CT.

Mr. Porter kept a diary when he started school at Yale College. It is quite lengthy and is very detailed as to his relations with family and friends. He tells of meetings in the afternoons as well as in the evening, spreading the Word of God. During the month of January he signed up 39 individuals as members of the new church. Along with the 49 members that left Plymouth this gave a total of 88 members since organizing o January 2, 1838.

In a letter dated, February 7, 1838, he tells of his work in Terryville and how pleased he was with the progress in the formation of the new church.

The Committee would like to thank everyone for their donations of articles and objects that will be retained and added to the church history.
