Universitas Sumatera Utara CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of The Study

Literature is a term used to describe written or spoken material. Literature describes anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination.

Literature represents a language or a people : culture and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or cultural artifact. According to Roberts and Hendry E. Jacobs and Robert Edgar V (1995:1).

that literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, analyze and advocate ideas. Literature enables us torecognize human morality, dream, and struggle in difference ways, time and situations that we would never otherwise know.

Three important branches of literature : novel, poetry and drama. One of the important will be discussed is Novel. The term of novel can be defined as a literary composition. Some novels are fiction and some are based on true stories.

In Rees’ (1973:106) English Literature, The Shorter Oxford Dictionary stated that novel is a fictitious prose narrative of considerate length in which characters and action representative of real life are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexity.

According to John Peck and Martin Coyle (1947:102) ; Novel is a long narrative of art work with a great amount of detail on every page. Novel present all the complicating facts that need to be taken into account before it can reach any sort of judgment.

1

Universitas Sumatera Utara Nowadays , novel have a lot of kinds namely romance, comedy, mistery, advanture, and historical. The writer uses advanture novel, the tittle is THE

THREE MUSKETEERS to accomplished his paper. The novel that the writer uses is talk about the story begins with telling of a young gascon namely D'Artagnan who left his home and traveled to with the aim to be Musketeers.

Musketeers is a bodyguard of the King who was formed in 1622 under the leadership of Louis XIII. They served as King's guards when outside of the

Palace. D'Artagnan brought his father's letter of introduction to Monsieur

D'Treville to make it easier for him to join Musketri, but instead of succeeding in submitting his letter, D'Artagnan actually lost his letter midway through a fascination with a mysterious man. Just out of one problem, he was again in trouble. This time he had to duel with three men almost simultaneously. But the duel is null and D'Artagnan actually get three new friends he knows as Trio

Musketri, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. So That is the summary or short story about the novel that the writer to fullfill his paper.

The writer will discribe about the main character of this novel there are

Athos, Aramis, Porthos. So that are the main charachters that the writer uses to complate his paper and to find out more complately about the characters

1.3 . The Scope of Study

There are so many important aspects can be discused in this paper. But In writing this paper, the writer only foccus about one of the intrinsic element of the novel that is talk about the description of main charachters in alexandre dumas novel’the three musketeers. And only foccuses to discussed about four main charachters namely Athos, Aramis, Porthos. Only from those charachters the writer want to discribe it.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Novel

A novel is a narrative kind of writing which is focused on the sequence of events, time, and solution. It’s contained more than a thousand words and has the aspect of novel; they are plot, character, theme and setting. According to Peck

(1984: 104) a novel is an extended and actions of a period of time. Novelist frequently focused on the tension between individuals and the society. It means that I can know an important event in society and in a country through a novel. A novel is a long narrative in literary prose. The genre has historical roots both in the fields of the medieval and early modern romance and in the tradition of the novella. The latter supplied the present generic term in the late 18th century.

Novel is an extended fiction, phrase narrative dealing with human charact er and actions of period of time. Naturally, a novel has intrinsic and extrinsic novel. In this thesis the focused of the analysis is character as one of the intrinsic element of a novel.

According to William Harmon in his book A Handbook to Literature stated that Novel is used in its broadest sense to designate any extended fictional narrative almost always in prose. In practice, however, its use is customarily restricted to narrative in which the representation of character occurs either in a static condition or in the process of development as the result of events or actions.

5

Universitas Sumatera Utara 2.2 Character

Character is one of important parts of novel works such as novel. The people in a novel are referred to as characters. Characters are representative of real life, such as human life, hope, sadness, happy, and others which deal with real life. According to Reader and Woods (1987:51) that, “ The characters in a good novel are interesting, exciting, convincing, complex and realistic. If the author has created a particularly genius or individualistic character, than we, as readers, will find that character interesting regardless of whether or not we sympathize with him or her.” Character is very important in real-made creation of literary works such as novel, drama or even some of poems. The nature of character presentation gives a positive impact for readers to find out what is going on and what is it for. According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle deduces that character is one of six qualitative parts of Athenian tragedy and one of the three objects that it represents. He knows that character not to denote a fictional person, but the quality of the person acting in the story and reacting to its situations.

In literature, characters guide readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and ponder themes. The art of creating characters, as practiced by actors or writers, has been called characterization. The study of a character requires an analysis of its relations with all of the other characters in the work.

The relation between characters and the action of the story shifts historically, often miming shifts in society and its ideas about human individuality, self- determination, and the social order.

6

Universitas Sumatera Utara The main character is called the protagonist and the villain is called the antagonist. The terms protagonist and main character are variously defined and, depending on the source, may denote different concepts. In fiction, the story of the protagonist may be told from the perspective of a different character. An example would be a narrator who relates the fate of several protagonists, perhaps as prominent figures recalled in a biographical perspective, the protagonist in a narrative is also the same person as the focal character, though the two terms are distinct. Excitement and intrigue alone is what the audience feels toward a focal character, while a sense of empathy about the character's objectives and emotions is what the audience feels toward the protagonist. Although the protagonist is often referred to as the "good guy", it is entirely possible for a story's protagonist to be the clear villain, or antihero, of the piece. The antagonist may be the story's hero; for example, where the protagonist is a criminal, the antagonist could be a law enforcement agent that tries to capture him.

2.2.1 Main Character and Peripheral Character

Main character is the character that often appears in the almost each event and main character is the important and the special character, so that we fell is so dominates the story. In certain novel, the main character always appears in almost each event and can be found in each page of the novel. When we read a novel or any other literary work, we will usually deal with some character. There is character that classified as an important character and showed in the story continuously. In this case, main character has always related with other character.

7

Universitas Sumatera Utara Peripheral character is the character that appears once or sometimes in a novel, and may be relatively in short portion. It is called peripheral character often provide, support, and illuminate the protagonist (as Nugriyantoro, Burhan, states in his book Teori Pengkajian Fiksi ).

2.2.2 Protagonist Character and Antagonist Character

Based on the function of appearance, characters are distinguished into protagonist character and antagonist character.

Protagonist character is the most favorite character by the readers and popularly called hero. Readers often identified themselves with certain characters, giving sympathy and empathy to protagonist character. Because it presents something which is conform to the readers’ point of view, norms manifestation, and value. In short, all the things that the character felt, thought, and done, it all represents the readers.

Antagonist character is stated to be the opposite of protagonist character directly or indirectly, physically or psychologically. In other words, this character gives a conflict to story.

2.2.3 Round character and Flat character

Round character is a character who shows many different facets ; often presented in depth and with great detail. The basic of trait of round character are that they recognized, change with, or adjust to circumstances. The round character

–usually the main figure in a story –profits from experience and undergoes a change or alteration, which may be shown in (1) an action or actions, (2) the realization of new strength and therefore the affirmation of previous decisions, (3)

8

Universitas Sumatera Utara the acceptance of a new condition, or (4) the discovery of unrecognized truths.(Robert,2003:133). Because round of they usually play a major role in a story.

Round characters are often called the hero or heroine. Many main characters are anything but heroic, however, and it is therefore preferable to use the more neutral word protagonist. The protagonist is central to the action, moves against an antagonist, and exhibits the ability to adapt to new circumstances. To the degree that around characters are both individual and sometimes unpredictable, and because they undergo change or growth, they are dynamic.

Flat character is a character who usually has only one outstanding trait or feature. In contrast, flat characters do not grow. They remain the same because they may be stupid or insensitive or lacking in knowledge or insight. They end where they begin and are static, not dynamic. But flat characters are not therefore worthless, for they usually highlight the development of the round characters.

2.2.4 Typical and Neutral Character

Based on the reflection of the character to the group of human, character can be distinguished into typical character and neutral character.

Typical character is a character which is individually less presented, but more of its works or nationality is presented, or some other things that possibly more represent. It is a description and reflection or reference of one or group of people as a part of one institute which exist in the real life.

Neutral character is a character that exists only for the story itself. It is an imaginary that lives and exists only in fiction. He presents or presented for the

9

Universitas Sumatera Utara story or even as the storyteller, or the main character. His existence does not to represent or to describe something outside him, someone outside of his real life.

Universitas Sumatera Utara CHAPTER III

THE DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTER

3.1 Arthos

Athos is one of three Musketeers. He is the oldest of his two friends

Porthos and Arimis, therefore he has a more mature nature than his two friends.

Because of his adult figure he became a leader in his group he made plans that they would do. Athos is also an unyielding, persistent and tough man. Behind his harshness he saves his love story. “Athos, who continued to suffer severely from his wound, althought it had again been dressed by M, de Treville’s surgeon,

11

Universitas Sumatera Utara had seated himself on alarge stone where he awaited his adversary with that air of calmness and dignity which never forsook.approached, he arose, and politely advanced some steps to meet him.” (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 42)

“Athos was, therefore , a very extraordinary man and yet , this nature so disting , this creature so beautiful, this essence so fine, was seen to turn insenbily towards a material life, as old me often tend to physical and moral imbelicility. (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 245)

3.2 Porthos

Porthos the most mundane Porthos of the three musketeers, Porthos is very proud of his fine worldly and good physical appearance, which he shows his best advantage by dressing up to impress the women of society, who seem to appreciate his good looks and looks. Court attention He is devoted to good food and comfortable environment. Porthos has enormous strength from his three companions, hence porthos relies on his great power to conquer his opponent, porthos has a flirty nature in women.

12

Universitas Sumatera Utara “Porthos and biscarrat alone remained fighting, porthos, whilst fighting, indulged himself in a thousand fantastic jests and humours, asking biscarrat what time of day it was , and congrutulating him on the company his brother had just obtained in the regiment of navarre. This jesting however, gained him no advantage : for biscarrat was one of those indomitable spirit who die, but do not surrender.it was time, however, to stop the fight, as the guard might arrive, and arrest all the combatans, whether wounded or not, what ever royalist or cacardinalists.” (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 48,49)

’’as soon as porthos saw this , he one more curled his moustache again elongated his imperial, and the began to make signals to a fair lady who was near the choir, and who was not only a fair lady, but undoubtedly a lady of some consequence for she had behind her a little negro boy, who had carried the cushion on which she knelt, and a waiting-woman, who carried the coroneted bag in which she brought her mass-book. (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 271)

“Porthos slowly masticated his fowls wing he also drank half a glass of this cherised wine, which he recognised as montreuil, whilst master coquenard sighed as he saw swallow it neat.” (293)

3.3 Aramis

A young , one of the Big Three. Aramis is a handsome, quiet and somewhat foppish young man, his soul is very calm in the face of trouble. He constantly protests that he is only temporarily at , and that one day he will now return to the Church to pursue the real call. Aramis has a mysterious mistress, Madame de Chevreuse, a noble lady, whose existence and identity she

13

Universitas Sumatera Utara tries to defend from her friends. Aramis has his dexterity and disguise skills checking all the state of the opposite area of all towers and roofs.

“is it not so, aramis? Inquired porthos, turning to another

musketeer.”

“The person thus appealed to formed a perfect contrast to the one

who thus questioned him , and who designated him by the name of

aramis.” (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 22)

“Aramis was not angry this time, but he put on a most modest air, and said, affectedly : my dear fellow do not forget that i wish to enter the church, and that in fly from all worldly things. that handkerchief was not a love-token for me, but was left by mistake at my house by one of my friends.”

“Aramis, suffering at once in mind and body, had at length fixed his thoughts and eyes upon religion; and he had regarded, as a warning from heaven, the double accident which had befallen him- that is to say, the sudden disappearance of his mistress, and the wound in his shoulder.” (Alexandre Dumas 1844 : 69)

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusions

In Alexandre Dumas’ Novel, The , the main character are

Athos, Porthos and Aramis. All of them have different character.

Universitas Sumatera Utara APPENDICES

A. Biography of Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas, the author of The Three Musketeers and The Count of

Monte Cristo, among scores of other novels, was born on July 24, 1802. His father was somewhat of an adventurer-soldier, a mulatto, and was not a favorite of

Napoleon because of his staunch republicanism. Therefore, on his father's death in

1806, when Alexandre was only four, the family was left in rather severe financial straits. The young boy's formal education was scanty, most of it provided by a priest, and as soon as he could qualify, Alexandre entered the services of a lawyer.

As he grew older, he became close friends with the son of an exiled Swedish nobleman, and the two of them began to dabble in vaudeville enterprises. Later, as a young man, Dumas went to Paris and secured a position as a clerk to the Duc d'Orleans; this was a marvelous stroke of good fortune, for the Duc would soon

18

Universitas Sumatera Utara become king, and Dumas would write a superb Memoir about his many and varied mishaps while he was employed by the future king.

At the same time, Dumas and his old friend, Leuven, produced several melodramas. When he was twenty-two, however, a melodrama of his own making presented itself: Dumas found himself the father of an illegitimate son by a dressmaker, Marie Labay; when the boy was seven, Dumas went to court to get custody of him, and succeeded.

Professionally, this was an extremely happy time for Dumas; for six years, he and Leuven had been collaborating on plays, and their legitimate dramas had been staged to much popular acclaim. Then in 1829, Dumas' Henri III et sa cour

(Henry III and His Court) was produced; it was Dumas' first spectacular triumph.

The Duc was so fond of it that he appointed Dumas the librarian of the Palais

Royal.

The Revolution of 1830 interrupted Dumas' playwriting, and for a pleasant and amusing account of these years, one should consult Dumas' Memoirs for many rich and humorous anecdotes (not worrying unduly about the degree of truth in them, of course). Then, because Dumas was implicated in some "irregularities" during a noted French general's funeral, he suddenly decided to "tour"

Switzerland; as a result, we have another long series of delightful Memoirs, this time issued as travel books. It should be noted, though, that Dumas always retained his affectionate relationship with the Duc, and that he eventually returned to , where he composed many first-rate, long-running plays.

19

Universitas Sumatera Utara Dumas' well-known collaboration with began in 1837 and resulted in a series of historical novels in which Dumas hoped to reconstruct the major events of French history. For example, the Three Musketeers are united in order to defend the honor of against Richelieu. This particular novel in the series was so popular that Dumas immediately composed two sequels and, by coincidence, The Count of Monte Cristo was also written during this same period, with the help of collaborators.

In fact, Dumas, with the aid of collaborators, turned out so much fiction and miscellaneous writing that it has been remarked that "No one has ever read the whole of Dumas, not even himself." We know now, however, that Dumas' assistants only provided him with rough plotlines and suggested incidents to him.

He himself filled in the outlines, and all of his novels' manuscripts are in his handwriting.

Like so many creative and productive men, Dumas' life ended in a series of personal and financial tragedies. He built a strangely beautiful and impressive

French Gothic, English Renaissance hybrid mansion and filled it with a multitude of scavenger-friends; both home and hangers-on were tremendous drains on his purse, as was the construction and upkeep of his own theater, the Theatre

Historique, built specifically for the performance of his own plays.

In 1851, Dumas moved to Brussels, as much for his political advantage as it was to escape creditors — despite the 1,200 volumes which bore his name —

20

Universitas Sumatera Utara and he died not long after a scandalous liaison with an American circus girl, a situation that he might well have chosen as a fictional framework for his demise.

Dumas' son, , is remembered today chiefly for his first novel, The Lady of the Camellias, which was the basis for the libretto of

Verdi's opera , as well as for the plot of one of Hollywood's classic films, Camille, starring Greta Garbo.

21

Universitas Sumatera Utara B. Summary of Novel

In Venice, the Three Musketeers Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray

Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), with the help of Athos' lover,

(), steal airship blueprints made by Leonardo da Vinci. However, they are betrayed by Milady, who gives the blueprints to the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando

Bloom). Upon returning to France, the Musketeers are forced to disband by Cardinal

Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) for their failure.

One year later, the young D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) leaves for Paris in hopes of becoming a Musketeer, like his father once was, only to learn that they no longer exist. D'Artagnan ends up challenging Captain Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen), the leader of Richelieu's guard, to a duel after being offended by him, but Rochefort merely shoots him while he's distracted. In an attempt to get revenge, D'Artagnan offends

Athos, Porthos and Aramis for petty reasons, and schedules duels with each of them, at the same day and at the same place, but in different times, not knowing who they are.

Before they can duel, however, D'Artagnan and the Musketeers are attacked by the guards for breaking the law by having a public duel. They fight the soldiers off, at which point D'Artagnan discovers their true identities, but end up being captured and brought before the young King Louis XIII (Freddie Fox) and his wife, Queen Anne (Juno Temple).

Richelieu attempts to convince them to execute the four prisoners, but they are too impressed, and congratulate them instead, much to Richelieu's anger.

Later, Richelieu meets with Milady, who is actually working for him. He orders her to plant false love letters among Queen Anne's possessions and steal Queen Anne's

22

Universitas Sumatera Utara diamond necklace and hide it in the Tower of London with the objective of framing

Queen Anne of having an affair with the Duke of Buckingham, who is in France on behalf of the King of England, and who has built a fully armed airship using the designs stolen from the Musketeers. The affair would force King Louis to execute Queen Anne and declare war on England. At this point, the people would demand a more experienced leader for the country: Richelieu himself. Before leaving, Milady demands that Richelieu gives her an authorization declaring that she was working on behalf of France's best interests.

However, Queen Anne's lady-in-waiting Constance Bonacieux (Gabriella Wilde) discovers his plan and pleads with the Musketeers to stop Richelieu. They follow Milady and Buckingham to London, while Constance is kidnapped by Rochefort for helping the

Musketeers to escape from him. Meanwhile, King Louis finds the false letters and is advised by Richelieu to set up a ball in which Queen Anne would be forced to wear the necklace. If she doesn't, then her affair is real, and there will be war.

In London, Milady warns Buckingham of the Musketeers arrival, claiming that they want revenge for being outsmarted by Buckingham one year prior. Buckingham captures

D'Artagnan and prepares to interrogate him when D'Artagnan reveals that he was acting as a decoy to allow the Musketeers to steal Buckingham's airship. They rescue

D'Artagnan and capture Milady, who gives them the authorization in an attempt to have her life spared. Upon realizing she failed, she jumps out of the airship into the English

Channel.

The Musketeers recover the necklace and return to Paris, only to be attacked by

Rochefort, piloting an airship secretly built by Richelieu, who was given copies of Da

23

Universitas Sumatera Utara Vinci's blueprints by Milady. Rochefort feigns an attempt to exchange Constance for the necklace in order to capture D'Artagnan, but the Musketeers come to his rescue and the two ships crash in the Notre Dame Cathedral, where D'Artagnan fights and defeats

Rochefort, rescuing Constance, who returns the necklace to Queen Anne.

The Musketeers arrive at the ball and, for the sake of King Louis' and his people, lie by saying that Rochefort was trying to sabotage an airship that Richelieu built for them, for the purpose of identifying a traitor. To convince King Louis, Athos presents Milady's authorization, which King Louis accepts. Richelieu, satisfied, offers the Musketeers a place in his army, but they refuse, which infuriates Richelieu, who swears revenge.

Meanwhile, at sea, Milady is rescued by Buckingham, who reveals that he intents to avenge her and destroy the Musketeers. It is revealed that Buckingham is advancing towards France with a massive fleet of airships and sea-faring ships.
