THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Alexandre Dumas THE AUTHOR Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was born in a small French village northeast of Paris. His father had been a general under Napoleon, and his paternal grandfather had lived in Haiti and had married a former slave woman there, thus making Dumas what was called a quadroon. Napoleon and his father had parted on bad terms, with Dumas’ father being owed a large sum of money; the failure to pay this debt left the family poor and struggling, though the younger Dumas remained an admirer of the French emperor. Young Dumas moved to Paris in 1823 and took a job as a clerk to the Duke of Orleans (later to become King Louis Philippe), but soon began writing plays. Though his plays were successful and he made quite a handsome living from them, his profligate lifestyle (both financially and sexually) kept him constantly on the edge of bankruptcy. He played an active role in the revolution of 1830, and then turned to writing novels. As was the case with Dickens in England, his books were published in cheap newspapers in serial form. Dumas proved able to crank out popular stories at an amazing rate, and soon became the most famous writer in France. Among his works are The Three Musketeers (1844), The Count of Monte Cristo (1845), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1850). Dumas’ novels tend to be long and full of flowery description (some cynics suggest that this is because he was paid by the word), and for this reason often appear today in the form of abridged translations (if you ever doubt the value of such an approach, take a look at the unabridged version of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables sometime). -

Chapel Hill 2008 Approved by: Michele Rivkin-Fish Peter Redfield Karla Slocum ©2008 Laura Rose Wagner ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT LAURA WAGNER : When the One Who Bears the Scars is the One Who Strikes the Blow: History, Human Rights, and Haiti’s Restavèks (Under the direction of Michele Rivkin-Fish and Peter Redfield) The practice of keeping restavèks , or unpaid domestic child laborers, in Haiti has come under scrutiny by both human rights activists and journalists, many of whom describe it as a form of slavery. While this description is not entirely inaccurate and may also be useful, it fails to reflect the variability of treatment of restavèks , the complex ways in which power is exercised, the ways in which people occupy “oppressor” and “oppressed” roles simultaneously, the various local understandings of restavèk relationships and human rights, and the particular historical meanings and memories attached to slavery in Haiti. “I wait for me”: Visualizing the Absence of the Haitian Revolution in Cinematic Text By Jude Ulysse A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2017 ABSTRACT “I wait for me” Visualizing the Absence of the Haitian Revolution in Cinematic Text Doctor of Philosophy Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2017 In this thesis I explore the memory of the Haitian Revolution in film. I expose the colonialist traditions of selective memory, the ones that determine which histories deserve the attention of professional historians, philosophers, novelists, artists and filmmakers. In addition to their capacity to comfort and entertain, films also serve to inform, shape and influence public consciousness. Central to the thesis, therefore, is an analysis of contemporary filmic representations and denials of Haiti and the Haitian Revolution. I employ a research design that examines the relationship between depictions of Haiti and the country’s colonial experience, as well as the revolution that reshaped that experience. I address two main questions related to the revolution and its connection to the age of modernity. The first concerns an examination of how Haiti has contributed to the production of modernity while the second investigates what it means to remove Haiti from this production of modernity. I aim to unsettle the hegemonic understanding of modernity as the sole creation of the West. The thrust of my argument is that the Haitian Revolution created the space where a re-articulation of the human could be possible. -

Introduction: 100 Years of Independence In January of 1904, Haiti celebrated its one hundredth year of independence. This was truly a remarkable occasion – land that was once prized by European powers as the pinnacle of plantation slave colonies had been made into a sovereign state by a slave army, just a few years after America won independence from Britain. Haiti was the result of a unique slave revolution and it was the world‟s first black republic. Haitian President Nord Alexis marked the anniversary by commissioning a new national anthem; La Dessalinienne, named after ex-slave General Jean-Jacques Dessalines, reminds Haitians to always remember their history and, above all, to remain united as a people. Not all Haitians held such positive views of their country‟s fledgling century. Among those who had been disillusioned by one hundred years of independent Haiti was Dr. Rosalvo Bobo, who would go on to lead the Caco rebellion a decade later that prompted American military intervention. Present Situation: Jean-Jacques Dessalines Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806) was an important military and political leader during the Haitian revolution and the first president and emperor of Haiti following their independence in 1804. Under Dessalines, Haiti became the first new-world country to permanently abolish slavery. During the Haitian Revolution1 Born into slavery2, Dessalines was a field hand until he joined a massive slave rebellion in 1791 that would sprawl into the Haitian revolution.
