  • Quarterly Report January to March 2019
Quarterly Report January to March 2019 REPORT ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) recently released a report on child sexual abuse and exploitation, based on a study of the approach which 40 countries took to such offences. South Africa was one of the countries included in the study. It ranked 15th out of 40 for its measures to protect children against sexual abuse and exploitation, according to an index the EIU developed. We can, and we must, protect children from all forms of sexual abuse and exploitation in all settings. Children deserve nothing less. Here are 10 things that emerged from the report, titled Out of the Shadows. 1) Just over half (21) of the 40 countries analysed have legal protections for boys within their child rape laws. 868 Children 2) Sexual abuse is happening everywhere, regardless of a assisted country's socio-economic status or its citizens' quality of life. 3) Sexual abuse is increasingly enabled by the internet but at the FOR FREE same time, an experimental internet program is "crawling" the web to find abusive and exploitative images of children to have Jan to March them reported and removed. 4) Children with disabilities, those displaced through trafficking or forced migration, those living in care institutions and those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender can be especially vulnerable. 5) At household and community level, chaotic lifestyles resulting from neglect, alcohol and substance abuse are linked to most forms of violence against and among children. 1 6) The absence of protective relationships and environments are factors that are often predictive of sexual violence against children across cultures.

  • Dear Curronians Greetings to One and All from a Much Needed Glorious
Dear Curronians Greetings to one and all from a much needed glorious, wet and wonderful week. Our dams are filling up, and so too the reservoirs of knowledge acquired by your children. The past weeks of the first term have witnessed frenetic activity in all the spheres of school endeavour. The Grade 8 learners have been wholly inducted as High School learners who are now completely acquainted with the demands of High School academics, pace, rhythm and expectations. Judging from the Summer Dance one or two Fridays ago, they seem to have fitted right in, enjoying good, clean and safe fun under the watchful eyes of staff. Not only did the girls look and behave as young ladies should, but the boys conducted themselves as young gentlemen. Perhaps I’m too old fashioned, but it amazed me to witness how the young folk were able to dance to a genre of music with seemingly no melody and a rhythm that only they can find. Nevertheless, our in-house DJ ‘did his thing’ much to the applause and delight of his willing followers, echoing the launch of a commercial song on iTunes by our talented young musicians. Well done to the organisers, staff and children. Curro Aurora is the bastion of a special, precious atmosphere in the form of loving care, embraced in a respectful environment of nourishing educational opportunity. Curro Aurora will preserve, guard and protect this phenomenon. This includes learner deportment, manners and respect for self, peers, staff, visitors and their environment. In acquiescence of the non-negotiable trait of respect of the school Code of Conduct, parents and learners are to note that the value and status of any school lies in the hands of each individual learner.
