  • History of Scotch Whiskey
Scotch Whiskey The Gaelic "usquebaugh", meaning "Water of Life", phonetically became "usky" and then "whisky" in English. However it is known, Scotch whisky, Scotch or Whisky (as opposed to whiskey), it has captivated a global market. Scotland has internationally protected the term "Scotch". For a whisky to be labeled Scotch it has to be produced in Scotland. If it is to be called Scotch, it cannot be produced in England, Wales, Ireland, America or anywhere else. Excellent whiskies are made by similar methods in other countries, notably Japan, but they cannot be called Scotches. They are most often referred to as "whiskey". While they might be splendid whiskies, they do not captivate the tastes of Scotland. "Eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae" The entry above appeared in the Exchequer Rolls as long ago as 1494 and appears to be the earliest documented record of distilling in Scotland. This was sufficient to produce almost 1500 bottles, and it becomes clear that distilling was already a well-established practice. Legend would have it that St Patrick introduced distilling to Ireland in the fifth century AD and that the secrets traveled with the Dalriadic Scots when they arrived in Kintyre around AD500. St Patrick acquired the knowledge in Spain and France, countries that might have known the art of distilling at that time. The distilling process was originally applied to perfume, then to wine, and finally adapted to fermented mashes of cereals in countries where grapes were not plentiful. The spirit was universally termed aqua vitae ('water of life') and was commonly made in monasteries, and chiefly used for medicinal purposes, being prescribed for the preservation of health, the prolongation of life, and for the relief of colic, palsy and even smallpox.

The Whisky Handbook Scotch Whisky So, where did the name ‘Whisky’ come from? The Latin aqua vitae (water of life), from which we get the Gaelic "uisge beatha" (pronounced weshka bay), phonetically became "usky" and then "whisky" in English. Scotland has internationally protected the term "Scotch". For a whisky to be labelled Scotch it has to be produced in Scotland. If it is to be called Scotch, it can’t be produced in England, Wales, Ireland, America or anywhere else. Excellent whiskies are made by similar methods in other countries, notably Japan, but they are not Scotch. "Eight bolls of malt to Friar John Cor wherewith to make aqua vitae" The first mention of ‘malt’ appeared in the Exchequer Rolls as long ago as 1494. It’s the earliest documented record of distilling in Scotland. Legend suggests that St Patrick introduced distilling to Ireland in the fifth century AD and that the secrets travelled with the Dalriadic Scots when they arrived on the Kintyre peninsula of Scotland around AD500. Distilling was originally used to make perfumes and alcohol for various uses, and evolved to use fermented mashes of grain. The spirit was universally called ‘aqua vitae’ ('water of life') and was often made in monasteries as an early medicine. It was prescribed for the prolonging of life, for the relief of colic, palsy and even smallpox. King James IV (1488-1513) has been documented as liking 'ardent spirits'. He went to Dundee in 1506, where he paid the local barber for a supply of aqua vitae for the king's pleasure.

  • What Is Scotch Whisky? Author: Zveaghintev Roman Ling. Cons
What is Scotch Whisky? Author: Zveaghintev Roman Ling. cons.: A. Jechiu Scotch whisky is whisky made in Scotland. Originally known as “Aqua vitae” or “water of life” for it’s healing properties, the first recorded reference to the substance is found in the Scottish Exchequer Rolls of 1494. This distilled beverage was used as a treatment for all kinds of ailments, with many of its users noticing the warm, calming sensation upon “treatment” [1]. There are two major categories, single and blended. Single means that all of the product is from a single distillery, while Blended means that the product is composed of whiskies from two or more distilleries. Traditional practices define five types: Single malt whisky Blended grain whisky Single grain whisky Blended Scotch whisky Blended malt whisky The production process of Scotch whisky is surprisingly simple. It involves malting, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation. Malting - the process of turning barley into malt, Barley is soaked or ―steeped‖ in water, drained, then spread out on the malting floor to germinate. Mashing - the dried malt is then ground into a course flour with the consistency of oatmeal, called ―grist.‖ The grist is then mixed with hot water and pumped into a mash tun. In the mash tun, the water and ground malt is mixed. This sugary liquid is called ―wort.‖ Fermentation – the wort is combined with yeast and allowed to ferment. The length of fermentation generally takes about two days. The resulting liquid is anywhere from 5-8% alcohol by volume and is called ―wash.‖ 50 Distillation – the wash is distilled by separating the water from the alcohol by boiling the wash, collecting the evaporated alcohol which condenses at the top and collecting it in a condenser.

Multiple regression analysis is used to model the relationship between the identified covariates that are believed to impact the price of whisky. The optimal marketing strategy for whisky producers in the regions Islay and Camp- beltown are discussed. This analysis is based on the Marketing Mix. Furthermore, a Porter's five forces analysis, focusing on the regions Campeltown and Islay, is exam- ined. Finally the findings are summarised in a marketing strategy recommendation for producers in the regions Campbeltown and Islay. The result from the regression analysis shows that the covariates alcohol content and regions are affecting price the most. The small regions Islay and Campbeltown, with few distilleries, have a strong positive impact on price while whisky from unspecified regions in Scotland have a negative impact on price. The alcohol content has a positive, non-linear, impact on price.
