Limitations of space have prevented me from attempting to write a detailed history of the Spanish drama before Lope de Vega, but I have tried to give at least an outline of the de- velopment of dramatic literature in that period. I am fully aware of the fact that the picture 'which I present is incomplete,, but it is my hope that I have succeeded in presenting here the results of the studies of my many predecessors, as well as of my own reading, and that this little book will serve as a- starting-point for further investigation in a subject that offers- so much of interest. I have limited myself to a consideration of the drama in the Spanish language, and have, therefore, paid little attention toi the plays of that period written in Catalan and Valencian. With considerable regret, I have included only the Castilian plays of Gil Vicente, and the plays in which the Castilian; element seems to predominate, and I have not even touched upon the many disputed points in the biography of the great Portuguese poet. I wish to express my gratitude to my friend and colleague, Professor Hugo A. Rennert, for his kindness in reading my manuscript. To the study of the origins of the medieval litur- gical drama, Castilian-speaking portions of the Peninsula con- tribute only an eleventh or twelfth-century Christmas trope 1 of a primitive type from Huesca, and two eleventh-century 2 Easter tropes from Silos. In spite of this noteworthy lack of liturgical texts, Spanish literature may claim the honor of possessing in the Auto de los Reyes Magos one of the earliest, if not the earliest reli- gious play in a modern tongue. This composition, consisting of 146 or 147 lines, is contained in a manuscript of the Chapter Library of Toledo, now preserved at the National Library of Madrid, and on the basis of linguistic and scribal considera- tions may be ascribed to the middle of the twelfth century. It was probably performed in some church in the city of Toledo to celebrate the festival of the Epiphany. If its source is really one of these Latin texts, the author derived from it merely the arrangement of incidents, and treated his material with independence, originality and dramatic sense. Instead of the five lines recited by the Magi, in several of the liturgical texts, before their meeting with Herod, we find three monologues in the Spanish play, amounting to fifty-one lines, in which the author attempts to give some individuality to the Wise Kings by describing their doubts as to whether the new star in the heavens really betokens the Saviour's birth. The following scene, in which the Magi confer with one another concerning the meaning of the star, is not found in any liturgical text. Furthermore, the gifts of the Magi are spoken of as a means to identify the Christ Child. He will choose gold if a king of this world, myrrh if he is a mortal man and incense if he is King of Heaven. These occur in the Hymnus Epiphaniae of Pruden- 1 tius, a few stanzas of which were included in the Breviary. In the third scene they appear before Herod who, on learn- ing the object of their quest, bids them go and search for the new King, and when they have found Him, to bring him word again so that he may go and worship also. When left alone, Herod becomes the ranting tyrant who appears in so many later plays and summons his scribes and astrologers to in- terpret for him this mystery. They fall into a dispute and the play breaks off abruptly. We may assume that at least one scene, namely, the Adoration of the Christ Child by the Magi, has been lost. Like the Old French and Latin pieces of like character, it has a rich metrical structure with ennea- syllabic and heptasyllabic verses and Alexandrines as the pre- vailing measures. 1 A. THE SPANISH DRAMA BEFORE ENCINA 1 1 An oft-quoted law of the Siete Partidas* (1256-1263) gives us valuable information concerning religious plays in Spain about the middle of the thirteenth century. After prohi- biting certain abuses that will be discussed later, the law expressly declares that members of the clergy are permitted to present (faser) plays (representaciones} that deal with the birth of Jesus and the announcement of the angel to the shep- herds, the Adoration of the Magi and the Resurrection. Such Christmas, Epiphany and Easter plays were allowed with reasonable restrictions, and their function as a vehicle of religious instruction is clearly recognized. The words of the text indicate that these plays contained dialogue and were accompanied by a crude attempt at acting, and the ban laid upon performances in small towns or for the sake of gain, seems to prove that they were composed in Spanish. The history of the religious drama during the two hundred years that followed upon the Siete Partidas is shrouded in al- most complete obscurity. Not a single Castilian play is known to have been composed during those two centuries that wit- nessed the unfolding and culmination of the English miracle plays and the French miracles and mysteres. Furthermore, even the few allusions to dramatic performances during that period that have been discovered, refer almost entirely to Catalan and Valencian territory. For example, a document of the year 1360 informs us that it was customary for the canons of the Cathedral of Gerona to perform on Easter a 2- play called Las ires Marias. A primitive Christmas repre- sentation is first mentioned at Valencia in 1432 and dialogue 3 was introduced by the year I44O. I2 SPANISH DRAMA BEFORE LOPE DE VEGA Europe in the first half of the fourteenth century by a pro- cession in which religious bodies and guilds escorted the Host through the streets, and Catalan and Valencian documents attest the popularity of that festival. Sacred scenes were sometimes represented, as for example, the Sacrificio de Isaac and Sueno y venta de Jacob, by the beneficiaries of the 1 Cathedral of Gerona on Corpus Christi day, I3OO, and re- ferences to the Corpus procession at Valencia date back to 1355.

The timely discovery of a new manuscript featuring Christmas chansonnier repertory expands on the information available on this subject during a relatively early period, as is that of the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. In spite of its fragmentary nature, the fact that it contains a hitherto unknown villancico (carol) by Juan de Valera, who was maestro di cappella at Seville Cathedral between 1505 and 1507, and another by Pedro de Escobar, his successor in the post, calls for a revision of some of the clichéd information about Christmas carols, as well as the role played by leading members of the Franciscan order in the origins of the genre.

    Algunas puntualizaciones sobre los orígenes del teatro popular en España: El caso de Lope de Rueda1 José Luis Canet Vallés Universidad de València Los orígenes del llamado "teatro popular" son los menos conocidos en todas las historias literarias europeas, debido sobre todo a la falta casi absoluta de textos y datos de su representación. El caso español no es una excepción, pero la mayoría de los críticos y los manuales literarios establecen una serie de principios ampliamente aceptados, que me gustaría matizar. En primer lugar y desde poco tiempo después de la muerte de Lope de Rueda, como ha señalado Alberto Blecua,2 se ha considerado a este representante como el padre del teatro popular, añadiendo a este apelativo una serie de características de dicho teatro: estilo rudimentario, pobreza de medios y representación, y por último que los pasos o entremeses por su sencillez de lenguaje y su comicidad son la base de dicho arte.3 En segundo lugar, la crítica de este siglo señala, basándose en el dato encontrado por Sánchez Arjona, que los autores-actores, y en especial Lope de Rueda, crean el profesionalismo teatral a imitación de los italianos. Y se da por supuesto que en la base de dicho teatro "popular" se encuentra la commedia dell'arte, uno de cuyos representantes fue Il Mutio, a quien habría visto representar Lope de Rueda o incluso trabajar con él en 1538. Respecto a las opiniones de Rufo, Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Rojas, etc., cabe señalar, como algunos críticos han perfectamente observado, una exageración de los escritores de fines del XVI y principios del XVII respecto al autor sevillano.

En el interior de este concepto se aglutinan los datos de público, organización social, circuitos de representación, composición de compañías, técnicas escé- nicas, escenarios, etc.. y en el interior de este concepto el texto es un componente más, fundamental si se quiere, sobre todo si consideramos que es una de nuestras fuentes privilegiadas de información, pero no el elemento determinante de nuestras hipótesis históricas. En última instancia nuestra mirada debe hacerse más teatral.2 Y esa mirada «más teatral» es la que lleva a Oleza a concebir la evolución del teatro del Quinientos como un entrecruzamiento dialéctico de tres prácticas escénicas diferenciadas, de cuya síntesis nacerá la comedia barroca. Esas tres prácticas escénicas propuestas por Oleza son: a) la populista, b) la cortesana, c) la clasicista. Kehlenbach, Janine Ann (Ph.D., Theatre and Dance) Contemporary Productions of Spanish Golden Age Drama in Great Britain and Spain Thesis directed by Professor Oliver Gerland Abstract Spanish Golden Age Drama is mostly studied in language departments where it is treated as literature to be read. Few scholars have studied Spanish Golden Age drama in contemporary performance. The purpose of this study is to examine and compare contemporary productions of works by Spanish Golden Age dramatists in Spain and England. In 1986 the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico (CNTC) was formed in Madrid with the express purpose of staging plays of the Spanish Golden Age. In the first half of the dissertation, I examine three recent productions directed by the CNTC’s current head, Eduardo Vasco: La estrella de Sevilla (The Star of Seville, Lope de Vega?), El pintor de su deshonra (The Painter of His Own Dishonor, Calderon de la Barca), and El Alcalde de Zalamea (The Mayor of Zalamea, Calderon).

Since its formation in 1995, the Chorus has offered diverse and innovative music to the community through a gathering of singers who believe in a commonality of spirit and sharing. The début concert featured music by Gabriel Fauré and Louis Vierne. The Chorus has been involved in several premieres, including Bay Area composer Brad Osness’ Lamentations, Ohio composer Robert Witt’s Four Motets to the Blessed Virgin Mary (West Coast premiere), New York composer William Hawley’s The Snow That Never Drifts (San Francisco premiere), San Francisco composer Kirke Mechem’s Christmas the Morn, Blessed Are They, To Music (San Francisco premieres), and selections from his operas, John Brown and The Newport Rivals, our 10th Anniversary Commission work, the World Premiere of Illinois composer Lee R. Kesselman’s This Grand Show Is Eternal, Robert Train Adams’ It Will Be Summer—Eventually (West Coast premiere) and the Fall 2009 World Premiere of Dr. Adams’ Christmas Fantasy. In Spring 2010, the Chorus explored a variety of wonderful settings of British poetry and folksongs, including compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gerald Finzi, Gustav Holst, George Shearing, Halsey Stevens, Robert Lucas Pearsall, Matthew Harris, Jonathan Quick, and our very own Music Director, Robert Train Adams, with his Music Expresses.

Chambers trans- lation of El Perro del Hortelano , by Lope de Vega, in Holton Hall at Kansas State College, Kay 7, 1958, in the manner it would have been presented to a seventeenth century Spanish audience. The problems encountered In producing this play, entitled The Dog in the M anger in the Chambers translation, include those of studying, editing and preparing the script, analyzing plot and character, planning rehearsal, designing and constructing set, planning the costuming, makeup, and lighting arrangement, together with the actual arrangement and presentation of the show. An attempt was made to view these problems as a Spanish director of the seventeenth century might have viewed them and then to undertake to approximate his technique as closely as possible in the present production.
