Candidate Position Statement

NASIG has been instrumental in my professional development from the moment I was hired at the University of North Alabama as a Scholarly Communications and Instructional Services Librarian in August 2017. This position was completely new to the university and, although I had ample experience as an Instructional Services Librarian, I needed to develop my Scholarly Communications skill set. One of the very first things I did was to chart priorities for myself and this new position using NASIG Core Competencies for Scholarly Communications Librarians, which had been approved and adopted by the NASIG board just 11 days after I started my new position. I relied on the core competencies so much so that I ended up presenting at NASIG’s annual meeting in Atlanta in 2018 about how crucial that document had been to my professional development. The importance of NASIG in my professional life has not waned. I still rely on the NASIG Core Competencies for Scholarly Communications Librarians to help inform my work with UNA’s institutional repository and, after getting to know some NASIG members at the annual meeting in Atlanta, I was excited to join the Education Committee, first as a member in 2018 and now as the Co-Chair and Webinar Coordinator. The NASIG community is focused and supportive, and being a member has allowed me to better myself professionally by providing a space for discussion amongst librarians who work directly with information resource management, including those directly involved in scholarly communications, institutional repositories, open access, open education, electronic resources, and serials management. The opportunity to be more involved in NASIG as a member of the executive committee would be an honor. If elected, I would continue to promote NASIG’s tradition of librarian support, continuing education, and development of core competencies and best practices.
