ABSTRACT This study entitled ‗Effects of scaffolding technique on Academic Performance of Students in Peace Education in Colleges of Education in Nasaraw State, Nigeria is aimed at inculcating in learners the right type of attitude, knowledge, and skills to help them resolve conflicts using non- violent approach. The study has three objectives, three research questions, and three corresponding hypotheses. The study used the eclectic approach to situate educational theories underpinning Social Studies Education, Harris‘s (2004) peace education theory, and Vygosky‘s (1978) Zone of Proximate Development (ZPD) explaining scaffolding technique. The population of the study was 1178 involving N.C.E. II Social Studies of C.O.E. Akwanga, and HIILs C.O.E. Gwanje. The sample size of the study is made up of 90 research participant. The research design for the study is the quasi-experimental research design, the reliability index for instrument is .947 and .80 respectively. Hypothesis one and three, were tested with the use of t-test independent statistic, while hypotheses two was tested using ANOVA. Hypotheses one, was rejected while hypotheses two and three were accepted. The findings of the study revealed that: Scaffolding Technique is effective and more superior to the conventional teaching approach in the teaching of peace education. Scaffolding enhances students‘ academic performance through cooperative, autonomous, and independent learning. Scaffolding technique is not gender bias. The study made the following recommendations: Colleges of Education, and teachers should adopt scaffolding technique in teaching because scaffolding technique creates an enabling environment where learners can interact in series of learning activities which can lead to better understanding of concepts. Teachers should teach learners‘ peace education using scaffolding technique, because scaffolding technique allows learners to work in groups, become autonomous, as well as independent learners, this will help in improving their academic performance. Teachers should not discriminate learners based on gender, because scaffolding technique is not gender bias. The study made contributions to knowledge.     3 The Future of the Nation-State Project in Africa: The Case of Nigeria Nduba Echezona As the Cold War cycle played itself out, some of the multinational nation-states which had been taken for granted such as the former Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia suddenly dissolved. Their splitting pointed towards a direction which had hitherto been a trend in world politics, namely that the nation’s territory had to be synonymous with the territory of the state, the nation being made up of people with shared cultures and myths of blood ties. This direction in Europe might have set a worldwide pace. Africa has shown very little sign of complying with it. Africa entered the post-Cold War era with seemingly high prospects of terri- torial disintegration. This was exemplified by many civil wars in recent years, some with genocidal features. But, except for Eritrea and, to a lesser extent Somaliland, the political map of Africa’s states and borders has remained remarkably unchanged. Wars in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo have not caused these states to split. It examines the meaning, actors, procedures and practices of power-sharing in Nigeria. The paper assesses the opportunities and challenges arising from the use of power-sharing as a method of governing the public sphere and highlights the lessons that Nigeria’s experience presents to other African countries struggling with the challenge of ethnic diversity. The paper argues that power-sharing as it is being practiced in Nigeria widens the asymmetrical and oligarchic power of the dominant elite groups, creates a dependency syndrome, and hampers the growth of democracy. It contends that the Nigerian case exposes the contradictions and limitations of power-sharing as an institutional approach to the regulation of the public sphere. Introduction Nigeria’s heritage of ethnic diversity has had an overwhelming impact on the country’s public sphere, leading to its “ethnicization”. On the other hand, the stiff political competition among the elite has resulted in the “politicization” of ethnicity in the country. The result of the above is a highly contested public sphere, which has been made the arena of rhetorical confrontations between various ethnic groups in the country. However since the 1970s, the Nigerian political elite have adopted power-sharing as a strategy to manage inter-group relations, mitigate the negative effects of ethnic politics, and transform the “ethnicized” public sphere through the introduction of the discourse of “unity in diversity”.

Boer 2009 The reason for this and a number of other appendices is that Appendix 35 to which they are attached was to be a chapter in the actual book, not an appendix on this CCD. When the book threatened to become too large, I had to revise the plan and turn three chapters into major appendices. These are Appendix 1, 6 and 35. So, now we have three major appendices, each of which has generated its own appendices! When you look at the List of Appendices in the book itself, you will see how it has all been organized. Most of the appendices constitute materials written by others; some are written by myself. You can find the list of the latter under my name in the Bibliography. A few may be tucked away in other folders and can be found by searching for “Boer” by using your computer’s “search” function. These appendices were all created on the assumption that Appendix 1, 6 and 35 would constitute chapters in the book itself. Since rewriting them to fit this re- organization would have been very time consuming, I largely left them in tact and made only a few minor changes. The bad news is that the result may be a bit complicated, but the good news is that all the materials, facts, ideas, etc. are there for you to read, use and enjoy. This appendix contains both BZ and AZ materials.     Africa Development, Vol. XXXIX, No. 2, 2014, pp. 153 – 212 © Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, 2014 (ISSN 0850-3907) ‘Ties that Bind and Differences that Divide’: Exploring the Resurgence of Ethno-Cultural Identity in Nigeria Nsemba Edward Lenshie* Abstract This article investigates the resurgence of ethno-cultural identity in contemporary Nigeria. The article shows that contestations associated with ethno-cultural identity are not recent, but date back to the creation of the modern state called Nigeria. The article also demonstrates how colonialism fostered various social, economic and political problems in Nigeria and highlights the manner in which the post-colonial political class has fed on the far-reaching effects of colonialism to complicate intergroup relations in the country. The study reveals that Nigeria’s return to civil rule on 29 May 1999, opened the space for the political class to exploit the resurgence of ethnicity and religion in a way capable of jeopardising the corporate existence of the country, especially in the current phase of democratisation. In conclusion, it proffers possible recommendations towards ameliorating the enormous challenges arising from the mismanagement of ethno-cultural identity in Nigeria. Politics and Influence in Northern Nigeria Summary points • Northern Nigeria is witnessing an upheaval in its political and social space. In 1999, important shifts in presidential politics led to the rebalancing of power relations between the north of Nigeria and the more economically productive south. This move triggered the unprecedented recalibration of influence held by northern leaders over the federal government. Goodluck Jonathan’s elevation to the presidency in 2010 upended the deal made by the political brokers of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to rotate power between the north and south, from which the party had derived much of its unity. • The decisive role played by the power shift issue in 15 years of democracy raises important questions about the long-term effectiveness of the elite pacts and regional rotation arrangements that have been used to manage the balance of power between the north and the south. It also highlights the fragility and uncertainties of Nigeria’s democratic transition, as well as the unresolved fault lines in national unity as the country commemorates the centenary of the unification of the north and south in 2014. • The significance and complexity of challenges in northern Nigeria make determining priorities for the region extremely difficult. Yet overcoming the north’s considerable problems relating to development and security are crucial to the realization of a shared and prosperous future for all of Nigeria. Strong economic growth in the past decade has provided the government with the opportunities and resources to pursue thoughtful strategies that can address the development deficit between the north and the more prosperous south as well as creating greater political inclusion.

The Nigerian Press and the Dilemma of Peace Building in a Democracy By Jacob Shaibu Tsado Dissertation submitted for DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Birmingham School of Media, Birmingham City University United Kingdom June 2016 i ABSTRACT This study explores the mediation of ethno-religious conflicts by the press and investigates their potential for escalating or minimising such conflicts. Undertaken in the context of the protracted sectarian conflicts plaguing the Nigerian nation since return to democratic governance in 1999, the study focuses particular attention on the Nigerian press and seeks to locate the press within these conflicts. It addresses the wider debates around the reporting of war and conflict, particularly the contentious issues of the relationship between media and conflict and explores the implications of this relationship on the course of violent intra-state sectarian conflicts. Research on news culture confirms that media representations generally tend to glamorise war, violence and propaganda with negative implications for the resolution of such situations. This has raised critical issues about mainstream journalistic practices in the coverage of violence and scholarly arguments as to whether journalism is a participant or a detached observer in the conflict cycle. This study engages these difficult and much contested issues within the context of emerging alternative strategies for conflict reportage, focusing particular attention on the concept of peace journalism and its applicability to routine journalistic practice. The research utilises a repertoire of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection, including content analysis, framing and critical discourse analyses and semi-structured interviews. The data collected is interrogated using a theoretical framework that incorporates ideas from ethnicity, media and ethnic conflicts, critical political economy as well as debates about alternative approaches to conflict coverage and reportage.

Abstract: The farmer-pastoralist conflict (FPC) in Nigeria has aggravated in recent years. It generated intense debate between 2015 and 2018 because of the aggravation of the conflict and the increased fatalities associated with it. This paper analyses the media representation of the conflict. Data were newspapers’ editorials and regular columnists’ stories and supplemented by government and independent bodies’ reports. Newspapers, as agents of popular culture, play a critical role in the propagation of various discourses of the conflict which seek interpellation and are also contested. This paper shows that the discourse is dichotomous and conflictive between ecological reasoning and ethnic-regional and religious imaginations. Keywords: conflict, environmental security, farmers, media discourse, pastoralist, subjective beliefs 1 Introduction The conflict between nomadic Fulani pastoralists and farming folks in rural Africa, especially the West Africa sub- region has been a recurring decimal in the last two decades. The conflict has intensified in recent years and has led to the destruction of property, deaths, and displacement of people in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, among others. Hence, it has attracted renewed scholarly inquiry. This paper is about the discourse of the farmer-pastoralists conflict in Nigeria. It shows the discursive battle to produce the meaning of the conflict in environmental security light on the one hand and ethno-regional and religious imaginations, on the other hand, as reflected in the media discourse of the strife.

Department of History and International Studies, Al-Hkimah University Ilorin. Email: [email protected] Abstract Nigeria was under British colonial domination from 1900 to 1960. This era was preceded by imperial conquest of the reign. There were established kingdoms, empires, and homogenous ethnic peoples within the Nigerian regionbefore British occupation.These diverse ethnic groupsequally had absolute control over their natural resources without interference from external powers. It is argued that the colonial government as a result of administrative exigencies lumpedthese diverse ethnic groups together to form Nigeria in 1914. This development has sowed the seed of discord, ethnic power strife and bias in the Middle-Belt during the post-colonial period. The paper examines how the dominance of Hausa/Fulani oligarchs over other ethnic groups has led to the marginalization of the Middle Belt region.With the use of relevant primary and secondary sources, the paper argues that the inability of the British colonial government to find a lasting solution to the challenges of marginalization and otherproblems of minority rights has exacerbated agitations in the Middle-Belt. The paper further contends that since the federal structure in the post-colonial periodfavoured some segments of the Middle-Belt, particularly the unequal resources allocation and politics of marginalisation in the region, their social and economic development has been hampered.
